Reducing dietary loading decreases mouse temporomandibular joint degradation induced by anterior crossbite prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary loading has been reported to have an effect on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) remodeling via periodontal-muscular reflex. We therefore examined whether reducing dietary loading decreased TMJ degradation induced by the unilateral anterior crossbite prosthesis as we recently reported. METHODS: Forty 6-week-old female C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into two experimental and two control groups. One experimental and one control group received small-size diet and the other two groups received large-size diet. Unilateral anterior crossbite prosthesis was created in the two exp

Implant placement immediately after the lateral approach of the trap door window procedure to create a maxillary sinus lift without bone grafting: a 2-year retrospective evaluation of 47 implants in 33 patients.

PURPOSE: The present study was undertaken to retrospectively evaluate the status of implants in patients subjected to a maxillary sinus lift and immediate implant placement without bone grafting. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-five implants were placed in 47 patients from 2000 to 2006. Lateral approach for the trap-door, open-window method for sinus lifting without placement of either autogenous bone grafts or allogeneic bone substitute was carried out. A 5-mm of the bone level was required in the alveolar ridge for all. All implants were placed synchronously with sinus lifting procedure. Pati

Fiber-reinforced fixed dental prosthesis to replace missing anterior teeth: case reports.

The direct fiber-reinforced fixed dental prosthesis (FRFDP) is a minimally invasive approach to replacing missing anterior teeth, offering good survival rates and sound mechanical properties. This report describes the placement and 12-month follow-up results of FRFDPs used to replace missing anterior teeth in 2 patients. In the first case, the extraction of the maxillary right central incisor was related to trauma. In the second case, severe periodontal disease necessitated the extraction of the mandibular left central incisor. Based on the biological and financial considerations of the patien

Success or failure of dental implants? A literature review with treatment considerations.

This study reviews the literature concerning the success or failure of dental implants and provides the general dentist with information to decide whether to recommend dental implant therapy to a patient. The authors conducted an extensive literature search for articles relating to dental implant failure. Metaanalyses and multi-center studies were predominant in the selection. Predictors of dental implant success or failure were gleaned from various articles and presented in the form of text and tables. The main predictors for implant success are the quantity and quality of bone, the patient's

Naso-orbicular tissue necrosis by Streptococcus parasanguis in a patient with Fanconi anemia: clinical and laboratory aspects.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by pancytopenia and progressive hypoplasia of the bone marrow. A 23-year-old woman with FA showed severe pancytopenia and developed an abscess on the infraorbicular region on the right side of the face that progressed to phlegmon and caused tissue necrosis of the nostrils, nasal septum, nasal fossa, and posterior orbital region. Laboratory examination showed Streptococcus parasanguis as the etiologic agent of the phlegmon. Supportive treatment was recommended due to donor incompatibility for bone marrow transplant. The i

Digital workflow for dual full-arch rehabilitation using guided surgery: Two-year follow-up case report.

BACKGROUND: A digital guided surgery system (DSD Clic-Guide, Digital Smile Design) is a digital rehabilitation planning system recommended in the rehabilitation of fully edentulous jaws, which orients implant placement procedures, immediate provisional loading, and final prosthesis based on an ideal facially generated three-dimensional design. This system increases the level of predictability of procedures in complex clinical cases and consists of a sequence of surgical guides used during procedures that may include teeth extractions, osteotomies, implant placements, and immediate prosthesis i

The implant quality scale: a clinical assessment of the health--disease continuum.

Implant success is as difficult to describe as the success criteria required for a tooth. A range from health to disease exists in both conditions. The primary criteria for assessing implant quality are pain and mobility. The presence of either one greatly compromises the implant, and removal is usually indicated. Probing depths may be related to the presence of local disease or pre-existing tissue thickness before the implant was inserted. An increasing probing depth is more diagnostic and signifies bone loss, gingival hyperplasia or hypertrophy. Bone loss is usually evaluated best with probi

Re-appraisal of dental clearance protocol before anti-resorptive agents for osteoporosis using the modified Delphi technique.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing anti-resorptive agent (ARA) therapy are at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Although existing guidelines encourage dental clearance prior to the initiation of ARA therapy, details on risk-appropriate treatment planning are insufficient. METHODS: This mixed-method study established a 13-person multidisciplinary expert panel to generate consensus statements through a modified Delphi process. Seven domains and 29 statements were identified through a comprehensive literature review and inputs from the expert panel. After two rounds of an

An interdisciplinary treatment approach combining orthodontic forced eruption with immediate implant placement to achieve a satisfactory treatment outcome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease often results in severely bony defects around the teeth and leads to eventual extraction. Remaining bone morphology often compromises ideally restoration-driven positions and deteriorates the success rates for dental implants. PURPOSE: The present investigation illustrates the clinical outcome of immediately installing an implant following orthodontic forced eruption and atraumatic extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subject of this study is a 40-year-old Asian female with a right mandibular first molar that had a deep probing depth on the mesial side and mo

QuadroJig: A Reverse-Engineering Analog Protocol for Prosthetic- Periodontal Co-Acquisition in Full-Arch Implant Rehabilitation.

Contemporary full-arch implant rehabilitation increasingly incorporates digital workflows and staged prototyping. However, delayed-loading cases continue to require a structured method for transferring prosthetic and biologic information during the transition from removable to fixed prostheses. This technique report introduces the QuadroJig protocol, an analog-driven, transdisciplinary workflow that enables simultaneous acquisition of implant position, occlusal relationships, esthetic parameters, and peri-implant soft-tissue dimensions. A stabilized intraoral construct derived from a flangeles

Plaque-induced marginal tissue reactions of osseointegrated oral implants: a review of the literature.

An intimate contact between bone and titanium implants was first demonstrated in 1969, and since then the bone-implant interface of osseointegrated implants has been investigated extensively. However, investigations of the marginal tissues and the microflora associated with osseointegrated implants have almost exclusively been carried out over the last decade. This review covers the clinical, radiographic, histologic, and microbiologic studies of marginal tissues of osseointegrated oral implants. In general, successfully osseointegrated implants exhibit low amounts of plaque concomitant with t
