An extensive physiological literature, including experimental and clinical studies in humans, demonstrates that activation of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system, by either contralateral sound or electrical stimulation, can produce significant alterations in cochlear function and suggests a role for the MOC system in influencing the auditory behavior of binaural hearing. The present data are from psychophysical studies in nonhuman primates which seek to determine if the noted physiological changes in response to contralateral acoustic stimulation have a perceptual counterpart. Background Traditional semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs) are restricted to single-phoneme tasks due to the semi-occlusion at the mouth, which hinders full articulation, continuous speech, and singing. Innovative SOVTEs should overcome this limitation by creating the semi-occlusion outside the oral cavity. Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of a semi-occluded water resistance ventilation mask, which allows for continuous speech and singing, on objective (voice range, multiparametric voice quality indices) and subjective (auditory-perceptual, se

People with schizophrenia (SZ) exhibit visual processing abnormalities that affect their daily functioning and remediating these deficits might help to improve functioning. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a potential tool for perceptual enhancement for this purpose, though there are no reports of tDCS applied to visual cortex in SZ. In a within-subject, crossover design, we evaluated the effects of tDCS on visual processing in 27 SZ. All patients received anodal, cathodal, or sham stimulation over the central occipital region in 3 visits separated by 1 week. In each visit, a

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated speech acoustics and self-reported vocal symptoms in mask-wearing healthcare professionals. We hypothesized that there would be an attenuation of spectral energies and increase in vocal effort during masked speech compared to unmasked speech.
STUDY DESIGN: Within and between subject quasi-experimental design.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 21 healthcare providers (13 cisgender female, 8 cisgender male; M = 32.9 years; SD = 7.9 years) and assessed acoustics and perceptual measures with and without a face mask in place. Measurements included: 1) acous

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how children recognize facial emotions is essential for explaining the development of social communication. During the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread mask-wearing partially occluded facial expressions, potentially influencing children's emotion recognition processes.
METHODS: This study investigated age-related differences in emotion recognition accuracy and gaze fixation patterns in young children using eye-tracking technology. Participants included 36 three-year-olds and 45 five-year-olds. Children viewed facial expressions representing four emotions (joy, sadness

Deficient perception and cognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been attributed to slow information processing and attentional disturbance, but an additional explanation may be reduced signal strength. In 21 individuals with probable AD, 29 healthy older and 54 younger adults, we enhanced the contrast level of rapidly-flashed masked letters. The AD group reached identification criterion (80% accuracy), but required significantly higher contrast than the control groups. A source of the prevalent masking deficit may be reduced signal strength arising from dysfunction of retina or visual corte

Acute and chronic schizophrenic subjects were tested with 6 simple experimental tasks of visual stimulus selection. The 2 control groups were a group of non-psychiatric subjects and one of patients with other psychiatric diagnoses. The 6 experimental tasks represented three different types of attention: 1) differentiation between "figure" and "background", 2) concentration; 3) visual integration (Gestalt completion). The main result was that the acute group with paranoidal psychosis and hallucinations made significantly more mistakes in figure-background differentiation (grouping of patterns).

Saccadic eye movements produce a rapid visual motion stimulation that remains unseen, a phenomenon known as saccadic omission. We have recently suggested that the sensorimotor system selectively habituates to, and thereby omits, the visual contingencies of saccades. In previous studies, a passive mechanism of saccadic omission was proposed in which the post-saccadic image serves as a backward mask to hide intra-saccadic motion from awareness. Here, we directly compared these theories using stimuli optimized for intra-saccadic vision: high-speed gratings that become visible only during the exec

The human visual system excels at recognizing occluded objects, yet the temporal dynamics of recurrent processing in this task remain unclear. Using high-temporal-resolution Electroencephalography (EEG), backward masking, and deep neural networks (DNNs), we employed a two-stage paradigm to investigate recurrent processing in occluded object recognition. In Experiment 1, we manipulated occlusion levels and applied multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and temporal generalization analysis (TGA) to investigate the neural differences in object recognition across varying degrees of occlusion. In Exp

The relative motion between the surface of an object and our fingers produces patterns of skin deformation such as stretch, indentation, and vibrations. In this study, we hypothesized that motion-induced vibrations are combined with other tactile cues for the discrimination of tactile speed. Specifically, we hypothesized that vibrations provide a critical cue to tactile speed on surfaces lacking individually detectable features like dots or ridges. Thus masking vibrations unrelated to slip motion should impair the discriminability of tactile speed, and the effect should be surface-dependent. T

PURPOSE: Vision screening programs often rely on acuity measures to detect significant refractive error and clinicians use measures of acuity to monitor refractive treatment. This study investigated the effects of induced astigmatism on visual acuity (VA) using several paediatric acuity tests: the Keeler LogMAR crowded and single letter acuity tests, the single letter Sheridan Gardiner chart, and the crowded and single Kay picture tests.
METHODS: Six fully-corrected emmetropic adults had induced astigmatic blur imposed at different axes of astigmatism (90°, 180°, 135°, 45°). Astigmatic errors

Perspective is usually considered a monocular pictorial cue, distinct from other cues such as occlusion and stereopsis. We cut across these distinctions by asking whether purely binocular (cyclopean) contours, created by stereoscopically shifting a region of homogeneous texture nearer or further than its surround, can act as a linear-perspective cue and whether the contours' ability to do this is influenced by their surface belongingness. We found that the left/right orientation of cyclopean trapezoids nearer than a surround strongly influenced perceived slant, showing that perspective constra

Short latency vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs) to linear acceleration impulses (L-VsEPs) are initiated in the otolith organs (saccule and utricle). Some of the saccule afferents have been reported to respond not only to linear acceleration, but also to high intensity acoustic stimuli. If so, the L-VsEP recorded from the saccule (elicited with the stimulus orientated relative to the head so as to optimally activate the saccule, i.e. stimulus in the vertical plane, Z-VsEP) should be reduced during high intensity broad band noise (BBN) "masking". Conversely, the utricular afferents have been

The recovery from prior stimulation of the compound action potential (CAP) was measured using a forward masking stimulus paradigm in four normal-hearing, human subjects. The CAP was recorded using a wick electrode placed on the tympanic membrane. The effects of a 4000-Hz, 97-dB SPL conditioning stimulus on CAP amplitude in response to a 4000-Hz probe were measured as a function of conditioner-probe interval for three probe levels. The normalized probe response amplitude was completely recovered to the control values at an average conditioner-probe interval of 1359 ms, similar to that observed

The ABR Delta V technique involves measuring the difference in latency of the wave V click-evoked ABR in the presence of ipsilateral high-pass noise filtered at 1.42 kHz and at 5.68 kHz. It has been reported that a small latency difference between the two conditions is suggestive of Ménière's disease. The aim of this study was to establish normative data for two commercially available systems. The latency differences obtained in the present study are considerably smaller than those previously reported in the literature. Other problems, including difficulty in identifying wave V in the masked c

Forward and backward masking of contour by light was investigated with stimulus onset asynchronies from 20 to 180 ms in a group of 22 schizophrenic patients and 22 matched normal controls. Individuals with schizophrenia were selected using American Psychiatric Association (1987) criteria and were also assessed using the Andreasen scales for the presence of positive and negative symptoms (N.C. Andreasen, 1981, 1983). The Andreasen scales were used to divide schizophrenic patients into 2 subgroups (positive and negative symptoms). Positive-symptom schizophrenic patients showed no differences in

This study sought to differentiate between the effect of stimulus bandwidth and the effect of number of activated auditory channels on gap detection in narrow bands of noise. The aim was to clarify the role of across-frequency analysis in temporal processing. Experiment 1 established that when total noise bandwidth is held constant at 100 Hz, gap detection improves as stimulus energy is distributed to both lower and higher frequencies. Experiment 2a showed that the effect was smaller, or was absent, when the cumulative stimulus bandwidth was increased from 100 to 200 Hz. Experiment 2b confirme

In 8 healthy probands, 6 patients with functional voice disorders, 3 singers and 3 deaf patients we studied the regulation of the voice parameters amplitude and fundamental frequency at the beginning of phonation. Analyses were performed under the following conditions: (1) normal conditions; (2) after troubling pharyngeal and/or glottic mucosal receptors by topical anaesthesia; (3) in the case of normal hearing during disturbance of the audiophonatory feedback mechanism by binaural masking, and (4) with a combination of the latter two situations. The results are discussed.

A series of demonstrations were created where the perceived depth of targets was controlled by stereoscopic disparity. A closer object (a cloud) was made to jump back and forth horizontally, partially occluding a farther object (a full moon). The more distant moon appeared stationary even though the unoccluded portion of it, a crescent, changed position. Reversal of the relative depth of the moon and cloud gave a totally different percept: the crescent appeared to flip back and forth in the front depth plane. Thus, the otherwise-robust apparent motion of the moon crescents was completely aboli

Most listening environments contain some noise which is mixed up with the speech. The effects of noise on speech perception depend on the parameters of the noise (long term spectrum, fluctuations of the intensity in time and average intensity relative to the intensity of speech) and on the speech material (sentences, monosyllables, CV-, CVC-, VC-syllables). The most effective at masking are noises with spectra similar to the speech spectrum, such as the speech simulating noise (CCITT-noise) or cocktail-party-noise. The cocktail-party situation is judged to be a difficult communication situatio
