An Underwater Methane Sensor Based on Laser Spectroscopy in a Hollow Core Optical Fiber.

Existing sensors for measuring dissolved methane in situ suffer from excessively slow response times or large size and complexity. The technology reported here realizes improvements by utilizing a hollow core optical fiber (HFC) as the detection cell in an underwater infrared laser spectrometer. The sensor operates by using a polymer membrane inlet to continuously extract dissolved gas from water. Once inside the sensor, the gas passes through an HCF, within which tunable diode laser spectroscopy is used to quantify methane. The use of an HCF for the optical cell enables advantages of sensitiv

Coupling of photocatalysis and catalysis using an optical fiber textile for room temperature depollution.

Herein, we investigate the interplay between a photocatalyst (TiO2) and a catalyst (Pt/TiO2 and Pt/CeO2) for the oxidation of formaldehyde and toluene at room temperature. A luminous textile is used as support and as light source for the photocatalyst. Our results indicate that the presence of the catalyst and the photocatalyst increases the catalytic performance for the oxidation of formaldehyde, while the photocatalytic performance for toluene oxidation decreases. The overall performance (toluene and formaldehyde degradation) of the system can be optimized with respect to the choice of suppo

Portable fiber-optic SPR platform for the detection of NS1-antigen for dengue diagnosis.

Here, we present a portable, selective and cost-effective fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based platform for early detection of Dengue virus. NS1 protein was targeted as the biomarker of dengue. Antibody-antigen specific binding was exploited for NS1 antigen detection. The binding of antibody was assisted by a self-assembled monolayer of alkanethiols on the surface of silver-coated unclad fiber. A wavelength interrogation mode of SPR was utilized to detect NS1 antigen in the dynamic range of 0.2-2.0 μg/ml. The 40 nm thick silver coated optical fiber exhibited resonance wavelength a

Clinical application of near infrared fiber optic spectroscopy for noninvasive bone assessment.

Approaches for noninvasive bone quality assessment are of great clinical need, particularly in individuals that require close monitoring of disease progression. X-ray measurements are standard approaches to assess bone quality; however, they have several disadvantages. Here, a nonionizing approach for noninvasive assessment of the second metacarpal bone based on near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was investigated. Transcutaneous bone signal detection was experimentally confirmed with cadaveric hand data, and Monte Carlo modeling further indicated that 50% of the measured signals arise from bone.

Real-time optical fiber sensors based on light diffusing microlens arrays.

The applications of optical fibers are impeded in implantable medical diagnostics due to incompatibility with biological tissues, and immune reaction in vivo. The utilization of biocompatible materials to construct a photonic sensing platform can reduce the immune response in in vivo medical diagnostics. Here, we developed real-time optical fiber sensors to determine the volumetric modulation of stimuli-responsive polymers. Asymmetric microlens structures were replicated on stimuli-sensitive hydrogels as stand-alone sensors and were chemically attached to the tips of silica and biocompatible o…

Mobile fiber-optic sensor for detection of oral and cervical cancer in the developing world.

Oral and cervical cancers are a growing global health problem that disproportionately impacts women and men living in the developing world. The high death rate in developing countries is largely due to the fact that these countries do not have the appropriate medical infrastructure and resources to support the organized screening and diagnostic programs that are available in the developed world. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) with a fiber-optic probe can noninvasively quantify the optical properties of epithelial tissues and has shown the potential as a cost-effective, easy-to-use, and

Fabrication of the optical fiber pH sensor based on CdSe/ZnS quantum dot.

During the past decade, there has been a lot of research on the application of quantum dots (QDs) in photonics and biotechnology. QDs are semiconductor nanocrystals which show many peculiar optical and electrical properties due to their quantum confinement effects. In this work, the correlation of the fluorescence intensity of QDs and the pH under ambient temperature was studied. An optical fiber pH sensor was prepared using CdSe/ZnS carboxyl quantum dots as sensing media. QDs with different sizes and emission colors (green, yellow, and red) were immobilized on the surface of the optical fiber

Use of fiber optic technology to measure the effects of anesthesia on luciferase reaction kinetics.

In vivo bioluminescent imaging (BLI) is a sensitive and reliable technique for studying gene expression, although experiments must be controlled tightly to obtain reproducible and quantitative measurements. The luciferase reaction depends on the availability of the reaction substrate, oxygen, and ATP, the distribution of which can vary markedly in different tissues. Here we used in vivo fiber optic technology, combined with stereotaxis-assisted surgery, to assess luciferase reaction kinetics in response to 2 anesthetic regimens, isoflurane and ketamine-xylazine. Transgenic rats that expressed

Force monitoring in a maxilla model and dentition using optical fiber Bragg gratings.

The aim of this work is to show the possibility of using fiber optic sensors to instrument inside parts of an artificial maxilla and measure internal tension transmitted by the orthodontic and orthopedic appliances to the dentition and the adjacent bone. Bragg gratings written in a standard optical fiber were used to monitor the maxillary teeth and a multiplexed fiber was used to monitor the surface of the maxillary bone, transversally to the longest axis of the teeth. A Universal Test Machine was used to evaluate the sensitivity of the sensor to the vertical and lateral forces applied on the

Carbonization of a radicular cyst using fiber-optic diode laser: a case report.

A female patient, 51 years old, complaint of painful swelling on the anatomical area of the upper left lateral incisor. The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed histo-pathologically. Nowadays, radicular cysts may be treated using conventional root canal methods or surgical apicectomy. The possible soft-laser reaction to radicular cysts after contact application has not been investigated. We present an in vitro case of a diagnosed radicular cyst which carbonized after contact application of diode laser. The need for future clinical trials will be essential to prove the sensitivity of this

Progressive peritumoral edema defining the optic fibers and resulting in reversible visual loss.

Hemangioblastomas are frequently associated with peritumoral edema caused by extravasation of plasma ultrafiltrate through permeable neoplastic vessels. The authors report the clinical and imaging findings in a 62-year-old man with von Hippel-Lindau disease who presented with rapid (within 24 hours) loss of color vision and nearcomplete loss of left eye vision (acuity too poor to test). Serial MR imaging demonstrated a stable vascular tumor in the medioinferior aspect of the left optic nerve, associated with progressive edema extending from the nerve through to the bilateral optic radiations.

Fiber-optic microsphere-based arrays for multiplexed biological warfare agent detection.

We report a multiplexed high-density DNA array capable of rapid, sensitive, and reliable identification of potential biological warfare agents. An optical fiber bundle containing 6000 individual 3.1-mum-diameter fibers was chemically etched to yield microwells and used as the substrate for the array. Eighteen different 50-mer single-stranded DNA probes were covalently attached to 3.1-mum microspheres. Probe sequences were designed for Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Brucella melitensis, Clostridium botulinum, Vaccinia virus, and one biological warfare agent (BWA) s

Retinal nerve fiber layer axonal loss and visual dysfunction in optic neuritis.

Axonal loss is thought to be a likely cause of persistent disability after a multiple sclerosis relapse; therefore, noninvasive in vivo markers specific for axonal loss are needed. We used optic neuritis as a model of multiple sclerosis relapse to quantify axonal loss of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and secondary retinal ganglion cell loss in the macula with optical coherence tomography. We studied 25 patients who had a previous single episode of optic neuritis with a recruitment bias to those with incomplete recovery and 15 control subjects. Optical coherence tomography measurement of

Zeolite-fiber integrated optical chemical sensors for detection of dissolved organics in water.

MFI zeolite coated optical fiber sensors have been developed for in situ detection of dissolved organics in water. The sensors operate by monitoring the optical reflectivity changes caused by the selective adsorption of organic molecules, i.e., 2-propanol or pentanoic acid in this study, from aqueous solutions in the zeolitic pores. Reversible and monotonic sensor signals were observed in response to the variation of 2-propanol concentration in water with fast response. However, the sensor exhibited a much slower response to pentanoic acid than to 2-propanol. It was also found that substitutio

On-line chemiluminescence assay using FIA and fiber optics for urinary and blood glucose.

A chemiluminescence fiber optic system coupled to flow injection analysis (FIA) and ion exchange chromatography has been developed for determining glucose in blood and urine. Immobilized glucose oxidase acted on beta-D-glucose to produce hydrogen peroxide, which was then reacted with luminol in the presence of ferricyanide to produce a light signal. Endogenous ascorbic acid and uric acid present in urine or blood samples were effectively retained by an upstream acetate anion exchanger. In addition, acetaminophen could also be adsorbed by this ion exchanger. The detection system exhibited a sen
