Effects of penicillin and erythromycin on the clinical parameters of the periodontium.

The clinical effects of systemic penicillin and erythromycin on the periodontium were investigated. There are only a few studies of the effects of these antibiotics on clinical periodontal parameters. Of the 72 subjects in the study, 24 belonged to the penicillin group, 21 to the erythromycin group and 27 to the control group. Plaque and gingival indices, tooth mobility, and probing depths of gingival pockets were recorded before the drug treatment. Radiographs were taken. Both antibiotics decreased plaque, and erythromycin also decreased gingivitis. In the penicillin group 10 of the 24 patien

Potential role of TP63 in apical periodontitis development.

AIM: To investigate the expression of TP63 in apical periodontitis (AP) tissues and the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TP63 gene with AP using a case-control dataset. METHODOLOGY: Expression of TP63 in human AP lesions (apical abscess, radicular cyst, periapical granuloma) was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. A case-control association study was performed to assess the association of TP63 polymorphisms in individuals having AP with or without associated pain. Cases were defined as subjects with deep caries and AP (n = 151) and subjects with symptomatic apica

Etiological findings in endodontic-periodontal infections.

The endodontium and periodontium are closely related and disease of one may lead to secondary disease in the other. The differential diagnosis of endodontic and periodontal disease is of vital importance, so that the appropriate treatment can be done. Microorganisms play a primary role in endodontic and periodontal infections. The magnitude of the host response will be directly proportional to the virulence and the number of microbial cells present. Tissue damage caused by bacteria is mediated by either direct or indirect mechanisms. Direct harmful effects caused by bacteria involve their prod

[Pyogenic infections of the jaws and adjacent soft parts - retrospective analysis of 9,069 patients treated on an outpatient basis between 1969 and 1978 at the Clinic of Stomatology, University of Halle/Saale (author's transl)].

Of 162.338 patients who between 1969 and 1978 received treatment at the Clinic of Stomatology, University of Halle-an-der-Saale, 9.069 (or 5.6 percent) were treated on an outpatient basis after having been diagnosed as having actinomycosis, osteomyelitis, lymphadenitis, difficult dentition, and nonspecific pyogenic soft-part infections (abscesses or infiltrates). A retrospective analysis by electronic data processing of case histories provided valuable information about morbidity, disposition, cause, localization, and the tendency for dental surgeons to refer certain cases to specialty clinics

[Odontogenic brain abscess. 2 case reports].

The odontogen brain abscess is a relatively rare, but very serious complication of an infection of the teeth. Frequently the bacteria found by aspiration of the brain abscess are the only indication of a dental focus. The diagnostic problems in confirming a covert dental infection as the cause of the brain abscess are illustrated.

Odontogenic Infections: A 1-year Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence, demographic patterns and management of odontogenic infections in patients undergoing treatment in an outpatient dental emergency service of a university hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study of the year 2012, all patients suffering from odontogenic infections were included. Demographic data, diagnosis and the conducted treatment were analyzed. Odontogenic infections were defined as pulpitis, apical and marginal periodontitis, abscesses and pericoronitis. RESULTS: A total of 2,058 out of 4,209 emergency p

Multiple Deep-seated Dentofacial Abscesses Caused by Multidrug-resistant Viridans Group Streptococci.

Odontogenic infections, generally caused by dental caries and periodontal disease, can result in fatal illness. We herein report a 71-year-old Japanese woman with type 2 diabetes and hemodialysis who suffered from multiple dentofacial abscesses mainly caused by multidrug-resistant Streptococcus oralis. She complained of pain and swelling of her face, with an extraoral fistula from the left cheek. Following 3 surgical debridement procedures and partial mandibulectomy, in addition to 12 weeks of antimicrobial therapy, the multiple dentofacial abscesses were ameliorated. A combination of surgical

[Solitary actinomycotic brain abscess: case report].

Actinomycotic brain abscess is a rare condition with uncertain clinical features. Here we report the case of a 66-year-old immune-competent woman with an actinomycotic brain abscess who presented with sensory aphasia and mild right hemiparesis. She had no febrile episode or headache. Moreover, she did not have any periodontal or oto-rhino-laryngological disease, and the results of laboratory tests were normal. A computed tomography scan showed an irregular, low-density area in the left parietal lobe. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging showed low-signal intensity in a T1 weighted image, high

[Hydrogen peroxide and compound chlorhexidine gargle induced anaphylactic shock: a case report and literature review].

Severe allergic reactions to hydrogen peroxide solution and compound chlorhexidine gargle are rare, and most medical professionals have limited understanding of such cases. This article reports a case of anaphylactic shock in a patient with a periodontal abscess following oral flushing with hydrogen peroxide and compound chlorhexidine gargle. Drawing on domestic and international literature, it provides a reference for the emergency management of serious adverse reactions caused by these agents.

Purulent Pericarditis Caused by Polymicrobial Periodontal Pathogens (Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis): A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Purulent pericarditis is a rare, life-threatening infection, most commonly caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. We report an exceptional case of hematogenously disseminated infection probably originating from the oral cavity, highlighting a novel pathogen profile. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 66-year-old male with no history of periodontal disease or oral procedures presented with purulent pericarditis and a concomitant subphrenic abscess. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of pericardial fluid revealed a polymicrobial infection with three periodontal pat

Atypical Presentation of Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Total Knee Arthroplasty due to Parvimonas micra.

There is limited literature reporting the oral pathogen Parvimonas micra as the causative organism of periprosthetic joint infection. Previous reports demonstrate septic arthritis in native or prosthetic joints due to P. micra in elderly or immunocompromised patients associated with tooth abscess and periodontal disease. Our case report is unique because it describes a healthy individual with recurrent gingivitis developing periprosthetic joint infection after total knee arthroplasty as the result of isolated P. micra. Her clinical symptom presented early and manifested as progressive stiffnes

Parameter on acute periodontal diseases. American Academy of Periodontology.

The American Academy of Periodontology has developed the following parameter on the treatment of acute periodontal diseases. Patients should be informed about the disease process, therapeutic alternatives, potential complications, expected results, and their responsibility in treatment. Consequences of no treatment should be explained. Failure to treat acute periodontal diseases appropriately can result in progressive loss of periodontal supporting tissues, an adverse change in prognosis, and could result in tooth loss. Given this information, patients should then be able to make informed deci

Fatal Orbital Cellulitis With Intracranial Abscess: A Case Report.

Orbital cellulitis is a sight- and life-threatening condition. Prompt diagnosis and immediate intervention are required. We report a case of fatal odontogenic orbital cellulitis complicated with intracranial abscesses in a 55-year-old gentleman. The patient presented with painful swelling of the left eye associated with reduced eye movement, blurry vision, and a headache. There was generalized periodontitis. Initial imaging was suggestive of left eye orbital cellulitis with intracranial abscess, and intensive systemic antibiotic therapy was initiated. After six weeks of antibiotic therapy, the
