Dentofacial changes after orthodontic intervention with eruption guidance appliance in the early mixed dentition.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate skeletal and dentoalveolar changes induced by the eruption guidance appliance in the early mixed dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre- and posttreatment cephalometric radiographs of 115 consecutively treated children, 62 boys and 53 girls, were compared with those obtained from a control group of 104 children, 52 boys and 52 girls. Pretreatment radiographs were taken at the deciduous-mixed dentition interphase (T1) and after full eruption of all permanent incisors and first molars (T2). The mean age of the children in both groups was 5.1 years at T1 and 8.4 years at T2

Growth and development in the pediatric patient.

What is the most important aspect of children's dentistry? Some may argue that it is the restoration orprevention of decay and disease. Others may describe nutrition. The diagnosis and treatment of proper growth and development, I feel is the most important responsibility of our practices. What we do or don't do can affect the child for life. Unfortunately, many of us lack the abilities we need to affectively monitor or augment, if necessary, proper growth and development. The purpose of this paper is to provide us with some basic knowledge, tools and treatments.

Prevalence of malocclusion and need for early orthodontic treatment in children.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of functional appliances and orthopedic appliances the elimination and correction of skeletal and dental discrepancies has been much reduced. Most orthodontists agree that elimination of oral habits and orthopaedic treatment of class 3 malocclusion and posterior cross bites deserve treatment at an early age. Early treatment was proposed along the lines of "catch them in the young", and "you see it, you treat it" is the main ideology of Early Orthodonticc Treatment (EOT). Furthermore, the majority of children have habits driving the malocclusion. Mouth breathing, ton

[Orthodontic treatment of children with cleft lip and cleft palate].

Orthodontic treatment of children with cleft palates continues through the periods of the three dentitions: temporary, mixed, and adult. Using examples, this paper deals with the different difficulties that can be encountered during treatment of this malformation. Orthodontic interception at the time of the temporary dentition corrects the heart of the problem, the transverse insufficiency, but also addresses moderate maxillary retrusion. Cooperation with a speech therapist at this stage is essential. In the mixed dentition, orthodontists correct incisal malalignment and, depending upon the se

Mandibular lateral incisor-canine transposition in monozygotic twins.

Mandibular tooth transposition, involving the right lateral incisor and canine, is described in monozygotic twin girls. This report provides evidence suggesting that genetic factors influence the development of mandibular lateral incisor-canine (Mn.I2.C) transposition. Interceptive orthodontic treatment for children with this rare occlusal abnormality should be considered.

The new dental-medical renaissance. Medically efficacious functional jaw orthopedics.

Functional Jaw Orthopedics (FJO) is medically efficacious, exceptionally unique and unequaled in speed of a cure for a number of very common medical conditions currently only "managed" by modern medicine. This publication combines scientific citations and case presentations to show how and why dentists who advocate and provide early FJO treatment will lead a New Dental-Medical Renaissance into some of the most profound areas of medicine. Nocturnal enuresis (chronic bed-wetting) otitis media (ear infections), cor pulmonare, cognitive thought, vision, hearing, cardio-pulmonary dysfunction, and m

Treatment of class II division 1 malocclusion with myofunctional trainer system in early mixed dentition period.

Dentofacial growth interferences, caused by abnormal lip and tongue function in the mixed dentition period are a common clinical condition. The main purpose of the treatment in such cases is to eliminate oral dysfunction, establish muscular balance and correct or diminish maxillary incisor protrusion. The position of the teeth is determined by the lip and tongue pressure. Lip function may have been the cause of forcing teeth in to malposition they occupy. The case report is presented where the myofunctional trainer T4K is used during growth phase.

Do the various interceptive treatment modalities improve the position of palatally displaced permanent canines? A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Removal of maxillary primary canines and other interceptive treatment modalities in the mixed dentition have been suggested as methods used to increase the rate of normal eruption of palatally displaced permanent canines (PDCs). However, the information on the overall effect on PDCs' position has been inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether this practice improves the position of PDCs and to investigate the quality of the evidence. SEARCH METHODS: Unrestricted searches in 7 databases and manual searching of the reference lists in relevant studies were performed up to June 2022

Effectiveness of extraction of primary canines for interceptive management of palatally displaced permanent canines: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although extraction of primary canines in the mixed dentition has been suggested as a measure to prevent impaction of palatally displaced permanent canines (PDCs), the relevant evidence has been inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of this practice and investigate the quality of the evidence. SEARCH METHODS: Search without restrictions in 15 databases and hand searching until April 2017. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized clinical trials comparing extraction of primary canines in the mixed dentition to no treatment. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Following study retr

Permanent maxillary canines - review of eruption pattern and local etiological factors leading to impaction.

The position of the permanent maxillary canine at the angle of the mouth is strategically significant in maintaining the harmony and symmetry of the occlusal relationship. However, the maxillary canine is the second most frequently impacted tooth, with prevalence reported to be between 1% and 2%. Moreover, treatment of this condition is often complex and involves substantial time and financial cost. Hence, it is only prudent to monitor the eruption and identify the etiological factors that lead to impaction of the maxillary canine. Numerous researchers have tried to identify specific and nonsp

Diagnosis and treatment planning for unerupted premolars.

Premolars rank third in frequency after third molars and maxillary canines in impacted or unerupted teeth. Failure to detect and analyze the problem may lead to unnecessary space loss, crowding, or collapse of the dental arch. A diagnostic scheme is presented to facilitate diagnosing and treating unerupted premolars. Important observations include: Diagnosing congenitally missing permanent teeth. Whether the condition is generalized or localized. Whether the succedaneous tooth has a viable form, eruptive potential, and viable orientation Whether the delayed eruption is due to over-retained pri

[From the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition: how to manage space while guiding eruption?].

In the mixed dentition, when there is a discrepancy between the bony structures and the teeth, in certain cases, serial extractions are performed in order to guide the eruption of permanent teeth and obtain a correct occlusal function. The treatment consists in the extraction of primary teeth and then of first bicuspids. The choice of the first tooth to be extracted is based upon the position of the crowns of the permanent teeth and their degree of root maturation. Then the first bicuspid is extracted as soon as or prior to its eruption. This interceptive treatment has limited indications whic

[Hypodontia: considerations on orthodontic therapy in agenesis of the permanent upper lateral incisor].

The authors have investigated different clinical cases having in common the agenesis of the permanent upper lateral incisors, to evaluate from a clinical and esthetic point of view the possibilities, results and the limits of the orthodontic treatment. These are nowadays increasingly associated with esthetic dentistry, prosthodontics, implantology and finally with dental transplantation. The patients presented the absence of one or both permanent upper lateral incisors or the agenesis of other teeth, sometimes associated with dental crowding or a not favourable intermaxillary relation.
