The Impact of Continuous Passive Motion on Heterotopic Ossification Maturation.

Heterotopic ossification is the formation of pathological bone in soft tissues. It is postulated that continuous passive motion is a helpful adjuvant in the halt of the heterotopic ossification progression and the maintenance or increase of the joint mobility. The purpose of this clinical case study is to present the effectiveness of continuous passive motion. A 46-yr-old male patient experiencing right hemiparesis arrived in our rehabilitation department with limitation on passive flexion of the right hip. On x-ray of the pelvis, immature heterotopic bone formation was found. To halt this ong

Heterotopic Ossification of the Peroneus Brevis Tendon in a Pediatric Patient.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal formation of mature lamellar bone in soft tissues. HO is most commonly diagnosed in the setting of localized trauma, which results in improper differentiation of progenitor cells, leading to aberrant tissue formation. In the pediatric population, nongenetic causes of HO have rarely been reported, especially HO involving the tendons of the ankle. We present a case of HO of the peroneus brevis tendon without systemic disease in a pediatric patient. The patient was a 7-year-old female with a normal birth and developmental history who first presented 6 wee

Intracerebral haemorrhage and hemiplegia with heterotopic ossification of the affected hip.

We present the case of a 72-year-old woman who developed right hemiparesis following a left frontal intraparenchymal haemorrhage. Three months following initial presentation, the patient noted poorly localised right lower quadrant pain. Following extensive investigations, a diagnosis of heterotopic ossification of the hip was made. We discuss the aetiology and pathogenesis of this uncommon entity, and discuss its relationship to ipsilateral neurological injury. The link with neurological injury can result in a delayed and atypical presentation. Early recognition and treatment are important for

Heterotopic ossifications in a mouse model of albright hereditary osteodystrophy.

Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) is characterized by short stature, brachydactyly, and often heterotopic ossifications that are typically subcutaneous. Subcutaneous ossifications (SCO) cause considerable morbidity in AHO with no effective treatment. AHO is caused by heterozygous inactivating mutations in those GNAS exons encoding the α-subunit of the stimulatory G protein (Gα(s)). When inherited maternally, these mutations are associated with obesity, cognitive impairment, and resistance to certain hormones that mediate their actions through G protein-coupled receptors, a condition ter

[Heterotopic ossifications in major burn injuries : An interdisciplinary challenge].

Heterotopic ossifications in peri-articular tissue can appear after severe head injury, spinal trauma or local joint trauma. Following extensive burns, heterotopic ossifications are a rare, but severe complication with an unknown pathogenesis. In a retrospective analysis of 672 patients who were treated in our burn center over the last 10 years we identified 5 cases (0.74%) of heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification in cervical disc arthroplasty: Is it clinically relevant?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the presence and clinical relevance of heterotopic ossification (HO) at 3 years mean follow-up. METHODS: Thirty patients suffering from cervical radiculopathy and/or myelopathy treated with anterior disc replacement (ADR) were studied. HO was classified using the McAfee grading system. Range of motion was measured from flexion and extension x-rays. Short-form 36 and neck disability index (NDI) assessed functional outcome. RESULTS: Forty-five prostheses were implanted in 30 patients with cervical radiculopathy and/or myelopathy,

No migration of acetabular cups after prophylaxis for heterotopic ossification.

The possibility of migration of cementless cups in total joints after prophylaxis of heterotopic ossification with irradiation or nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs is a concern. Data investigating component stability with digital methods are lacking. This prospective study analyzed the migration of cementless cups after indomethacin and irradiation prophylaxis with the digital Einzel-Bild-Röntgen-Analyse tool. The irradiation group (106 hips) and the indomethacin group (98 hips) were compared with 82 hips that did not receive any prophylaxis. The same cementless acetabular implants were used

Spinal cord insults and heterotopic ossification in the pediatric population.

Fifteen of 152 pediatric patients with spinal cord insults (10%) developed heterotopic ossification (HO) at 19 locations. The average age of the patient was eight and one-half years. The spinal cord levels were 13 thoracic and two cervical. The average time to detection of the HO from spinal insult was six and one-half years. The hip was involved in 15 of 19 HO lesions. Decreased range of motion of the affected extremity was the most common sign of occurrence. Alkaline phosphatase was elevated in five of eight patients at the time of detection. Three patients had some resorption of the HO, and

Animal models of temporomandibular joint heterotopic ossification: a scoping review.

There are few animal models for heterotopic ossification of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ-HO). This scoping review provides an overview of current knowledge on the induction methods and specific conditions required to produce TMJ-HO in various animal models. Two independent reviewers selected papers from the PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. The inclusion criteria were articles in English, in vivo studies, and a TMJ-HO induction method. Observational, in vitro, human studies, reviews, and book chapters were excluded. Twenty-four publications were included. HO was surgi

Genetic regulation of injury-induced heterotopic ossification in adult zebrafish.

Heterotopic ossification is the inappropriate formation of bone in soft tissues of the body. It can manifest spontaneously in rare genetic conditions or as a response to injury, known as acquired heterotopic ossification. There are several experimental models for studying acquired heterotopic ossification from different sources of damage. However, their tenuous mechanistic relevance to the human condition, invasive and laborious nature and/or lack of amenability to chemical and genetic screens, limit their utility. To address these limitations, we developed a simple zebrafish injury model that

Heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty: When is development completed?

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossifications (HO) are a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have proven to reduce the occurrence of HO. It is still unclear when the formation of HO is finished. Aim of our study was to answer this question. METHODS: In a prospective study, the occurrence of periarticular HO was checked during the follow-up (FU) examinations. In total, 75 consecutive patients who underwent THA were included. To ensure a high follow-up rate, only patients with a life expectancy of at least 10 years were included. A medical ossifi

Heterotopic Ossification Complicating Traumatic Ulnar Nerve Palsy in a Child.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) refers to the process of forming bony tissues in extra-skeletal sites such as muscles and soft tissues. This pathological process most commonly commences following trauma, surgery, and fractures. Rarely, HO can compress nearby neurovascular structures. To the best of our knowledge, however, no previous reports exist of HO serving as second-hit to partially injured ulnar nerve in the pediatric population. We present a case of a 6-year-old girl with complete high ulnar nerve palsy caused by medial epicondylar fracture followed by development of HO around the elbow.

Frozen abdomen complicated with midline heterotopic peritoneal ossification: case report.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification consists in abnormal differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblastic cells, which may occur in the abdominal cavity. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old male who presents with small bowel obstruction, performing a laparotomy, adhesiolysis, and managed with an open abdomen with Bogota bag; the abdominal wall was closed on the 5th post-operative day. Due to recurrent symptoms of intestinal obstruction, he required a re-laparotomy after 14 days, finding a frozen abdomen with midline calcified peritoneum. CONCLUSION: This entity is a rare benign form of ossific

Neurological heterotopic ossification: novel mechanisms, prognostic biomarkers and prophylactic therapies.

Neurological heterotopic ossification (NHO) is a debilitating condition where bone forms in soft tissue, such as muscle surrounding the hip and knee, following an injury to the brain or spinal cord. This abnormal formation of bone can result in nerve impingement, pain, contractures and impaired movement. Patients are often diagnosed with NHO after the bone tissue has completely mineralised, leaving invasive surgical resection the only remaining treatment option. Surgical resection of NHO creates potential for added complications, particularly in patients with concomitant injury to the central
