Somatosensory processing in long COVID fatigue and its relations with physiological and psychological factors.

We aimed to quantify somatosensory processing in long COVID and interactions between somatosensory processing, fatigability, fatigue, autonomic function, mood and illness beliefs. Eighty-eight participants (44 long COVID and 44 controls) were invited to complete two testing sessions, where fatigue was induced by either a cognitive or a physical task in a cross-over design; all participants completed at least one session. Baseline questionnaires assessed trait fatigue, autonomic symptoms, mood and illness beliefs. Pre- and post-task measures included somatosensory processing, state fatigue, per

A prospective study of carpal tunnel syndrome: workplace and individual risk factors.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the risk for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) from workplace physical factors, particularly hand activity level and forceful exertion, while taking into account individual factors including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and pre-existing medical conditions. METHODS: Three healthcare and manufacturing workplaces were selected for inclusion on the basis of range of exposure to hand activity level and forceful exertion represented by their jobs. Each study participant's job tasks were observed and evaluated onsite and videotaped for further analysis, including frequency

Is Borg's perceived exertion scale a useful indicator of muscular and cardiovascular load in blue-collar workers with lifting tasks? A cross-sectional workplace study.

PURPOSE: To investigate associations between perceived exertion and objectively assessed muscular and cardiovascular load during a full work … rs with lifting tasks, high neck muscle activity increases the odds for experiencing high perceived physical exertion. Perceived exertion of at least 4 on the BORG CR10 scale appears to be a good indicator that high muscular loading occurs.

Joint associations of occupational standing and occupational exertion with musculoskeletal symptoms in a US national sample.

OBJECTIVE: Observational studies have linked occupational standing or walking to musculoskeletal pain. These prior studies, however, are flawed as few accounted for physical exertion; a potential confounder that accompanies many standing-based occupations. The purpose of this study was to examine the individual and joint associations of occupational standing/walking and exertion with musculoskeletal symptoms. METHODS: Data for this analysis come from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey, a US nationally representative survey. Occupational standing/walking and exertion were assessed by se…

[Effect of oviductus rana on alleviating physical fatigue in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of oviductus rana on the alleviation of physical fatigue in rats and their mechanisms. METHODS: 64 Kunming male rats were divided into 4 groups by random: the control group and 3 oviductus rana groups, 16 mice in each group. Oviductus rana homogenates at 1, 5 and 10 times of dosage used for the adults (6 g/60 kg BW) were given by gavage for the low, medium and high dose oviductus rana groups for 21 days. The rats in the control group were given normal saline by gavage. A loaded swimming test was carried on 8 rats of each group at one hour after the last gavage.

Is physical working capacity determined by optimal magnesium concentration?

Two lines of research originated in the mid-seventies; one attempted to gauge the effect of strenuous effort on serum magnesium concentration (S-Mg) and the second, the effect of S-Mg on the indices of physical working capacity. In apparently healthy trained young Israeli men, long-term studies of the effect of strenuous effort on S-Mg showed that after a moderately strenuous effort (70 km forced march), there was a decrease of S-Mg which became statistically significant after 72 h, whereas after a severely strenuous effort (120 km forced march), the decrease was biphasic, being significant af

Symptom Exacerbation With Physical and Mental Activity and the Association With Clinical Outcomes After Sport-Related Concussion in Youth and Adults.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between self-reported symptom exacerbation with physical/mental activity and cervical spine (CSp), v … ly. Positive CSp findings were associated with increased adjusted odds of symptom exacerbation with physical exertion (OR adj = 1.48; 97.5% CI: 1.04-2.19), whereas positive VOR findings were associated with increased adjusted odds of symptom exacerbation with mental exertion (OR adj = 2.29; 97.5% CI: 1.02-5.31). Having more previous concussions were associated with …

Cardiorespiratory response to physical exercise and psychological variables in panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible influence of psychological variables on cardiorespiratory responses and perceived exertion of patients with Panic Disorder (PD) during a submaximal exercise test. METHOD: Ten outpatients with PD and 10 matched healthy subjects walked up on a treadmill slope at a speed of 4 km/h in order to reach 65% of their maximum heart rate. Cardiorespiratory variables were continuously recorded. Before the exercise, the state and trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scores), fear of physical sensations (Body Sensation Questionnaire scores), and fear of autono

Childhood sporting deaths.

Exercise-induced collapse and sudden death are unusual in childhood. For this reason, a study was undertaken of a series of 12 cases of sudden death in childhood occurring during physical exertion associated with sporting activities. The age range was 7 to 16 years (mean 12.3 years, M:F ratio 5:1). Deaths resulted from trauma associated with the sporting activity, from an idiosyncratic response to exertion, or from exacerbation of a known underlying disease. Trauma was directly fatal (n = 4: vascular trauma in 1, head injury in 2, drowning in 1), exacerbated an underlying medical condition (n …

Is Playing in the Pit Really the Pits?: Pain, Strength, Music Performance Anxiety, and Workplace Satisfaction in Professional Musicians in Stage, Pit, and Combined Stage/Pit Orchestras.

INTRODUCTION: Typically, Australian orchestral musicians perform on stage, in an orchestra pit, or in a combination of both workplaces. This … ion was reported by pit musicians when rehearsing and performing. Stage/pit musicians reported less physical exertion when performing in the pit compared with performing on stage. Severity of MPA was significantly greater in pit musicians than mixed orchestra musicians. Pit musicians also reported more frequent bullying and lower job satisfaction compared with stag …

DESIGN: Comprehensive review of published literature examining physical exertion as a trigger for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). SETTING: Analysis of physiological studies, epidemiological investigations, and clinical observations from multiple international databases and research centers. PARTICIPANTS: This review encompassed multiple case-control a…
