Coumarin Promotes Hypocotyl Elongation by Increasing the Synthesis of Brassinosteroids in Plants.

Coumarins are natural products commonly found in plants and are typical allelopathic substances that strongly affect the growth of plants after being exudated from the root and help plants absorb Fe in cases of iron deficiency. Although coumarins have been found to have multiple effects, this understanding is still relatively limited. Here, we show that coumarin significantly promotes the elongation of the hypocotyl by enhancing cell elongation. Further research has found that coumarin increases the content of BR in plants by enhancing the expression of brassinosteroid (BR) synthesis genes. Th

Spider-Plant Interaction: The Role of Extrafloral Nectaries in Spider Attraction and Their Influence on Plant Herbivory and Reproduction.

Spiders, abundant and diverse arthropods which occur in vegetation, have received little attention in studies investigating spider-plant interactions, especially in plants which have extrafloral nectaries (EFNs). This study examines whether spiders attracted to EFNs on the plant Heteropterys pteropetala (Malpighiaceae) function as biological protectors, mitigating leaf herbivory and positively impacting plant fitness, through manipulative experiments. Spiders are attracted to EFNs because, in addition to consuming the resource offered by these structures, they also consume the herbivores that

Soil (microbial) disturbance affect the zinc isotope biogeochemistry but has little effect on plant zinc uptake.

Zinc (Zn) is an important micronutrient but can be toxic at elevated concentrations. We conducted an experiment to test the effect of plant growth and soil microbial disturbance on Zn in soil and plants. Pots were prepared with and without maize and in an undisturbed soil, a soil that was disturbed by X-ray sterilization and a soil that was sterilized but reconditioned with the original microbiome. The Zn concentration and isotope fractionation between the soil and the soil pore water increased with time, which is probably due to physical disturbance and fertilization. The presence of maize in

Community metagenomics reveals the processes of cadmium resistance regulated by microbial functions in soils with Oryza sativa root exudate input.

Plants exert a profound influence on their rhizosphere microbiome through the secretion of root exudates, thereby imparting critical effects on their growth and overall health. The results unveil that japonica rice showcases a remarkable augmentation in its antioxidative stress mechanisms under Cd stress. This augmentation is characterized by the sequestration of heavy metal ions within the root system and the prodigious secretion of a spectrum of flavonoids, including Quercetin, Luteolin, Apigenin, Kaempferide, and Sakuranetin. These flavonoids operate as formidable guardians, shielding the p

Emerging Paradigms in Strigolactone Biosynthesis, Signaling, and Evolutionary Dynamics.

Originally identified as root-derived exudates that trigger the germination of parasitic weed seeds, strigolactones (SLs) were later discovered to be crucial facilitators of plant symbiotic associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and then found to be a bona fide plant hormone class in 2008. Thereafter, SLs have been revealed as versatile regulators of plant development, regulating processes as diverse as shoot branching, root architecture, leaf senescence, vasculature formation, and stem secondary growth. Beyond these developmental roles, they function as signaling molecules, enabling p

Acute poisoning of friesian heifers by Solanum macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum.

Solanum macrocarpon (African eggplant) is a tropical plant widely cultivated as a delicious vegetable; the non-edible wild variety called Solanum macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum (the wild African eggplant) bears thorns or spikes on the stem and leaves. Thirteen yearling heifers on a dairy farm in Uganda suffered acute poisoning after eating berries of S. macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum. There was sudden onset of anorexia, copious salivation, severe dysentery and passage of red urine. The animals also had central nervous derangement (incordination, walking blindly) and exudative dermatitis. Four

Herbivory leaves a soil-borne defensive legacy that recruits parasitoids.

How organisms convert short-term stress into long-term defense is a key ecological question. Classic herbivore-induced plant volatiles recruit natural enemies but act briefly only in damaged tissues. Here, we report that leaf herbivory establishes a persistent soil defensive legacy to help uninfested subsequent plants attract parasitoids. During the conditioning phase, herbivory systemically activates jasmonate signaling, which reprograms root metabolism and promotes the exudation of specific flavonoids, notably daidzein and genistein. These compounds selectively restructure the rhizosphere mi

Plants respond to pathogen infection by enhancing the antifungal gene expression of root-associated bacteria.

Plant health and fitness widely depend on interactions with soil microorganisms. Some bacteria such as pseudomonads can inhibit pathogens by producing antibiotics, and controlling these bacteria could help improve plant fitness. In the present study, we tested whether plants induce changes in the antifungal activity of root-associated bacteria as a response to root pathogens. We grew barley plants in a split-root system with one side of the root system challenged by the pathogen Pythium ultimum and the other side inoculated with the biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0. We used repor

Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of nanomaterials on carbon metabolism in plants.

Agricultural nanotechnology offers innovative strategies to enhance crop productivity by modulating fundamental physiological processes in plants. Despite growing evidence that nanomaterials (NMs) can significantly promote crop growth, a standardized theoretical framework explaining the underlying mechanisms remains elusive. This review proposes a systematic framework to elucidate how NMs positively regulate plant carbon assimilation and partitioning to ultimately enhance crop yield. We categorize internal carbon flow into three interconnected modules:(1) inorganic-organic carbon inter-convers

Phytoremediation mechanism and role of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in weed plants for eco-restoration of hazardous industrial waste polluted site: a review.

Plants have numerous strategies for phytoremediation depending upon the characteristic of pollutants. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are essential to the process of phytoremediation and play a key part in it. The mechanism of PGPR for phytoremediation is mediated by two methods; under the direct method there is phytohormone production, nitrogen fixation, nutrient mineral solubilization, and siderophore production while the indirect method includes quorum quenching, antibiosis, production of lytic enzyme, biofilm formation, and hydrogen cyanide production. Due to their economic and

The invasive species Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) increases soil nutrient availability in northern hardwood-conifer forests.

The invasion of non-native plants can alter the diversity and activity of soil microorganisms and nutrient cycling within forests. We used field studies to analyze the impact of a successful invasive groundcover, Alliaria petiolata, on fungal diversity, soil nutrient availability, and pH in five northeastern US forests. We also used laboratory and greenhouse experiments to test three mechanisms by which A. petiolata may alter soil processes: (1) the release of volatile, cyanogenic glucosides from plant tissue; (2) the exudation of plant secondary compounds from roots; and (3) the decomposition

Rhizosphere engineering 2.0: Predictive microbiome design for climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable food production, and global food security.

The rhizosphere is a dynamic interface among plant roots, soil, and microbiota, where the resident microbial community shapes plant health, ecosystem resistance and resilience, nutrient cycling, and sustainable crop production. Yet the limited efficacy of conventional microbial inoculants under field conditions - reflecting poor persistence of introduced microorganisms, incomplete mechanistic understanding of plant-microbiome signalling, and high context-dependence across soils and climates - has created a need for predictive, rather than empirical, microbiome engineering. To close this gap, w

Phytoremediation of pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater: Insights into rhizobacterial dynamics related to pollutant degradation mechanisms during plant life cycle.

Rhizobacterial dynamics, relating to pollutant degradation mechanisms, over the course of plant lifespan have rarely been reported when using phytoremediation technologies for pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater treatment. This study investigated the rhizobacterial dynamics of Typha angustifolia in constructed wetlands to treat ibuprofen (IBP)-polluted wastewater throughout plant development from seedling, vegetative, bolting, mature, to senescent stages. It was found that conventional pollutant and IBP removals increased with plant development, reaching to the best performance at bolting o

Cloning of the cDNA for glutaredoxin, an abundant sieve-tube exudate protein from Ricinus communis L. and characterisation of the glutathione-dependent thiol-reduction system in sieve tubes.

Sieve-tube exudate protein (STEP) from Ricinus communis L. seedlings consists of a characteristic set of more than 100 different polypeptides, against which a complex antiserum was raised. This antiserum cross-reacted with dominant protein species (molecular weights 10-30 kDa) present in the sieve-tube exudate and, to a lesser extent, with proteins in tissue extracts of Ricinus and a wide range of other plant species. For further elucidation of the nature of individuals STEPs in the sieve tubes the anti-STEP serum was used to screen a cDNA expression library constructed from Ricinus cotyledon

[Effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiency on content of phenolic compounds in exudation of American ginseng].

OBJECTIVE: Some of the phenolic compounds detected in the soil of commercially cultivated American ginseng could inhibit the seed germination and seedling growth of American ginseng. In this paper we studied the root exudation of American ginseng induced by deficiency of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on the content of phenolic compounds. METHOD: Two years old American ginsengs were cultured in hydroponic culture with different nutrient solution. The culture solution was collected after 14 days. The exudations of different polarities in the culture solution were enriched by the amberlite

The Automated Root Exudate System (ARES): a method to apply solutes at regular intervals to soils in the field.

Root exudation is a key component of nutrient and carbon dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems. Exudation rates vary widely by plant species and environmental conditions, but our understanding of how root exudates affect soil functioning is incomplete, in part because there are few viable methods to manipulate root exudates in situ. To address this, we devised the Automated Root Exudate System (ARES), which simulates increased root exudation by applying small amounts of labile solutes at regular intervals in the field. The ARES is a gravity-fed drip irrigation system comprising a reservoir bottle

Nitrogen Input Alters Root Exudation of Kandelia obovata and Nitrogen Cycling in Constructed Mangrove Wetlands.

The role of mangrove root exudates in mediating the nitrogen cycle, particularly under high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) input, in coastal ecosystems remains unclear. This research investigated variation in the root exudates, and nitrogen transformation and output, in constructed mangrove wetlands planted with Kandelia obovata under high, moderate, and low nitrogen-input levels (PCWs-H, PCWs-M, and PCWs-L, respectively). PCWs-H promoted increased root density and biomass accumulation, enhancing soil nitrogen sequestration, whereas PCWs-L induced greater specific root length, specific roo

Chromium tolerance and detoxification in plants: Uptake, reduction and immobilization mechanisms.

Chromium contamination in soil is of environmental and health concern, with chromate (CrVI) being more toxic than chromite (CrIII). Despite recent progress in understanding Cr-plant interactions, mechanism-centered analysis of plant responses to Cr exposure is lacking. This review explores Cr tolerance and detoxification mechanisms in plants, focusing on Cr uptake, reduction and immobilization. In particular, the review examines the contributions of apoplastic and symplastic pathways to plant Cr uptake, highlighting the role of antioxidants in Cr reduction. Toxic CrVI inhibits plant growth by

"Unusual Presentation of Epitheloid Dermatofibroma- Rare Case Report".

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as aluminum (Al)] is becoming a serious global problem due to the rapid development of the social economy. Although plant growth-promoting rhizo-bacteria (PGPR) are the major protectants to alleviate metal toxicity, the study of these bacteria to ameliorate the toxic effects of Al is limited. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of different levels of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (5 ppm and 10 ppm) of accession number of MT123456 on plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attribute
