PURPOSE: Ewing's tumor is a primary tumor of bone in childhood that only rarely involves the orbit. Most such cases are metastatic from distant sites. This tumor may be confused with other small round cell malignancies of childhood, and immunohistochemical studies are essential in making the diagnosis.
METHODS: We present two cases of Ewing's tumor of the orbit. One was in a 22-year-old boy with an occult primary tumor in the frontal bone that became symptomatic after forehead trauma. The other example was in a 7-year-old boy with a known Ewing's primary of the clavicle. The clinical manifest…

Light carries both longitudinal and transverse spin angular momentum. The spin can couple with its orbital counterpart, known as the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light. Complementary to the longitudinal SOI known previously, here we show that transverse SOI of light is inherent in the Helmholtz equation when transverse spinning light propagates in curved paths. It lifts the degeneracy of dispersion relations of light for opposite transverse spin states, analogous to the Dresselhaus effect. Transverse SOI is ubiquitous in nanophotonic systems where transverse spin and optical path bending ar…

With one electron in the degenerateyz, xzorbital sector, theSr2CrO4compound exhibits active orbital degree of freedom, resulting in strongly enhanced orbital and spin-orbital correlations due to Coulomb interaction induced renormalization of the otherwise weak bare spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in this 3dtransition metal compound. Finite temperature orbital fluctuations strongly reduce spin-orbital correlations, effective SOC strength, and magnon excitation energy. Orbital and magnetic transition temperatures estimated from the calculated orbiton and (renormalized) magnon energies are in good agree…

A 52-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of progressive right proptosis associated with intermittent right retrobulbar and facial pain. MRI revealed a heterogeneously enhancing, well-circumscribed, ovoid, soft tissue mass in the intraconal space near the right orbital apex displacing the optic nerve medially. Excisional biopsy established the diagnosis of a schwannoma-perineurioma hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumor (HPNST). This case represents only the second reported occurrence, to our knowledge, of an orbital schwannoma-perineurioma HPNST.

Hybrid neurofibroma/schwannoma is a rare variant of hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumours (HPNST). A Medline search up to December 2021 identified only six cases of this tumour in the orbit. We report the case of a 78-year-old man who presented with left exophthalmos. Computed tomography showed a left intraconal orbital mass. The clinico-radiological diagnosis was consistent with an intraconal cavernous angioma. Orbitotomy was performed, obtaining an 18×16×11mm mass. Two different morphologies were seen microscopically, diagnostic of hybrid neurofibroma/schwannoma. HPNSTs of the orbit are unc…

Objective: Lymphoproliferative disorders are a group of lesions characterized by abnormal proliferation of lymphocytes. In the orbit, they can occur in the ocular adnexae. These neoplasms have defined clinical and pathologic characteristics and account for more than 20% of all orbital tumors. Several types of lymphoproliferative lesions have been described in the orbit. One example is lymphoid hyperplasia, which commonly involves the lacrimal gland. A benign lesion like lymphoid hyperplasia will show a general normal archetype of the tissues-involved lacrimal gland. We expect a polyclonal grou…

BACKGROUND: Accurate quantitative data of the adult bony orbital volume and dimension are needed for treatment optimization. In the present study, the authors aim to evaluate adult orbital volume and corresponding linear dimensions according to age, volume, and individual symmetry.
METHODS: Seventy computerized tomography facial scans of adults were randomly chosen from an institutional database and 3-dimensionally reconstructed. Studies were excluded for orbital pathology or incomplete radiographic data. Anatomic landmarks were marked. Interval linear distances and orbital volumes were calcu…

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are tumours that usually arise in the gastrointestinal tract and the bronchopulmonary system. The orbit is a rare anatomical site for their metastases. In the following article we present a case report of a 73-year-old man who was admitted to the Ophthalmology Department because of eye pain and high intraocular pressure in the right eye. There was also eye motility restriction, diplopia, oedema of the eyelid, and subconjunctival haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumour in the right orbit, probably arising from the inferior rectus muscle. The patient wa…

For removal of tumors and foreign bodies from the orbit, for treatment of severe inflammatory diseases, and for repositioning of bone fragments following fractures or during reconstruction of the bony orbit, several different surgical approaches are available. During the past decade, improved understanding of the pathology and pathophysiology of particular orbital diseases, advancements in clinical endoscopy and microscopy, the introduction of modern imaging techniques for preoperative visualization of pathologic findings, modern approaches to orbital reconstruction, as well as developments in…

Dermoid cysts are histologically defined as surface epithelium encapsulating an inner lumen. They are well described in the literature as di … upture and reformation of the dermoid cyst. When possible, our experience favours early excision of orbital dermoid cysts to minimize morbidity.

To describe post-traumatic and congenital respiratory epithelial cysts in the orbit, which are rare lesions with only 5 and 13 published cases, respectively. We reviewed all cases of respiratory epithelial cysts diagnosed at three institutions (two tertiary referral hospitals, one private clinic) between 1995 and 2015. We describe 10 cases of post-traumatic respiratory epithelial cyst (age range 23 - 82), presenting a mean of 17.4 years after their original trauma; and 3 congenital cases (age range 17-34). All but one case underwent surgical excision of the cyst and its lining, along with any …

In the span of the last 48 years, only 33 cases of children with orbital Ewing sarcoma have been reported. This study is to present 3 cases that were admitted to Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357, during the period from 2009 to 2013. We have 2 cases treated using the hospital standard Ewing sarcoma treatment protocol, to completion, whereas the third discontinued treatment. All tumors have confirmed CD99 positivity, although translocation (11;22) was positive in 1 patient and negative in the third. With earlier diagnosis and adequate surgical resection and integration of chemotherapy and …

Determining safe surgical access to the orbit can be difficult given the complex anatomy and delicacy of the orbital structures. When considering biopsy or removal of an orbital tumor or repair of orbital fractures, careful planning is required to determine the ideal approach. Traditionally, this has at times necessitated invasive procedures with large incisions and extensive bone removal. The purpose of this review was to present newly techniques and devices in orbital surgery that have been reported over the past decade, with aims to provide better exposure and/or minimally invasive approach…

We report 2 patients with blow-in fractures of the orbital floor caused by different mechanisms. In a 17-year-old boy, a sudden impact was given to the anterior maxillary wall and caused a depression fracture of a maxilla, yet the infraorbital rim remained intact. We think fragments of the orbital floor were forced into the orbit by a sudden increase in pressure in the maxillary sinus in this patient. In a 51-year-old man, the impact of a force was on the laterosuperior part of the zygoma, which pushed the zygoma medially. These 2 cases represent 2 different mechanisms of blow-in fractures of …

Every surgeon operating on the face, and particularly around the eye, should possess a working knowledge of the critical details related to development of the human orbit and recognized changes that occur during the course of aging. The anatomy of the orbit and periorbital region is complex, and the diagnosis and treatment of patients with orbital/periorbital disease requires expertise in congenital differences and awareness of the changes that occur as individuals age.

PURPOSE: To report three cases of sclerosing Wegener's granulomatosis in the orbit and to compare the histopathological morphology with those of other types of sclerosing orbital inflammation.
METHODS: We analysed the clinical data along with histopathological specimens from orbital biopsies and from two enucleated eyes.
RESULTS: All three patients had longstanding inflammation in the orbit and involvement of the paranasal sinuses. Proptosis, impaired ocular motility and reduced visual acuity dominated the clinical picture. All histopathological specimens featured granulomatous inflammation,…

A 30-year-old woman complained of right-sided epiphora for 2 years. She also reported diplopia on certain gaze positions and felt a hard mass behind the right medial inferior orbital rim. Magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrated a relatively well-delineated mass in the right inferomedial orbit with minimal ethmoid sinus involvement. Histopathological evaluation following a large incisional biopsy showed massive eosinophilic infiltration and fibrosis with the final diagnosis of eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis. She was then discovered to have significant peripheral eosinophilia and ele…

In 1991, a carcinoid tumor of the duodenum with metastasis in the regional lymph nodes was resected in a 39-year-old-man. A metastasis in the mediastinum was found and was resected in 1996. In 1999, a metastasis in the left lung was discovered and was excised. In 2001, he noticed right-sided diplopia, and a computed tomography (CT) scan disclosed a tumor of 2 cm diameter in the right orbit with infiltration to the frontal sinus. The tumor was resected, and was diagnosed metastatic carcinoid tumor. An orbital metastasis of carcinoid tumor is rare, and only about 30 cases have been reported in t…
