Polysomnography Differences Between Sleepy and Non-Sleepy Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Patients.

Background/Objectives: Factors underlying excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are not fully understood. We investigated whether polysomnography (PSG) parameters differed between non-sleepy and sleepy (based on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)) OSA patients with the same disease severity, which may play a role in the presence of EDS. Methods: A total of 1307 patients, without cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, or inflammatory comorbidities, diagnosed with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 per hour of sleep) with type 1 PSG were included. Based on the AHI…

Validating respiratory index of auto-titrating positive airway pressure device with polysomnography.

PURPOSE: Positive airway pressure (PAP) devices have been widely used as the first line of treatment in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Most advanced PAP devices support the estimation of respiratory index (RI) using the patient's mask airflow. In addition to the compliance factor for PAP device use, which is important for monitoring patient sleep health, RI is also becoming important for monitoring. However, there are few reports that validate RI of a PAP device with polysomnography. METHODS: Between January 2015 and December 2017, 50 participants were enrolled who were diagnosed with OSA and…

Radar-based sleep stage classification in children undergoing polysomnography: a pilot-study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Unobtrusive monitoring of sleep and sleep disorders in children presents challenges. We investigated the possibility of using Ultra-Wide band (UWB) radar to measure sleep in children. METHODS: Thirty-two children scheduled to undergo a clinical polysomnography participated; their ages ranged from 2 months to 14 years. During the polysomnography, the children's body movements and breathing rate were measured by an UWB-radar. A total of 38 features were calculated from the motion signals and breathing rate obtained from the raw radar signals. Adaptive boosting was used as mach…

Comparative Accuracy of Millimeter-Wave Radar and Polysomnography in Sleep Apnea Detection.

BACKGROUND Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) is a common and serious sleep disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction during sleep. Polysomnography is considered the gold standard for diagnosing OSAHS and evaluating its severity. However, traditional sensory monitoring methods, while effective, are often cumbersome, expensive, and unsuitable for home use. The present study introduces a non-sensory millimeter-wave radar sleep monitor, which provides a contactless, portable, and cost-effective alternative for assessing sleep apnea. The …

Role of Daytime Continuous Polysomnography in the Diagnosis of Pediatric Narcolepsy Type 1.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is still largely underdiagnosed or diagnosed too late in children. Difficulties in obtaining rapid and reliable diagnostic evaluations of the condition in clinical practice partially explain this problem. Predictors of NT1 include cataplexy and sleep-onset REM periods (SOREMPs), documented during nocturnal polysomnography (N-PSG) or through the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), although low CSF hypocretin-1 (CSF hcrt-1) is the definitive biological disease marker. Obtaining reliable MSLT results is not always feasible in children; therefore,…
