Normal rats were given intravenous doses of either immune serum or immunoglobulin fractions 24 hr before oral challenge with 1,000 eggs of Taenia taeniaeformis. Total eosinophil counts per mm3 were performed for 3 days prior to and 6 days after challenge. Sensitized rats usually showed sharp peaks of eosinophilia 2 to 6 days after this dose. The pattern of the eosinophilic response was similar to that which occurs after challenge of immune infected rats. A 66-year-old patient, undergoing heart surgery, developed an anaphylactic reaction following the first administration of a test-dose of aprotinin. Skin tests were performed six months later. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis tests were used to examine the IgE responses of cats repeatedly infected with the filarial nematode Brugia pahangi. Specific IgE was usually detected only in those cats that killed their adult worms and rarely in those cats in which adult worms survived for long periods. We suggest that this specific IgE is actively involved in killing adult worms in the lymphatics.

Anaphylactic swelling is induced in the hind paws of mice and rats by intravenous challenge of antigen 72 h after subplantar injection of mouse IgE-rich antiserum into the paws, and can be quantified rapidly and accurately by measuring paw thickness. The edema model described may serve as an alternative to passive cutaneous anaphylaxis for studying immediate allergic reactions with mouse homocytotropic antibodies and screening potential antiallergic drugs.

Lipopolysaccharide extracts of E. coli (endotoxins) were toxic to normal adult guinea-pigs, yet no evidence was found of serological reactivity to endotoxins or of "immediate" dermal reactivity in vivo. In contrast, testing of the serum of experimentally immunized animals provided evidence of precipitins, agglutinins and haemolysins. It is concluded that endotoxin exerts toxic effects in the absence of significant antibody production. This suggests that endotoxin toxicity is independent of immune processes not involving cell-mediated responses.
