Parental age as a risk factor for isolated congenital malformations in a Polish population.

Currently available data on the relationship between the prevalence of isolated congenital malformations and parental age are inconsistent and frequently divergent. We utilised the data from the Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations (PRCM) to accurately assess the interplay between maternal and paternal age in the risk of isolated non-syndromic congenital malformations. Out of 902 452 livebirths we studied 8683 children aged 0-2 years registered in the PRCM. Logistic regression was used to simultaneously adjust the risk estimates for maternal and paternal age. Our data indicated that pat…

Somatic segregation errors predominantly contribute to the gain or loss of a paternal chromosome leading to uniparental disomy for chromosome 15.

Paternal uniparental disomy (UPD) for chromosome 15 (UPD15), which is found in approximately 2% of Angelman syndrome (AS) patients, is much … -zygotic error is also typically involved in loss of the paternal chromosome. The mean maternal and paternal ages of 33.4 and 39.4 years, respectively, for paternal UPD15 cases are increased as compared with normal controls. This may be simply the consequence of an age association with maternal non-disjunction leading to nullisomy for chromosome 15 in the oocy …

The intergenerational effects of paternal incarceration on children's social and psychological well-being from early childhood to adolescence.

The present study sought to unravel the psychological processes through which mass incarceration, specifically paternal incarceration, is negatively affecting the next generation of children. Data came from 4,327 families from 20 cities who participated in a 10-year longitudinal study. Parents and children reported on children's rule-breaking behaviors and depressive symptoms when they were on average ages 5 (2003-2006), 9 (2007-2010), and 15 (2014-2017). Parental surveys and disposition information were combined to assess paternal incarceration at each age. Results showed that children who ex

Risk of dominant mutation in older fathers: evidence from osteogenesis imperfecta.

The mean paternal age at birth of 80 presumed mutant cases of dominant osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) was significantly higher than that of population controls and remained so after adjusting for maternal age. There was also an increase in mean maternal age (not significant) which disappeared after adjusting for paternal age. No significant increase in maternal or paternal age was found in cases having OI either of a dominant type with an affected parent or of a type (Sillence type III) usually regarded as recessive. We conclude that, as in certain other dominant conditions, the risk of mutant O…

Effect of paternal body mass index on neonatal outcomes of singletons after frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles: analysis of 7,908 singleton newborns.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of paternal body mass index (BMI) on neonatal outcomes of singletons after frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary-care academic medical center. PATIENT(S): A total of 7,908 singleton newborns were divided into four categories based on their paternal BMI: 284 (3.6%) infants were in the paternal underweight category, 4,678 (59.2%) infants were in the paternal normal weight category, 2,585 (32.7%) infants were in the paternal overweight category, and 361 (4.6%) infants were in the paternal obesity c

Parental origin of mutations in sporadic cases of Treacher Collins syndrome.

In some autosomal dominant conditions, there is a correlation between new mutations and paternal age, with new mutations arising almost exclusively in the male germ line. To test this hypothesis in Treacher Collins syndrome, we analyzed 22 sporadic cases, determining the parental origin of the pathogenic mutation in 10 informative families. Mutations were found to be of both paternal and maternal origin, without a detectable parental age effect, confirming that a paternal age effect is not universal to all autosomal dominant disorders. A discussion on the parental origin of mutations and pater…

Influences of paternal incarceration on children's maltreatment and polyvictimization risks.

BACKGROUND: Paternal incarceration is associated with child maltreatment. However, clarity on its influence across types is needed. Additionally, maltreatment exposures may co-occur and how paternal incarceration influences children's polyvictimization is not yet known. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influences of paternal incarceration on childhood emotional, physical, and sexual maltreatment by caregivers, as well as their exposure to multiple forms. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Adolescents in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were followed from Wave I (1994-5) (ave

The effect of paternal factors on perinatal and paediatric outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal factors, including increasing childbearing age and various life-style factors, are associated with poorer short- and long-term outcomes for children, whereas knowledge of paternal parameters is limited. Recently, increasing paternal age has been associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, birth defects, autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia in children. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: The aim of this systematic review is to describe the influence of paternal factors on adverse short- and long-term child outcomes. SEARCH METHODS: PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases up to…

Paternal height has an impact on birth weight of their offspring in a Japanese population: the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

This study examines the relationship between paternal height or body mass index (BMI) and birth weight of their offspring in a Japanese general population. The sample included 33,448 pregnant Japanese women and used fixed data, including maternal, paternal and infant characteristics, from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), an ongoing nationwide birth cohort study. Relationships between paternal height or BMI and infant birth weight [i.e., small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA)] were examined using a multinomial logistic regression model. Since fetal

A nationwide analysis of the association between parental age and incidence of cleft lip/palate.

INTRODUCTION: In several high-income Western countries, parenthood has increasingly been deferred to a higher age. This epidemiological study aimed to assess the relationship between maternal and paternal age and the incidence of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without the presence of a cleft palate (CLP) and cleft palate only (CP) in the United States (US). METHODS: We examined 22,669,736 births using a US-based cohort from 2016 to 2021. Dependent variables were non-syndromic CLP and CP. Independent variables included maternal age, race, education, and cigarette use. A separate set of modeli…

Paternal preconception exposure to non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs or opioids and adverse birth outcomes: A nationwide registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Paternal use of analgesics during the time of conception and adverse birth outcomes are poorly studied. We investigated the association between paternal exposure to non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids within 3 months before the date of conception and the risk of adverse birth outcomes (preterm birth, small for gestational age, low Apgar score, and major congenital malformations). METHODS: We used nationwide data from the Danish health registers. We included information on all singleton live births, and their fathers and mothers from 1997 to 2018. We created two

Impact of paternal presence and parental social-demographic characteristics on birth outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal race, marital status, and social environment impact risk of preterm delivery and size for gestational age. Although some paternal characteristics such as age are associated with pregnancy outcomes, the influence of the paternal presence, race/ethnicity and adverse life events is not well known. The objective of the study was to assess birth outcomes in mothers with a paternal presence compared to those without during the post-partum period. The secondary aim was to determine whether paternal race is associated with birth outcomes. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study

Associations Between Paternal Pre-Conceptional Body Mass Index and Lifestyle Factors and Offspring Weight Development.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pre-conceptional paternal factors, including BMI and diet, may influence offspring development. OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations between paternal BMI, dietary protein intake, glycemic index (GI), smoking and alcohol consumption and offspring development during the first 5 years of life. METHODS: This secondary analysis of an RCT included 162 father-child pairs from pregnancies among women with pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity. Paternal characteristics were reported at gestational week 15, reflecting the preceding 3 months. Offspring anthropometry
