Detection of Mansonella ozzardi in peripheral blood in two malaria-endemic areas in Panama.

INTRODUCTION: Studies conducted in 1984 demonstrated the presence of Mansonella ozzardi in the Darien and Colon provinces. Since then, there have not been further reports of this parasitic infection in Panama. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a cross-sectional assessment of peripheral blood samples of individuals across Panama over a 4-year period (2013-2016) as part of malaria surveillance activities. RESULTS: We identified microfilaria in 96 cases. Most of these cases were found in East Panama (78%) followed by the Darien region (22%). Mansonella ozzardi was the filarial parasite identified by mo

Performance of immunohistochemistry as a useful tool for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama, Central America.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most frequent parasitic zoonoses in Panama. Currently, conventional, molecular and histopathological tests are performed to diagnose CL. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has proven to be a valuable tool to facilitate the diagnosis of leishmaniasis and to study the cellular immune response developed during the infection. Therefore, considering the absence of IHC in the diagnostic routine in Panama, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the usefulness of this test as a complementary diagnostic tool for improving the sensitivity of histopathology (HP)

American trypanosomiasis, or Chagas disease, in Panama: a chronological synopsis of ecological and epidemiological research.

American trypanosomiasis, or Chagas disease, is a growing public health problem in Panama, and further forest degradation due to human population growth is expected to worsen the situation. Most people infected with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi are silently ill, and their life expectancy is severely compromised, which contributes to further deterioration of living conditions in endemic regions. Here, we review the outcomes of nearly 100 years of ecological and epidemiological investigation about Chagas disease in Panama, in an attempt to highlight progress, identify needs, and re-orient futu

A survey of intestinal parasitism in a community on the Pan American Highway route in eastern Panama.

A survey of intestinal parasitism was conducted at Yaviza, a town in eastern Panama's Province of Darien. Single stool specimens from 202 persons, representing 11 percent of the town's total population, were examined. In all, 181 (90 per cent) of the specimens examined were found positive for one or more potentially pathogenic parasites. The most common parasite found was Trichuris trichiura, which was observed in 80 per cent of the samples. Others were Ascaris lumbricoides, in 62 per cent of the samples; hookworm, in 41 per cent; Entamoeba histolytica, in 16 per cent; Stronhyloides stercorali

Validation of the PANAMA Score in Patients With Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Undergoing Distal Pancreatectomy.

BACKGROUND: The PANAMA score was developed as a post-NAT prognostic tool for PDAC. Prior validations have been dominated by pancreatic head cancers. Pancreatic body and tail tumours represent a biologically distinct subgroup and remain underrepresented in NAT cohorts. Whether the score reliably predicts outcomes in distal PDAC remains unknown. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at a single centre including patients with PDAC who received NAT followed by distal pancreatectomy between January 2015 and December 2024. Patients were stratified into low-, intermediate- and high-risk group

Cryptic transmission of a SARS-CoV-2 variant detected by wastewater surveillance in Panama.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role of viral genomic surveillance, prompting numerous countries to enhance their monitoring systems for acute respiratory infections (ARIs), especially influenza-like illnesses (ILIs). Given the significance of asymptomatic cases in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission, cases often undetected by the ILI surveillance, a more comprehensive approach was essential to track the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants in the population. In response, many countries swiftly adopted wastewater surveillance, which allowed th

Evaluation of cytochrome b sequence to identify Leishmania species and variants: the case of Panama.

BACKGROUND: The genetic heterogeneity of Leishmania parasites is a major factor responsible for the wide variety of Leishmania-associated manifestations. Consequently, understanding the genetic make-up of Leishmania species using suitable molecular markers is an important component of realising local and regional scale disease risk. The cytochrome b (cytb) is frequently used to type New World Leishmania species. However, its potential to discriminate Leishmania species and variants requires further evaluation. OBJECTIVES: To explore the capacity of cytb gene to identify New World Leishmania s

Institutional Delivery and Satisfaction among Indigenous and Poor Women in Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama.

Indigenous women in Mesoamerica experience disproportionately high maternal mortality rates and are less likely to have institutional deliveries. Identifying correlates of institutional delivery, and satisfaction with institutional deliveries, may help improve facility utilization and health outcomes in this population. We used baseline surveys from the Salud Mesoamérica Initiative to analyze data from 10,895 indigenous and non-indigenous women in Guatemala and Mexico (Chiapas State) and indigenous women in Panama. We created multivariable Poisson regression models for indigenous (Guatemala, M

Clinical cytohistologic correlations of lesions of the female genital tract: our experience in Panama.

Between 1982 and 2002, applying the uterine/cervix cancer prevention protocol of the Gynecology Institute of the University of Padua [1] modified to our needs, we diagnosed 5,008 (53.8%) cases of oncogenic risk out of 9,312 evaluated patients. Values were obtained through the analysis of three diagnostic methodologies: colposcopy, cytology and directed biopsy, taking into consideration the limitations of each one of these and their effectiveness in identifying specific abnormalities or pathologies. The results fully demonstrate that the integration of the three diagnostic methodologies is nece

Ancon Hospital: an American Hospital during the construction of the Panama Canal, 1904-1914.

The control of yellow fever, malaria, and other tropical diseases was essential for the successful completion of the Panama Canal. COL William C. Gorgas, Chief Sanitary Officer, found Ancon Hospital quite satisfactory as a site from which to direct his sanitation efforts. Ancon Hospital played an important role during the period of the excavation of the canal (1904-1914). In 1928, Ancon Hospital was renamed Gorgas Hospital to commemorate this achievement. After more than a century of clinical and research activities in Panama, Ancon Hospital closed its doors in 1997.

Zoonotic Sporotrichosis Related to Cat Contact: First Case Report from Panama in Central America.

A previously healthy 34-year-old man presented with a four-week-old upper arm injury that started with a cat scratch and progressed into painless erythematous nodular ascending lesions in the left upper limb. We made the diagnosis of sporotrichosis based on the epidemiological association of the contact with a cat and culture identification. Sporotrichosis is a mycosis implantation caused by the Sporothrix schenckii complex. We present the first Central American case of sporotrichosis associated with contact with a feline.

Bots (Diptera: Oestridae) infesting a neotropical forest rodent, Proechimys semispinosus (Rodentia: Echimyidae), in Panama.

Botfly larvae (Cuterebra sp.) infesting spiny rats (Proechimys semispinosus) in 8 small islands in the Panama Canal were studied. Rats were live trapped monthly on each island from January 1991 through February 2000 and visually examined for the presence of bots. Overall, bot prevalence was 4.6% and differed statistically among island rat populations. Rats were simultaneously infested by as many as 4 bots. Overall bot intensity was 1.3 bots per infested rat and did not differ among islands. Mean bot density across all islands was 0.0111 and was greater during the dry seasons than during the ra

Isolation of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 2 from Guaymi Indians in Panama.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is associated with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and with a chronic degenerative myelopathy. However, another major type of HTLV, HTLV-II, has been isolated only sporadically, and little is known of disease associations, transmission routes, and risk factors for HTLV-II infection. Recent studies indicate that a high percentage of certain groups of i.v. drug users and blood donors are infected with HTLV-II. Seroepidemiologic studies have found an elevated rate of seroreactivity to HTLV among Guaymi Indians from Bocas del Toro Province, Panama. To iden

Epidemiology of epilepsy in Guaymi Indians from Bocas del Toro Province, Republic of Panama.

This cross-sectional study was conducted to describe the epidemiology of epilepsy in Guaymi Indians residing in Changuinola, a small town on Panama's Caribbean coast near Costa Rica. We randomly selected households and attempted to enroll all residents aged less than or equal to 1 year; 337 eligible subjects agreed to participate (93% response rate). We administered a standard neurologic disease screening examination to all subjects and, if any abnormality was found, we administered a standard neurologic evaluation. We detected 19 cases of active epilepsy; the mean age at onset was 12 years, a
