Abdominal tuberculosis is still a medical problem in developing countries. The clinical presentation of tuberculous (TB) peritonitis may be similar to that of peritoneal carcinomatosis. Therefore, its diagnosis is rather difficult only with laboratory investigations. Ascitic fluid adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity has been proposed as a useful diagnostic test in tuberculous peritonitis, as many studies reported high ADA levels in TB peritonitis. On the other hand, ADA activity is usually lower in peritoneal carcinomatosis and malignant ascites. This study described a patient with non-Hodgkin

To define the extent and nature of mycobacterial infection in patients on an adult dialysis unit whose catchment population contains a large proportion of non-Caucasian subjects, a retrospective survey of all new patients accepted onto our maintenance dialysis programme between January 1987 and December 1989 was carried out. Twenty-six Asian, 13 Afro-Caribbean, two Oriental and 170 Caucasian patients were accepted onto the dialysis programme in the three-year recruitment period. Eight of the 26 Asian patients, but none of the others, had developed mycobacterial infection by the end of December

BACKGROUND: The clinical syndrome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) peritoneal dialysis (PD) peritonitis is poorly understood. Whether local tuberculosis (TB) patterns modify the clinical syndrome, and what factors associate with poor outcomes is also unknown.
METHODS: A scoping review identified published cases of TB PD peritonitis. Cases from low- and high-TB burden areas were compared, and cases that did or did not suffer a poor clinical outcome were compared.
RESULTS: There were 216 cases identified. Demographics, presentation, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes were describ

Tuberculosis constitutes an important health problem, affecting one third of the world's population. The pulmonary localization is the most frequent one, being rare the peritoneal presentation. Clinical manifestations are non-specific so the diagnosis requires a high level of suspicion. The case of a 13-year-old teenager hospitalized for peritoneal tuberculosis is reported. The objective is to describe a rare form of extra-pulmonary manifestation of M. tuberculosis infection in the pediatric age and to sensitize the medical community, in the current epidemiological context, to the reemergence

Peritoneal tuberculosis (PTB) is an uncommon extrapulmonary infection mimickng primary peritoneal cancer (PPC). We retrospectively included 23 women with PTB and 47 women with PPC treated in a medical center to study the clinical and radiological features that differentiate PTB from PPC. Body temperature above 38 °C was a unique feature of PTB (34.7% versus 0%, p < 0.001). Body Mass Index (BMI) was lower (21.9 ± 3.7 versus 25.2 ± 4.1, p = 0.003), white blood cell (WBC) count was lower (5179.6 ± 1502.2 versus 7716.2 ± 2741.8, p < 0.001), and CA-125 level was lower (508.0 ± 266.1 versus 2130.1 ±

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare malignant tumor with peritoneal thickening. Tuberculous peritonitis also shows peritoneal thickening, so differentiating between the two is important but difficult if latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is present. We herein report a patient with MPM and LTBI. A 79-year-old man was diagnosed with peritoneal thickening on computed tomography. Interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) results were positive, suggesting tuberculous peritonitis. He underwent a laparoscopic omental biopsy and was diagnosed with MPM, which can occur together with LTBI. I

Differential diagnosis between tuberculous peritonitis and peritonitis carcinomatosis is extremely difficult in patients with ascites, peritoneal implants and elevated CA 125 level. A 16-year-old girl presented with abdominal distention, intermittent fever and weight loss. Physical examination and radiologic studies revealed massive ascites, generalized peritoneal thickening and slightly enlarged right ovary with a cystic mass and left pleural effusion. Serum CA 125 was 939 U/L (normal range: 0-35 U/L) and other tumor markers including alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and beta-human chorionic gonadotro

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) has been an effective treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) in patients on CAPD is a perilous condition. A 28-years-old female presented to the emergency unit with a chief complaint of intermittent abdominal pain and fever. The patient had a history of renal failure and CAPD was inserted. CAPD fluid analysis revealed leukocytes of +3/visual field and positive for acid-fast bacilli. The patient was given antituberculous agents, CAPD removal, and AV shunt installment for the subsequent HD access. A high index

Introduction: Peritoneal tuberculosis is a common type of abdominal tuberculosis. The most commonly used classification divides peritoneal tuberculosis into wet-ascitic type, dry-plastic type, and fixed-fibrotic type. Areas covered: We performed a systematic literature search on the definitions of existing classification of peritoneal tuberculosis. The literature search identified confusion in the classification of peritoneal tuberculosis. The classification system also fails to classify some patterns of peritoneal tuberculosis like an abdominal cocoon and a substantial overlap in various cate

Peritoneal tuberculosis is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis. Considering the diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis in a low prevalence setting can be vital for further clinical management in selected patients. In a young male with migration background, presenting with generalised abdominal pain, computed tomography revealed ascites, omental and peritoneal thickening and enlarged mesentery lymph nodes. Computed tomography also revealed a distal ureteral calculus at the right vesico-ureteral junction. Diagnostic laparoscopy showed a nodular degeneration of the visceral and pari

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is particularly observed after the start of therapy for pathogenic antigens in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Although tuberculosis (TB)-associated IRIS is the most common form, its presentation as a primary feature of acute peritonitis is extraordinarily rare. We report a 43-year-old man diagnosed with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and pulmonary TB coinfection. His symptoms, sputum quantity, and chest radiologic appearance improved markedly after 3 wee

Two cases of prolonged fever are reported. In the first case a tuberculous abscess of the liver was considered after an ultrasonic examination of the periphery of an hepatic calcification discovered many years ago; a right hepatectomy confirmed the diagnosis. The second patient was treated twenty years ago for a tuberculous exsudative peritonitis. The pelvic examination showed a myoma. A computed body tomogram disclosed a picture of pyometritis. This was confirmed by laparotomy showing tuberculous salpingitis and pyometritis by praevia myoma.
