Dysfunction of the common peroneal nerve is the most common mononeuropathy in the lower limb and a source of significant disability for patients. The nerve can be damaged at various levels for various reasons (direct or indirect trauma, extrinsic compression, anatomical variant, endocrine, rheumatological, or neurological disease). Clinical evidence of foot drop with steppage gait is very typical. Conservative treatment should be considered as a first step (avoidance of the contributing factors, functional rehabilitation, foot drop brace ± injection). If properly conducted conservative treatme

This review summaries the knowledge of the treatment of peroneal nerve palsy. Isolated peroneal nerve palsy is often seen after fracture of the knee or knee dislocation. In cases with chronic peroneal nerve palsy and foot drop, tendon transfer of the posterior tibial muscle tendon to the dorsum of the foot is a possibility to be considered. This procedure is indicated for isolated peroneal nerve palsy with good ankle mobility, good strength of the posterior tibial muscle and no chance of spontaneous remission.

Suspension bed are often used to treat and nurse the wounds of burn patients in clinic. Because of the suspension force, the patients' activities are limited, and they stay in bed for a long time, which is very easy to cause foot drop, affecting the recovery of the patients. Aiming at this problem, we designed and made a foot drop prevention baffle made of stainless steel, which could withstand the buoyancy of the suspension bed, adjust the feet forwardly and backwardly, to the left and right according to the height of the patients and the distance of the feet to be separated, and keep the foo

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a hereditary generalized connective tissue disorder characterized by skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility and tissue fragility. Peripheral neuropathy is described sporadically. Although the exact mechanism of the neuropathy is not well-known, excessive stretch and abnormal connective tissue support are the suggested causative agents. To our knowledge, total peroneal nerve palsy occurring in conjunction with a growth spurt has not previously been described. We describe the case of a young male patient, who developed a total unilateral peroneal palsy durin

OBJECTIVE: Teriflunomide is an oral medication approved for the treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis. The primary effect of teriflunomide is to reduce de novo pyrimidine synthesis by inhibiting mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, thereby causing cell-cycle arrest. We aimed to investigate the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy, a rare side effect of teriflunomide, in patients receiving teriflunomide.
METHODS: Multiple sclerosis patients receiving teriflunomide (n=42) or other disease modifying therapies (n=18) and healthy controls (n=25) were enrolled in this cross-sectional

We describe the case of a 41-year-old Asian man who was initially given a diagnosis of peroneal neuropathy but who later received a diagnosis of tenosynovitis of extensor digitorum longus (EDL). The patient initially presented with left lateral ankle numbness, pain, and decreased range of dorsiflexion after an 8-km walk. Peroneal neuropathy was first diagnosed on the basis of reduced compound muscle action potential (CMAP). Conversely, ankle ultrasound revealed normal peroneal nerve but considerable EDL tenosynovitis. Ultrasound-guided injection of triamcinolone and lidocaine into the tendon s

Background Anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome (ATTS) is an uncommon entrapment neuropathy which occurs due to the compression of deep peroneal nerve under the inferior extensor retinaculum at the ankle. We observed a frequent occurrence of this syndrome in toddy palm tappers and hence, planned to study the association between the two. Materials and Methods We studied the prevalence of isolated deep peroneal neuropathy at the ankle among the asymptomatic toddy tappers enrolled over a period of 3 months. Results In our case series, 81% (17/21) of the study participants had ATTS of which 43% (

Leprosy or Hansen's disease is a chronic infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium leprae. Nerve injury is a central feature of the pathogenesis of leprosy that results in autonomic, sensory and motor neuropathy. One of the most common secondary disabilities caused by Hansen's disease is the drop foot and it is found in 2% to 5% of newly-diagnosed leprosy patients. Unlike the clinical picture of traumatic injury of the common peroneal nerve where both of its branches (the deep peroneal nerve and the superficial peroneal nerve) are involved, in leprosy there is the possibility of isolated

Peroneal neuropathy and polyneuropathy are displayed with a variable percentage in subjects affected by eating disorders and in particular by anorexia nervosa. Actually, little is known on features of these complications during the paediatric age. We describe the case of a female adolescent with right peroneal palsy and subclinical polyneuropathy associated with anorexia nervosa (AN). We review previous research about peroneal mononeuropathy and polyneuropathy associated with AN, and we develop a diagnostic and therapeutic protocol to help clinicians recognize and treat these disorders.

Peroneal palsy is compression neuropathy of the peroneal nerve, which presents with foot drop. Patients with unilateral peroneal nerve palsy are frequently encountered in clinical practice. Although bilateral peroneal nerve palsy is rare, bilateral foot drop due to peroneal nerve palsy is much less common. The main complaint is often walking difficulty due to weakened ankle dorsiflexor muscles. Medical history and physical examination are always a part of the diagnosis, and the most useful method is electroneuromyography to evaluate the degree of the lesion. In this report, we present a 52-yea

Rare distal compressions of lower limb nerves include tarsal tunnel syndrome, entrapment of the first branch of the lateral plantar and medial calcaneal nerves, interdigital neuroma, compression of the deep peroneal nerve on the dorsum of the foot, entrapment of the superficial peroneal and sural nerves. Nerve conduction and electromyographic studies are essential to evaluate these peripheral nerve injuries in order to differentiate focal lower extremity nerve entrapments from ischemic mononeuropathies, lumbar radiculopathies or plexopathies, and generalized peripheral neuropathies. This revie

Motor nerve biopsies are performed in the workup of neuropathies of unknown origin when motor neuron disease is suspected. Biopsy of a motor branch of the superficial peroneal nerve innervating the peroneus longus muscle has been described as a convenient alternative to other commonly biopsied motor nerves. To date, neuromonitoring techniques have not been described for this procedure. We describe the surgical neurophysiology techniques necessary for preservation of motor function and associated data during muscle biopsy of a motor branch of the superficial peroneal nerve innervating the peron

Family physicians use anesthesia to provide diagnostic and procedural analgesia for conditions such as neuropathies, fracture reduction, foreign body removals, and complex wound management. Local infiltration of anesthetics is commonly used in this setting because of the ease of use, safety, and effectiveness of the procedure. Nerve blocks are a specific regional anesthesia technique that blocks nerve function distal to the injection site. An understanding of the sensory distribution of the peripheral nervous system is essential in determining the safest and most effective nerve block for the

CASE: This case report describes an 18-year-old man with a complete common peroneal nerve motor palsy after sustaining a multiligamentous knee injury while jumping on a trampoline. He underwent anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, and posterolateral corner reconstruction with neurolysis of the peroneal nerve. Despite poor initial electromyography findings, he began showing evidence of spontaneous recovery of the peroneal nerve 13 months postinjury.
CONCLUSION: Late spontaneous recovery of common peroneal nerve function is possible after a multiligamentous knee injury with

Peripheral nerve injuries due to mass effect from bony lesions can occur when the nerve exists in an anatomically constrained location, such as the common peroneal nerve at the fibular head which passes into the tight fascia of the lateral leg compartment. We report a case of a pediatric patient who developed a common peroneal nerve palsy secondary to an osteochondroma of the fibular head and describe the clinical evaluation, radiographic findings, and surgical approach. Rapid diagnosis and nerve decompression after the onset of symptoms restored full motor function at the 8-month postoperativ
