Nuclear inclusions in Paget's disease of bone.

The ultrastructure of bone cells was examined in biopsies from 18 patients with Paget's disease of bone and from 60 patients with a variety of other bone diseases. A characteristic nuclear inclusion was found in the osteoclasts of each patient with Paget's disease. The nuclear inclusion most closely resembles viral nucleocapsids of the measles type.

[Polyostotic Paget's disease of bone: diagnostic dilemma in detection of bone metastases from prostate cancer].

INTRODUCTION: Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans) is a rare metabolic disorder of bone remodeling with complex etiology. In the most cases, it is detected by coincidence, during nuclear medicine and radiological diagnostic procedures. Herein we report a case of advanced prostate cancer coexisting with asymptomatic Paget's disease. CASE REPORT: We present a 69-year-old patient, with biochemical recurrence two years after radical prostatectomy for localized prostate cancer and period of stable remission. During the evaluation of metastatic spread of prostate cancer, the bone scintigrap…

[Paget's disease of bone and basilar impression associated with an Arnold-Chiari type-1 malformation].

The patient, a 78-year-old female with history of headache and progressive gait disturbance for almost one year, was admitted to our departm … a peculiarity seldom reported. The surgical approach was rejected, but the severity of symptoms and osteitis deformans biochemical activity needed a treatment; it was orientated to modify bone turnover using etidronate, a bisphosphonate, which induced clinical improvement and a decrease in serum alkaline phosphatase as well as in other bone resorption markers, witho …

Paget's disease of the jaws: Histopathological features of a series of 31 cases.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the histopathological features of Paget's disease of the jaws observed in a series comprising 31 cases. The study comprised all cases of Paget's disease of the jaws filed in the archives of the Surgical Pathology Laboratory of the Oral Pathology Department, School of Dentistry, University of Buenos Aires, between 1960 and 2018. Their microscopic features were evaluated, and available clinical data and radiographic studies were analyzed. Paget's disease of the jaws accounted for 0.05% of retrieved oral-maxillofacial pathologies. Microscopically, all c

An update on imaging of Paget's sarcoma.

Paget's sarcoma is a rare and particularly aggressive tumour arising within pagetic bone, affecting approximately 1% of patients with Paget's disease during the course of their disease. Most of these tumours are osteosarcomas, but the age profile, skeletal distribution and clinical outcomes differ considerably from conventional osteosarcoma. In this review, we outline the clinical, radiographic/CT, scintigraphic and magnetic resonance imaging features of Paget's sarcoma. We also review the neoplastic and non-neoplastic mimics of Paget's sarcoma that should be considered in the differential dia

Management of Paget's disease of bone.

Paget's disease is a progressive focal bone condition which can result in pain, low quality of life, deformity and other complications. Disease progression can be halted with potent bisphosphonates, resulting in improvement in both quality of life and pain, and normalisation of scintigraphy, plain radiographs and bone histology. Zoledronate has transformed the treatment of Paget's disease, producing sustained remissions in almost all patients. Thus, it is now possible to normalise bone cell activity and prevent disease progression at low cost, with one or two intravenous injections of zoledron

Paget's disease of bone in a Chinese patient: a case report and review of the literature.

Although it is fairly common in the Western countries, Paget's disease of bone is very rare in Chinese individuals. Through an extensive literature search, only 8 Chinese Paget's disease cases were found in the English language literature and all were reported in local medical journals of Asia that may not be accessible to international readers. To enhance the awareness of the rarity of Paget's disease in Chinese individuals to pathologists worldwide, we present a case of Paget's disease in a 54-year-old Chinese male. We also compare the clinical features of Paget's disease reported in Chinese

[Paget's disease of bone and treatment with pamidronate].

The authors treated 18 patients with Paget's disease of bone (12 men and 6 women, age 65 +/- 5 years) with pamidronate (bisphosphonate of the second generation). Three patients from this group were treated previously without success with calcitonin or bisphosphonate of the first generation (etidronate) 50% of the patients suffered from the polyostotic form of the disease. In one patient a rare combination of primary hyperparathyroidism with Paget's bone disease was found and in another patient later an osteosarcoma developed in the affected bone. To all patients sodium pamidronate was administ

Etidronate for hypercalcemia of malignancy and osteoporosis.

The biphosphonates are becoming well established as effective agents for the treatment of metabolic bone diseases. Etidronate disodium is the only biphosphonate approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Accepted indications for etidronate therapy are symptomatic Paget's disease, heterotopic ossification and hypercalcemia of malignancy. An unapproved, but apparently successful use is treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Both oral and intravenous preparations are available. Newer biphosphonates, which may be more efficacious and less toxic than etidronate, are being studied.

Frequency and diagnostic value of the virus-like filamentous intranuclear inclusions in giant cell tumor of bone, not associated with Paget's disease. A study of 43 cases.

This paper deals with the paramyxovirus-like intranuclear inclusions observed in giant cells tumours of bone (GCTB). Twenty-one (49%) of 43 cases of GCTB (1977-1985), either fresh and/or cultured, show these ultrastructural inclusions. Fifty samples of various bone lesions in which giant cell lesions occurred, including aneurysmal cysts, hyperparathyroidism, osteoblastoma, human and rat osteopetrosis, GCT of tendon sheaths, and non skeletal granuloma were used as controls. These, together with 20 samples of normal bone (osteoclasts) did not contain intranuclear or intracytoplasmic viral inclus

Acute epidural hematoma complicating Paget's disease of the skull.

Although among Anglo-Saxons Paget's disease is relatively common, it is very rare in Japan. The incidence of Paget's disease increases as age advances, and in elderly people over 90 years of age it can be seen in as many as 10%. On the other hand, acute epidural hematoma seldom occurs in the older generation, because dural adhesion to the internal table of the skull becomes more intense. We have encountered an 86-year old woman with advanced Paget's disease who developed an acute epidural hematoma after trivial head trauma. Acute epidural hematoma complicating Paget's disease has been reported
