Development of pump-oxygenator systems and the origins of open-heart surgery: a personal memoir.

Intracardiac surgery requires the use of a pump-oxygenator to maintain life while the heart is taken out of its usual circuit. Open-heart surgery became practical with the introduction of perfusion systems in the early 1950s. Many factors merged at this time to initiate the beginnings of open-heart surgery.

[Questionnaire on the satisfaction of persons with lower-limb amputations towards their prosthesis: development and validation].

The satisfaction of persons with lower-limb amputations towards their prosthesis constitutes a critical factor in the use of the prosthesis. In order to evaluate a person's satisfaction, the SAT-PRO, a self-administrated questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire includes 15 items developed on the basis of the most significant criteria used by the person when selecting a technical aid. These criteria were measured using an ordinal categorical four-level scale. The validation of the SAT-PRO was established from a sample consisting of 61 people with below-knee or above-knee amputations, agin

[Therapeutic patient education for obese adolescents: an opportunity to develop a personalized care plan].

While common childhood obesity is well defined from a somatic perspective, its consequences are manifold, and the outcomes of medical treatment often remain inadequate. Most recent studies point to a polygenic susceptibility to the development of the condition within an obesogenic environment. The only medical treatment option, therefore, is to address this multifactorial environment (diet, sedentary lifestyle, screen time, sleep, emotional state, family and social context, economic situation, etc.) in collaboration with the adolescent and their parents in order to prevent the resulting physic

The Connection Between Personality and the Perception of Social Norms in the Adaptation to the Principles of Sustainable Development.

The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between personality traits of student youth and the perception of social norms regulating adaptation to sustainable development principles. An empirical survey was conducted among 150 third- and fourth-year students of social and humanities specialities at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. The results showed that conscientiousness (M = 4.05; SD = 0.58), openness to experience (M = 3.95; SD = 0.63), and agreeableness (M = 3.87; SD = 0.65) were most strongly associated with the perception of sustainable development norms. Experimental feasibility of personalized functional neuromuscular stimulation stepping patterns developed in silico.

Functional neuromuscular stimulation is a technique for restoring mobility impaired by spinal cord injury, including stepping. Typically, functional neuromuscular stimulation patterns are determined by manually tuning stimulation timing and charge applied to peripheral nerves by modulating constant current pulse amplitude, width, or frequency. Manual tuning is time consuming and suboptimal; we propose an in silico alternative relying on optimal control for developing temporal patterns of stimulation that can be implemented in real-life functional neuromuscular stimulation systems. The function

Insights into early embryonic development - a personal assessment based on 30 years of experience.

The collection of early embryonic stages from the donor animal and their in vitro development through to transfer back into a recipient animal has gained enormous importance both in understanding embryo physiology and in its application for breeding purposes. Whereas not so long ago the focus was on embryo retrieval after superovulation from the donor animal, oocyte collection by follicular puncture followed by in vitro production (IVP) is now the main source of bovine embryos. However, as recent years of intensive research have shown, it appears to be very difficult to reproduce the extreme c

Assessing childhood impact: Virtual and in-person counseling for children's language development challenges.

In recent years, family counseling programs have grown significantly. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a counseling program designed for Late Talkers (LT) or children with Development Language Disorder (DLD) aged 3-6. It also seeks to analyze the differences between its implementation in virtual and in-person settings and to gather the opinions of speech therapists and families about the program. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was employed with two groups, each consisting of 17 children, totaling 34 children: one in an in-person setting and the other in

Factors Contributing to the Development of Neuropsychiatric Manifestations in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS) and is distinguished by neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. It has four categories based on clinical course, with relapsing-remitting being the most common type. MS predominantly manifests with motor and sensory dysfunctions. However, neuropsychiatric manifestations such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are not uncommon. Various factors may contribute to the development of these manifestations; therefore, this study aimed to unravel them. This syst

Patterns of life stress and the development of ruminative brooding in adolescence: A person-centered approach.

Research links life stressors, including acute, chronic, and early life stress, to the development of ruminative brooding. However, singular forms of life stress rarely occur in isolation, as adolescents typically encounter stressors that vary on important dimensions (e.g., types, timings, quantities) across development. The current study employs latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify natural clusters of life stress that, over time, may be differently associated with ruminative brooding. Evaluations of episodic, chronic, and early life stress were conducted with community-recruited mid-adol

Risky driving behavior among individuals with Autism, ADHD, and typically developing persons.

INTRODUCTION: Many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience difficulty with driving, including difficulty with obtaining a driver's license as well as driving safely and efficiently. Such difficulties negatively impact their ability to function independently and participate in daily activities that require driving. ASD and ADHD commonly occur co-morbidly and share many overlapping clinical features. Few studies have directly compared the nature of difficulties in driving safety outcomes between ASD and ADHD. The overar

Development of a highly purified tick-borne encephalitis vaccine : A personal historical account.

Before the advent of a vaccine, infections with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in Austria led to the hospitalization of several hundred and, due to underreporting, possibly more than thousand patients with severe neurological disease every year. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, this country had the highest recorded morbidity of TBE in Europe, but similar endemic risk areas exist in many other European countries as well as Central and Eastern Asia. In this article, I describe my personal recollections of the development of a highly purified TBE vaccine in the late 1970s, to which I contr

Health of Convicted Persons in the Third Generation of the Longitudinal Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development.

Research suggests that convicted persons are more likely than non-convicted persons to suffer poor health. However, few longitudinal studies have investigated associations between health and offending across generations. Using the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development, this article prospectively investigates the relationship between health and offending across generations and between genders. At the average age of 25, third generation convicted males and females reported a higher incidence of serious drug use than non-convicted persons. Convicted males reported a higher incidence of mental

Development of Triboelectroceutical Fabrics for Potential Applications in Self-Sanitizing Personal Protective Equipment.

Attachment of microbial bodies including the corona virus on the surface of personal protective equipment (PPE) is found to be potential threat of spreading infection. Here, we report the development of a triboelectroceutical fabric (TECF) consisting of commonly available materials, namely, nylon and silicone rubber (SR), for the fabrication of protective gloves on the nitrile platform as model wearable PPE. A small triboelectric device (2 cm × 2 cm) consisting of SR and nylon on nitrile can generate more than 20 V transient or 41 μW output power, which is capable of charging a capacitor up to

Using Medical Big Data to Develop Personalized Medicine for Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic, multifactorial ocular surface disorder with multiple etiologies that results in tear film instability. Globally, the prevalence of DED is expected to increase with an aging society and daily use of digital devices. Unfortunately, the medical field is currently unprepared to meet the medical needs of patients with DED. Noninvasive, reliable, and readily reproducible biomarkers have not yet been identified, and the current mainstay treatment for DED relies on symptom alleviation using eye drops with no effective preventative therapies available. Medical big da
