Discrepancy between the terms of clinical observation and normalization of gastric functions was established on the basis of a time-course study of gastric secretory function in 189 diphylobothriasis patients examined before the treatment and 1-2, 5-6, 10-12 months after it. Recovery of the secretory function took less than 5-6 months in people recovered from short-term invasion (less than a year), while in patients recovered from long-term invasion (lasting more than a year) it took 10-12 months, and reduced secretory activity in the latter group was still observed in many cases 10-12 months

Periodicity of repetitive linear enamel hypoplasia (rLEH) in apes from high latitudes with single wet and dry seasons annually has not been described. We reconstruct periodicity and duration of rLEH in canine teeth from three recently deceased chimpanzees from Fongoli, Senegal with a marked seven-month dry season. High-resolution dental molds were taken in the field for magnified imaging with digital microscopy. Photomontages allowed counting of perikymata between episodes of rLEH for reconstruction of periodicity and duration of physiological stress. Where rLEH spans the imbricational enamel,…

This article will review the definitions and diagnoses of periodic limb movements of sleep and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) in children. This article will highlight the challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of children with PLMD. The nuances between this diagnosis and that of other sleep-related movement disorders covered in this issue will be explored. Treatment options as well as comorbid conditions will also be discussed.

UNLABELLED: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism characterized by episodes of muscle weakness and hypokalemia. Patients may present with a sudden onset of muscle weakness. Though hyperthyroidism occurs more commonly in females, TPP typically occurs in young males in their third decade.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 32-year-old male who presented to the emergency room with a sudden onset of weakness in bilateral upper and lower limbs, which progressed to complete paralysis in an hour. A provisional diagnosis of hypokalemic periodic paralysis wa

Static stretching (SS) can increase joint range of motion (ROM), due to neural, morphological, and physio-psychological factors. Periodized training programs (PD) (e. g., strength, power) are adopted to induce greater adaptations while avoiding overtraining. However, the effectiveness of periodized stretch training adaptations are unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the effects of periodized and non-periodized (NP) stretching programs on flexibility, hamstrings stiffness and muscle performance. Sixteen gymnasts were allocated to either periodized or non-periodized SS

Analyzing the digital characteristics (chaotic and spectral features) of fetal and pregnant woman's heart period signal (HPS) can assess the autonomic nervous system function. Extracting and analyzing HPS of fetal and pregnant woman in perinatal period were realized by using the method of visual programming. The subjects were in supine position. Electrocardiography-signal (ECS) from the leads placed at symphysis pubic bone to inferior border of abdominal wall was acquired. ECS was preprocessed by wavelet filter. The sophisticated technique developed by our laboratory was used to analyze the di

Although the carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been used in the treatment of the primary periodic paralyses (PPs), their efficacy has not been demonstrated in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. Therefore, we tested the efficacy of dichlorphenamide (DCP; Daranide), a potent carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, in the treatment of episodic weakness in the primary PPs. We performed two multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trials, one involving 42 subjects with hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) and the other involving 31 subjects with potassium-sensitive period

A 24-year-old man with sporadic hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HPP) presented with moderate excessive daytime sleepiness and transitory episodes of weakness which occurred during and after sleep. Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) demonstrated the presence of five sleep onset REM periods (SOREMPs) and a sleep latency of five minutes. Treatment with a diuretic which decreases serum potassium resolved all the clinical symtomps and a new MSLT showed the absence of SOREMPs and a sleep latency of 13.5 minutes. To our knowledge, the patient herein reported is the first case that associates sleep a

INTRODUCTION: Periodized rehabilitation for tendinopathies integrates principles of athletic training into structured protocols to optimize tendon healing and functional recovery minimizing recurrence. This review explores the role of concurrent and phasic periodization strategies in tendon rehabilitation, focusing on optimizing strength, power, and neuromuscular control.
AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Early phases prioritize pain management and load capacity through prolonged isometric contractions, to improve neuromuscular engagement without exacerbating symptoms. Heavy, slow resistance exercises, cen

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is an uncommon disorder characterized by hypokalaemia, thyrotoxicosis and paralysis, most commonly seen in South Asian males. Aim of our case series is to highlight the significance of this reversible cause of patients presenting with neuromuscular paralysis. We present case series of 1 Asian and three Caucasian patients with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis who came with neuromuscular weakness secondary to thyrotoxicosis. All made a swift and uneventful recovery with no recurrence. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is an infrequent condition having recurrent episo

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by recurrent attacks of skeletal muscle weakness with associated hypokalemia which is precipitated by stress, cold, carbohydrate load, infection, glucose infusion, hypothermia, metabolic alkalosis, anesthesia, and steroids. We encountered one such incidence of prolonged recovery after general anesthesia, which on further evaluation revealed a case of hypokalemic paralysis. The key to successful management of such a patient was vigilant pre-operative evaluation, perioperative monitoring, and aggressive treatment of hypokale

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Continued interest in neonatal hypertension has led to generation of new data on normal blood pressure (BP) values in neonates, identification of new causes of hypertension in the neonatal period, and improved insights into therapy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Normal BP in neonates depends on a variety of factors, including gestational age, postnatal age, and birth weight, and may be influenced by other antenatal conditions. The incidence of neonatal hypertension is low, and it is most often seen in infants with concurrent conditions such as chronic lung disease (CLD) or renal disease
