Posttraumatic stress symptoms, posttraumatic growth, and personality factors: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: After experiencing a traumatic event, two possible outcomes are experiencing positive changes, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG), and/or experiencing distress in the form of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). These constructs are not mutually exclusive; those who experience PTSS may concurrently or at a later date likewise undergo PTG. Pretrauma factors, such as personality as measured by the Big Five Inventory (BFI), can interact with both PTSS and PTG. METHODS: The present study utilized Network theory to examine the interactions between PTSS, PTG, and personality in 1310 pa

Measuring Behavioral Inhibition and Behavioral Activation in Older Adults: Construct Validity of the Dutch BIS/BAS Scales.

Research on the validity of the behavioral inhibition system/behavioral approach system (BIS/BAS) scales focused on adolescent, student and adult populations. This study is the first to examine the psychometric properties of the BIS/BAS scales in a community (n = 368) and a clinical sample (n = 160) of older adults. Exploratory structural equation modelling with target rotation to the Carver and White model supported the construct validity of the BIS/BAS scales. Internal consistencies of the scales were generally satisfactory. Female participants scored higher on BIS and BAS-Reward Responsiven

Spiritual Intelligence: A Scoping Review with Concept Analysis on the Key to Spiritual Care.

This study explores the concept of spiritual intelligence from an evolutionary perspective, providing a comprehensive and updated definition. A concept analysis was conducted following Rodgers' Evolutionary Method, supported by a scoping review in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Studies explicitly addressing spiritual intelligence, regardless of population, setting, or discipline, were included across quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and review designs. Four databases-PsycINFO, PubMed Central, Scopus, and Web of Science-were searched for publications up to 15

The influence of therapist actions, strategies and qualities on change processes in psychological therapies for eating disorders: grounded theory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Therapist actions, qualities and strategies are a potentially modifiable factor influencing outcome in psychological therapies for eating disorders. This study aims to hear the perspectives of those with lived experience, to identify therapist actions and behaviours which were helpful or unhelpful in change and recovery, and to construct a theory of the processes by which these therapist actions might impact on recovery. METHODS: Eighteen participants who had undergone various psychological therapies for EDs took part in semi-structured interviews. They described helpful and unhel

Within-person Changes in Co-rumination and Rumination in Adolescence: Examining Heterogeneity and the Moderating Roles of Gender and Time.

Although previous work has consistently identified positive associations between co-rumination and rumination during adolescence, little to no research has examined how this relationship operates on the person-specific level. The current study aimed to extend current developmental theories of co-rumination and rumination by examining within-person associations between these constructs. Survey data was collected from 1502 adolescents (Mage = 13.20; 52% girls; 52% non-Hispanic White) every six-months across the span of 3.5 years. The results showed that at time-points when adolescents reported c

A Psychometric Evaluation of the DSM-IV Criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder: Dimensionality, Local Reliability, and Differential Item Functioning Across Gender.

This study aims at evaluating the psychometric properties of the antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) criteria in a large sample of patients, most of whom had one or more personality disorders (PD). PD diagnoses were assessed by experienced clinicians using the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, Axis II PDs. Analyses were performed within an item response theory framework. Results of the analyses indicated that ASPD is a unidimensional construct that can be measured reliably at the upper range of the latent trait scale. Diffe

A Mixed-Methods Approach to Develop a Combined Model of U.S. College Student Alcohol-Associated Condomless Sex.

Unhealthy alcohol use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are significant public health concerns for US college students. Because alcohol use and condomless sex often co-occur in this population, alcohol-associated condomless sex has been identified as a behavioral intervention target. Existing theoretical frameworks have not garnered sufficient empirical support to serve as the foundation for interventions. The primary goal of the current study was to use a mixed-methods approach to develop a model of college student alcohol-associated condomless sex that combines elements from well-es

From Theory to Competence: A Conceptual Review of Humanized Care in Community Nursing in the Ecuadorian Context.

Community nursing in Latin America requires a shift from control-oriented biomedical models toward relational and culturally responsive approaches capable of addressing persistent structural inequalities and intercultural complexity. This review develops the Relate-Capacity-Comfort (RCC) framework. This integrated model synthesizes three foundational nursing theories: Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring, Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, and Katharine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. The framework conceptualizes community nursing as a sequential process comprising relational engageme

Making it transparent: A worked example of articulating programme theory for a digital health application using Intervention Mapping.

OBJECTIVE: Digital health interventions for behaviour change are usually complex interventions, and intervention developers should 'articulate programme theory', that is, they should offer detailed descriptions of individual intervention components and their proposed mechanisms of action. However, such detailed descriptions often remain lacking. The objective of this work was to provide a conceptual case study with an applied example of 'articulating programme theory' for a newly developed digital health intervention. METHODS: Intervention Mapping methodology was applied to arrive at a detail

Management of nursing care in HIV/AIDS from a palliative and hospital perspective.

OBJECTIVES: To understand the meaning attributed by the nurse to the management of nursing care to the person hospitalized due to clinical complications caused by AIDS; to analyze actions related to palliative care; and to construct a theoretical matrix regarding the management of nursing care. METHOD: Qualitative, exploratory research, guided by the Grounded Theory. Seven nurses and ten nursing technicians were interviewed between May and September 2015, in a university hospital, located in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. RESULTS: Five categories that covered the profile of the hospitalized p

Malignant Self-Regard: Overview and Future Directions.

Malignant self-regard (MSR) is a self-representation that encompasses the shared features of depressive personality disorder, masochistic/self-defeating personality disorder, depressive-masochistic personality, and vulnerable narcissism. In this review we begin by describing the construct's historical precursors, which begin in early psychoanalytic/dynamic theory, and then trace its development across iterations of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Special attention is paid to differentiating MSR from vulnerable narcissism. We then consider MSR's place within transdiag

Current interpretations of the I-PACE model of behavioral addictions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model of behavioral addictions is used relatively often as a scientific framework to specify research hypotheses and to interpret empirical findings in behavioral addiction research. There are, however, controversial interpretations in the literature regarding some specific elements of the model, which may require a more precise definition of specific constructs and processes that are central to the I-PACE model. METHODS: This is neither a comprehensive literature review nor a proposal for a new version of the

Segregated in Life and Death: Arnold R. Rich and the Racial Science of Tuberculosis.

Arnold Rich (1893-1968) was an acclaimed pathologist and the first Jewish department chair at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In his landmark text, The Pathogenesis of Tuberculosis, Rich continued to advance the concept of racial susceptibility to tuberculosis a decade after mainstream medicine recognized that environmental factors fueled the disease. While Rich fits into the historical narrative that embedded categories of race facilitated scientific racism, two characteristics unique to Rich help to explain why he persisted. First were the scientific origins of his theories. While raci

Brief report: group social-multimodal intervention for HFASD.

Current study is the second part of a 2-year cognitive-behavioral-ecological (CB-E) intervention for high-functioning (HF) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We examined the utility of a group-centered intervention on children's ability to interact cooperatively with peers during structured and non-structured social situations. Direct (e.g., social problem solving) and indirect (theory of mind; executive function) treatment effects on social cognitive capabilities were also examined. Participants were 26 preadolescent HF children with ASD. Study results demonstrated direct and indir

Preserved function of the fusiform face area in schizophrenia as revealed by fMRI.

Many lines of evidence suggest that individuals with schizophrenia suffer from face processing deficits. However, the specificity of these deficits and the neural dysfunction underlying them remain unclear. To address these questions, we evaluated the functional status of a critical region for face processing, the fusiform face area (FFA), in subjects with schizophrenia. Fourteen schizophrenia patients and 10 healthy control subjects participated in an fMRI experiment to determine the functional status of the FFA by viewing a series of faces and exemplars of other object categories, while comp

Being bad isn't always good: affective context moderates the attention bias toward negative information.

Research has demonstrated that people automatically devote more attention to negative information than to positive information. The authors conducted 3 experiments to test whether this bias is attenuated by a person's affective context. Specifically, the authors primed participants with positive and negative information using traditional (e.g., subliminal semantic priming) and nontraditional (e.g., social interactions) means and measured the amount of attention they allocated to positive and negative information. With both event-related brain potentials (Experiment 1) and the Stroop task (Expe

Contextualizing trauma: using evidence-based treatments in a multicultural community after 9/11.

The mental health community was caught unaware after 9/11 with respect to treatment of survivors of terrorist attacks. Because this form of trauma was quite rare in the U.S., few trauma specialists had extensive experience, or taught regularly on this subject. Since the primary objective of terrorism is the creation of demoralization, fear, and uncertainty in the general population, a focus on mental health from therapeutic and public health perspectives is critically important to successful resolution of the crisis. Surveys after 9/11 showed unequivocally that symptomatology related to the at

Spinal cord trauma in a cat caused by ingestion of a splinter.

The ability to make precise distinctions among related personality constructs helps clarify theory and increases the utility of clinical assessment. In three studies, the authors evaluated the validity of distinctions among four impulsivity-like traits: sensation seeking, lack of planning, lack of persistence, and urgency (acting rashly when distressed). Factor analyses indicated that lack of planning and lack of persistence are two distinct facets of one broader trait, whereas urgency and sensation seeking are both very modestly related to each other and to the planning/persistence measures.

"Through their eyes": Narratives of resilience among adolescents exposed to intimate partner violence in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (CEIPV) is a serious form of developmental trauma with lasting effects on emotional regulation, relational functioning, and identity formation. While much research emphasizes risk and pathology, less is known about how adolescents interpret these early experiences and construct resilience. OBJECTIVE: To explore how adolescents exposed to IPV in early childhood make sense of their experiences and articulate resilience through personal narratives. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Twenty-one adolescents (aged 13-18) residing in the Abha regio
