Acoustic impedance values in the elderly.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of age on acoustic impedance values in the elderly. Pure tone, otoscopic, and impedance testing were conducted with subjects from 20 to 29, 60 to 69, and 70 to 79 years of age. Results revealed a slight, but nonsignificant, tendency for static compliance values to decrease with age, suggesting that the use of separate compliance norms for the elderly may not be warranted.

Transoral intratracheal inoculation method for use with neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studying the effects of toxic and infective compounds on the respiratory system requires a reliable method for delivering inoculum into the distal region of the lung. Although transoral intratracheal inoculation methods have been well documented for adult rats, to the authors' knowledge, a reliable method has not been validated for neonatal rats. The purpose of the study reported here was to develop a simple method for transoral inoculation in rat neonates. METHODS: Seven-day-old Fischer 344 rats were anesthetized with halothane, and a spinal needle was inserted in the

Acute otalgia in children - findings and diagnosis.

One hundred and seventy-one children up to 15 years of age and with acute otalgia were examined to find out whether otalgia or any other symptoms were so closely related to acute otitis media (AOM) as to make otoscopic examination unnecessary. AOM was diagnosed in 46%, simplex otitis in 15%, serous otitis media (SOM) in 17%, and normal eardrums in 22%. Children with AOM had fever and spontaneous perforation of the eardrums in 78% and 30% of the cases, respectively. Of the children who had not AOM (54%), the otalgia could in most cases be classified as referred pain due to, for instance, discom

Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis of Cholesteatoma: A Systematic Review of Current Evidence.

This systematic review evaluated the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the imaging-based diagnosis of cholesteatoma. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to September 2025 identified 8,160 records, of which 7 studies met the inclusion criteria. Five studies used temporal bone CT, one investigated otoscopic images, and one assessed CT-based staging of mastoid extension. Reported internal validation accuracies were generally high (>90%), particularly with convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, while external validations showed moderate performan

An Analysis of Hearing Outcomes in Children with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome.

Aims/Background Few hearing loss studies have been conducted in patients with progeria, and only the possibility of low-frequency conductive hearing loss has been mentioned. The primary objective of this study is to perform a comprehensive analysis of the clinical audiological characteristics of children with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), and the secondary objective is to analyse the causes of their hearing loss and what can be done to enable them to hear as well as possible. Methods Ten children with HGPS underwent impedance audiometry (tympanogram), otoacoustic emissions, and

Myringotomy in dogs: Contamination rate from the external ear canal - a pilot study.

Myringotomy for sample collection from the middle ear cavity for cytology and bacterial culture is considered a routine method to diagnose otitis media in dogs. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of contamination of middle ear aspirates with material from the external ear canal obtained by video-otoscopic guided myringotomy. In canine cadavers (n = 17) free from otitis externa the external ear canals were flushed under video-otoscopic control and a fluorescent dye was instilled. After removal of residual fluid a myringotomy was performed. If air was aspirated, 1 mL of saline

Short-Wave Infrared Fluorescence Chemical Sensor for Detection of Otitis Media.

Otitis media (OM) or middle ear infection is one of the most common diseases in young children around the world. The diagnosis of OM is currently performed using an otoscope to detect middle ear fluid and inflammatory changes manifested in the tympanic membrane. However, conventional otoscopy cannot visualize across the tympanic membrane or sample middle ear fluid. This can lead to low diagnostic certainty and overdiagnoses of OM. To improve the diagnosis of OM, we have developed a short-wave infrared (SWIR) otoscope in combination with a protease-cleavable biosensor, 6QC-ICG, which can facili

Non-invasive optical interferometry for the assessment of biofilm growth in the middle ear.

Otitis media (OM) is the most common illness in children in the United States. Three-fourths of children under the age of three have OM at least once. Children with chronic OM, including OM with effusion and recurrent OM, will often have conductive hearing loss and communication difficulties, and need surgical treatment. Recent clinical studies provide evidence that almost all chronic OM cases are accompanied by a bacterial biofilm behind the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and within the middle ear. Biofilms are typically very thin, and cannot be recognized using a regular otoscope. Here we demon

[Acute otitis media in children].

Acute otitis media (A.O.M.) occurs mainly in children. The first peak of this disease appears between 6-18 month of life, and the second between 4-7 year of age. The younger age at which the first A.O.M. incidence is noted, the higher probability of its recurrence. In Poland 65% of children up to the 2 year of age suffer from otitis media once, and 30% more than three times. The portal of infection in a.o.m. comprises: (1) Eustachian tube (2) Blood vessels (3) External auditory meatus with perforated tympanic membrane. In ca. 30% of a.o.m. the causative agents are viruses, while in 70% the dis

Efficacy of fluralaner against Otodectes cynotis infestations in dogs and cats.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of fluralaner for the treatment of Otodectes cynotis infestations in dogs and cats was evaluated after oral (dogs) or topical administration (dogs and cats). Twenty-four dogs and sixteen cats were experimentally infested with O. cynotis and randomly allocated to equal sized groups (n = 8/group). Dog groups were treated once, either orally with fluralaner at a minimum dose of 25 mg/kg body weight, topically with fluralaner at a dose of 25 mg/kg body weight or topically with saline solution (control). Cat groups were treated once, either topically with fluralaner at a do

BACKGROUND: Historical vignettes are often included in scientific otological articles. However, they may contain inaccuracies and errors whe … exist because of confusion with the original terminology of referring to an instrument, such as the otoscopes of Toynbee and Brunton, inaccuracies in dates, misinterpretation of the original text, such as the attribution to Charcot as the first to propose the intracranial division of the eighth nerve in Menière's disease, and problems of translation (e.g., …

[Cholesteatoma: rare, but can have serious consequences].

Cholesteatoma is a mass formed by the keratinizing squamous epithelium in the tympanic cavity and/or mastoid that can lead to the destruction of surrounding structures in the ear. It can arise at any age. Symptoms are non-specific and diagnosis may be difficult on otoscopic examination. The management of cholesteatoma is surgical; mastoid obliteration has reduced the incidence of recurrent cholesteatoma in recent years. The use of diffusion-weighted MRI has proven to be a reliable technique for the detection and follow-up of cholesteatoma.

Assessing middle ear disease: beyond visual otoscopy.

Visual otoscopy, the first step in the diagnosis of middle ear conditions, permits an assessment based on the color and appearance of the tympanic membrane. With pneumatic otoscopy, the mobility of the tympanic membrane can be evaluated. Several other techniques can be used to augment visual and pneumatic otoscopy. Impedance tympanometry provides an objective record of tympanic membrane movement. The acoustic otoscope evaluates middle ear contents by the reflectivity of sound from the tympanic membrane.
