[Remarks on the psychological and cultural problems encountered in self-palpation for the early diagnosis of breast neoplasms].

It remains quite difficult, both psychologically and culturally, to perform and to correctly perform self-palpation of the breast. The present work attempts to investigate the causes of these difficulties and to identify the education needed to create a harmonious relationship with one's own body. This relationship is based essentially on representations of the structure and image of the body. The results of a survey conducted among the student midwives at the Isernia School of Obstetrics are also reported and reveal a widespread desire to delegate responsibility for the problem.

Comparison of tracheal tube cuff pressure with two techniques: fixed volume versus pilot balloon palpation.

Introduction: Filling tracheal tube cuff (TTC) after intubation is necessary to provide a safe airway in intubated patients. On the other hand, excessive increase or decrease in the pressure of TTC's balloon leads into the dangerous complications such as necrosis and/or aspiration. Accordingly, in the present study, we tried to evaluate the most two common fixed volume and pilot balloon palpitation methods to control TTC pressure. Methods: In a prospective cross-sectional study that was carried out in the emergency department of Tabriz Imam Reza hospital upon 194 patients who needed intubation

Relationship between temporomandibular disorders, widespread palpation tenderness, and multiple pain conditions: a case-control study.

UNLABELLED: The multiple bodily pain conditions in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have been associated with generalized alterations in pain processing. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the presence of widespread body palpation tenderness (WPT) and the likelihood of multiple comorbid pain conditions in TMD patients and controls. This case-control study was conducted in 76 TMD subjects with WPT, 83 TMD subjects without WPT, and 181 non-TMD matched control subjects. The study population was also characterized for clinical pain, experimental pain sensitivity, an

Virtual 3D landmark palpation in clubfoot: feasibility of an innovative standardized morphometric protocol. A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Reliable morphological assessment remains a clinical challenge in congenital clubfoot management, as current clinical scoring systems fail to capture the complex three-dimensional anatomy required for precise evaluation and treatment planning. Virtual palpation of anatomical landmarks offers a standardized, objective approach to define bony axes, but requires rigorous validation to become clinically applicable. METHODS: 3D models (dried clubfoot and normal foot) were reconstructed from segmented CT scan datasets using image segmentation. For reproducibility purpose, thirty-two ana

Enhancing the Localization of Uterine Leiomyomas Through Cutaneous Softness Rendering for Robot-Assisted Surgical Palpation Applications.

Integrating tactile feedback for lump localization in Robot-assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RMIS) represents an open research issue, which is still far to be solved. Main reasons for this are related e.g. to the need for a transparent connection with the teleoperating console, and an intuitive decoding of the delivered information. In this article, we focus on the specific case of RMIS treatment of uterine leiomyomas or fibroids, where little has been done in haptics to improve the outcomes of robotics-enabled palpation tasks. In this article, we propose the usage of a wearable haptic int

Diagnostic accuracy of preoperative palpation- versus ultrasound-guided thyroid fine needle aspiration cytology: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the mainstay for diagnosis of malignancy, and is an integral part of current thyroid nodule assessment. The present study analyzes the diagnostic accuracy of palpation-directed versus ultrasound guided fine-needle aspiration in patients who underwent surgery for thyroid nodules. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all consecutive patients who had FNA biopsy (palpation or ultrasound guided) of thyroid nodules and underwent thyroid gland surgery between 1998 and 2014 was conducted. The FNA findings of the palpation-guided and ultrasound-g

Gradient-based 3D skin roughness rendering from an in-vivo skin image for dynamic haptic palpation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Many studies have revealed the importance of palpation for dermatologists; however, palpation is not always possible due to the risk of secondary infections or the risk of damaging the affected area. Thus, haptic rendering for indirect palpation using in-vivo skin images, which will enable to examine a real three-dimensional (3D) skin sample by virtual touch without directly palpating the infected skin area, could be a useful technology in dermatology. METHODS: We propose a new method of accurate 3D skin surface reconstruction using simple gradients from a single skin imag

Ultrasound-guided internal jugular venous cannulation in infants: a prospective comparison with the traditional palpation method.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous cannulation of the internal jugular vein in infants is technically more difficult and carries a higher risk of carotid artery puncture than in older children and adults. In this prospective study, the authors tested their hypothesis that using an ultrasound scanner would increase the success of internal jugular cannulation and decrease the incidence of carotid artery puncture in infants. METHODS: After approval from the institutional review board and receipt of written informed parental consent, 95 infants scheduled for cardiac surgery were randomized prospectively in

Pyloric volume: an important factor in the surgeon's ability to palpate the pyloric "olive" in hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether the size of the pyloric mass is one of the factors in the surgeon's ability to palpate the pyloric "olive". MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ultrasonographic images and medical records of 60 infants with surgically confirmed hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) were reviewed. The pyloric diameter (PD) and pyloric length (PL) were measured and the pyloric volume (PV) was calculated using the equation PV = 1/4pi x (PD)2 x PL. Based on the pediatric surgeon's physical examination the infants were divided into two groups: those with and tho

Numerical modelling of a vascular palpation device for assessing intracranial aneurysm wall mechanics under heterogeneous conditions.

BACKGROUND: The mechanical properties of the intracranial aneurysm wall are not taken into account in current rupture risk scores. A deformation device prototype was previously developed to characterize aneurysm wall mechanics in vivo through controlled deformation and inverse analysis. Its ability to detect localized mechanical heterogeneities within the aneurysm wall has not been assessed. METHODS: A finite element fluid-structure interaction model of a representative cerebral artery with a saccular aneurysm was developed. Seven mechanical models were considered: homogeneous walls, globally

Robotic Palpation for Spatiotemporal Arterial Pulse Quantification and Mapping Using Multilevel Microdome-Based Soft Pressure Sensors.

Humanoid robots have advanced capabilities through physical and physiological examinations, but their reliance on visual information limits biological-object assessment, underscoring the need for tactile perception. Current tactile systems primarily detect basic contact using a limited number of sensors, hindering accurate soft-object localization and physiological signal acquisition. This study introduces a robotic palpation strategy by utilizing a fully soft-tactile-sensor-integrated humanoid hand for real-time spatiotemporal arterial pulse diagnosis. A facile fabrication technique produces

Ultrasound-guided versus palpation-guided radial artery cannulation in patients with obesity: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Radial artery cannulation is often more difficult in patients with obesity because arterial landmarks may be less reliable and the vessel may be deeper from the skin surface. Whether ultrasound guidance improves cannulation outcomes in this subgroup remains uncertain. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center, randomized, assessor-blinded trial, adults with body mass index >30 kg/m2 scheduled for elective laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and requiring radial artery cannulation were assigned to ultrasound-guided cannulation using a short-axis out-of-plane technique or to palpation
