Pakistan is one of the 34 countries that have not achieved the neonatal tetanus (NT) global elimination target set by the World Health Organization (WHO). NT, caused by Clostridium tetani, is a highly fatal infection of the neonatal period. It is one of the most underreported diseases and remains a major but preventable cause of neonatal and infant mortality in many developing countries. In 1989, the World Health Assembly called for the elimination of NT by 1995, and since then considerable progress has been made using the following strategies: clean delivery practices, routine tetanus toxoid …

The Karachi cancer registry established in 1995 was the first population-based cancer registry in Pakistan. Cancer registration is done by active methods. The registry contributed data on survival for selected cancers of the head and neck registered during 1995-1999. FoLlow-up has been carried out predominantly by active methods with the median follow-up time ranging between 29-36 months for different cancers. The proportion of histologically verified diagnosis for various cancers ranged between 98-100%; there were no cases as death certificates only (DCOs); 86-93% of total registered cases we…

A team of veterinary doctors/researchers from institute visited the place and collected the samples and information in all aspects related to any disease occurrence on epidemiological basis. Animals were also showing symptoms confusing with rabies. Brain samples were collected for rabies testing. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PC…

INTRODUCTION: Four weeks after the earthquake in Kashmir, Pakistan, multidisciplinary surgical teams were organized within the United Kingdom to help treat disaster victims who had been transferred to Rawalpindi. The work of these teams between 05-17 November 2005 is reviewed, and experiences and lessons learned are presented.
METHODS: Two self-sufficient teams consisting of orthopedic, plastic surgical, anesthetic, and theatre staff were deployed consecutively over a two-week period. A trauma unit was set up in a donated ward within a private ophthalmological hospital in Rawalpindi.

This molecular genetics study was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan from 2004 to 2006 to provide guidelines for prenatal diagnosis programmes in the country. Blood samples of patients with beta-thalassaemia minor (n=200) and beta-thalassaemia major (n=150) were collected from hospitals, transfusion centres and diagnostic laboratories from different districts of Karachi, representing 5 major ethnic groups. Molecular analysis revealed 11 genetic mutations of the beta-thalassaemia gene, among which 5 mutations accounted for 88% of the total beta-thalassaemia genes identified [IVS-1-5 (G-C), Fr 8/9 (…

Afghanistan and Pakistan, two of the four remaining countries where wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission has never been interrupted, represent one epidemiologic reservoir. During 2008, both countries continued to conduct coordinated supplemental immunization activities (SIAs) against type 1 WPV (WPV1) and type 3 WPV (WPV3) using oral polio vaccine (OPV). Much of Afghanistan remained polio-free in 2008, with the exception of the conflict-affected South Region. In Pakistan, however, WPV transmission increased, particularly after WPV1 reintroduction into polio-free areas of Punjab Province. In tota…

Of the four countries worldwide where wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission has never been interrupted, Pakistan and Afghanistan are considered a single epidemiologic block. Use of intense poliomyelitis eradication measures, including close coordination between the two countries and increased use of monovalent oral poliovirus vaccines (mOPVs) against type 1 WPV (WPV1) and type 3 WPV (WPV3), has reduced WPV transmission to historically low levels. However, despite these efforts, in 2007 both types of WPV continued to circulate in areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ongoing conflicts and security co…

Juvenile colorectal polyps are the most common cause of pediatric hematochezia and contribute to significant morbidity if not treated early. This report describes an experience with juvenile colorectal polyps in children (< or =14 years) from Pakistan. In a 3-year period, 154 polyps were documented in 129 children. The mean age at presentation was 5.2 years, with a male predominance. Most children presented with painless rectal bleeding (+/-13 months) associated with other symptoms, such as protrusion of a mass through the anus, diarrhea, and recurrent abdominal pain. Anemia was observed in 54…

We report a case of ciprofloxacin treatment failure in a typhoid fever patient at a tertiary care hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. This case shows not only the emergence of fluoroquinolone resistance in typhoid salmonellae but also the inadequacy of the current laboratory guidelines for detection of this resistance.

We designed a multi-hospital prospective study of children less than 12 years to determine the comparative clinical profile, severity of carditis, and outcome on follow up of patients suffering an initial and recurrent episodes of acute rheumatic fever. The study extended over a period of 3 years, with diagnosis based on the Jones criteria. We included 161 children in the study, 57 having only one episode and 104 with recurrent episodes. Those seen in the first episode were differentiated from those with recurrent episodes on the basis of the history. The severity of carditis was graded by cli

Injuries result in major financial and productivity losses to nations while inflicting tremendous personal burden on the injured and their families. Two-thirds of the global deaths from injuries occur in the developing world, consuming substantial health sector resources. Pakistan is a developing country with a population of 136 million and no reported estimate of the national impact of injuries. This study presents a profile of injuries in Pakistan, estimates the impact on the country and recommends strategies to further delineate this important public health problem. A methodical review of p…

OBJECTIVES: Antibodies to dengue viruses have occasionally been reported in individuals in Pakistan, but the frequency of occurrence of dengue infection in Pakistan is unclear. The first confirmed dengue hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Pakistan occurred in 1994. In October 1995, the authors investigated an outbreak of a febrile illness among employees of a construction contractor at a power generation plant in Baluchistan, Pakistan, to determine the cause of illness and recommend appropriate preventive measures.
METHODS: The work site and living arrangements were inspected, a questionnaire was …

In order to determine the incidence of persistence of high intestinal lactase activity (PLA) in a Pakistani human population, 53 probands belonging to the Punjabi ethnic group were examined using a lactose tolerance test. The incidence of PLA in the sample was found to be 55%, which has been compared with the incidence in other ethnic groups racially or geographically related to the Pakistani population. Various possible explanations for the fairly high incidence of PLA in the Punjabi ethnic group have been discussed.

Parathyroid abnormalities and gland diseases are classified as hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism. These conditions are often discovered incidentally during screenings for abnormal serum calcium levels, typically conducted for renal or bone diseases and other disorders. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays a crucial biological role in maintaining ionized calcium and phosphate levels within the normal range by activating specific receptor-mediated cell responses throughout the body. Compared to the Western world, Pakistan has significantly fewer publications on parathyroid diseases. Most ava…

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the distribution and prevalence of different M. tuberculosis lineages can help public health authorities and researchers track the spread of tuberculosis (TB). Some lineages are thought to be more virulent, transmissible, and prone to drug resistance. Here, we sought to find the major lineages and sublineages of M. tuberculosis circulating in Pakistan.
METHODS: A total of 396 whole-genome sequencing datasets were retrieved from NCBI and TB research centers.
RESULTS: In the current study, only four lineages and 21 sublineages have been detected in 396 genomic isola…
