OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of visual field, vertical cup-disc (VC/D) ratio, and vertical height of optic chiasm.
DESIGN: Case series.
SETTING: Outpatient eye clinic.
PATIENTS: Eighteen patients with low, normal, or elevated intraocular pressure, with or without visual field defects.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Optic pathway abscess formation is a rare clinical entity. To date, there are no reports of optic pathway abscess formation due to Clostridium septicum, secondary to colon adenocarcinoma. We present a video case report of a unique patient found to have C. septicum optic pathway abscess requiring craniotomy for incision and drainage of optic nerve/chiasm.

We describe gross and histopathological features of multiple ocular and neuro-ophthalmic abnormalities in a fox squirrel (Sciurus niger). Ophthalmic findings included severe bilateral microphthalmos, with the right eye more affected than the left. Histopathology confirmed severe microphthalmia, aphakia, disorganized retinal tissue and small optic nerves, as well as agenesis of the optic chiasm and optic tract. This combination of neuro-ophthalmic abnormalities has not been previously described in wild animals.

Objectives We investigated the optic nerve (ON) and chiasm (OC) in magnetic resonance (MR) in diabetic patients by comparing them with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Methods In this retrospective study, cranial MRIs of 42 adults (19 males and 23 females) with diabetes mellitus (DM) (group1) and 40 healthy controls (19 males and 21 females) (group 2) were included. The visual pathway in albino animals is abnormal in that there is a smaller number of ipsilaterally projecting retinal ganglion cells. There are two possible sites of gene action that could result in such a defect. A recent anatomical study of the human optic chiasm cast doubt on the widespread assumption that nerve fibres travelling in the human optic nerve and chiasm are arranged retinotopically. Accordingly, a scoping literature review was performed to determine what is known about the nerve fibre arrangement in these structures. We report a unique anomaly in the ocular dominance column pattern of a single, normally pigmented macaque monkey. The column pattern contained large monocular areas inserted between the normal columns and the dorsal V1 border.
