The impacts on population health by China's regional health data centers and the potential mechanism of influence.

BACKGROUND: China recently established a series of pilot regional health data centers with a mandate to acquire, consolidate, analyze, and translate data into evidence for health policy decision-making. This experiment with "big data" has the potential to influence population health and is the focus of this study. METHODS: This study used national longitudinal survey data from the China Family Panel Studies over the period 2014-2020 to empirically assess the impact of China's establishment of pilot regional health data centers on population health and health inequality. A difference-in-differ

Public Health Microbiome Curriculum: Looking Below the Tip of the Iceberg for Approaches to Population Health.

We discuss the opportunity for public health microbiome curricula to bridge the gaps in knowledge that exist between microbiome researchers and the lay public. We propose equipping public health professionals, important facilitators of public outreach and behaviour change, with three public health curriculum modules focused on breastfeeding, antibiotics and diet. These modules shift the focus from microbes as pathogens to potential partners in promoting health across the life course. Current public health messages cover only the 'tip of the iceberg' in exploring mechanisms, and this microbiome

[Racial inequalities in oral health in the Brazilian population: an analysis of the 2019 National Health Survey].

The scope of this study was to identify racial inequalities in oral health among the Brazilian population. This cross-sectional study used data from 64,830 Brazilians aged between 18 and 59 who participated in the 2019 National Health Survey. The outcomes evaluated were: self-assessment of oral health, loss of 13 or more teeth, use of prostheses, and recent use of dental services. The explanatory variables included race, gender, age, income, education, and area of residence. Poisson regression was used to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Of the total, 41.8% we

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population and health care workers.

The Health Sciences Foundation has assembled a multidisciplinary group around a series of questions about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population and specific groups within that population, particularly healthcare workers. In the general population, the most prevalent mental disorders have been anxiety, sleep disorders and affective disorders, primarily depression. There has been a considerable increase in suicidal behavior, especially in young women and men over 70 years of age. There has been an increase in alcohol abuse and nicotine, cannabis and c

MicroEnv: A microsimulation model for quantifying the impacts of environmental policies on population health and health inequalities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognise the critical need to improve population health and environmental sustainability. This paper describes the development of a microsimulation model, MicroEnv, aimed at quantifying the impact of environmental exposures on health as an aid to selecting policies likely to have greatest benefit. Its methods allow the integration of morbidity and mortality outcomes and the generation of results at high spatial resolution. We illustrate its application to the assessment of the impact of air pollution on health in London. Simulations are performed at Lo

The effects of housing on health and health risks in an aging population: a qualitative study in rural Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, Thailand has experienced an aging population, especially in rural areas. Research finds a strong, positive relationship between good quality housing and health, and this paper assesses the impact and living experience of housing of older people in rural Thailand. METHODS: This was a mixed-method study, using data from observations of the physical adequacy of housing, semistructured interviews with key informants, and archival information from health records for 13 households in rural Thailand. RESULTS: There were four main themes, each of which led to health

Recruitment of a probability-based general population health panel for public health research in Germany: the panel 'Health in Germany'.

BACKGROUND: This report presents the study design and recruitment outcomes for the 'Health in Germany' panel, a long-term population-based health survey infrastructure developed by the Robert Koch Institute. The initial recruitment was conducted using a stratified random sample of the German population and a mixed-mode approach combining web-based and paper questionnaires. We examine participation rates across demographic subgroups, assess sample composition, and analyze potential selection effects. METHOD: The panel recruitment survey for the 'Health in Germany' panel utilized the residents'

Association of the apolipoproteins with retinal arteriosclerosis in a health examination population.

BACKGROUND: Retinal arteriosclerosis is a non-invasive indicator for systemic microvascular damage and early atherosclerosis. While traditional lipid measures are used to establish cardiovascular risk predictors, Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), and their ratio might provide more insights into the atherogenic burden. However, their association with retinal arteriosclerosis in general health populations has not yet been explored. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 4,938 adults from a health examination cohort. Retinal arteriosclerosis was evaluated by employing fun

Understanding the context of mental health in deaf populations is important.

This commentary highlights the importance of understanding mental health in deaf populations within the context of language development and access. The authors, who are all Deaf professionals, emphasize that language deprivation-not hearing loss directly-is a primary cause of many mental health issues in deaf communities, and advocate for the inclusion of deaf experts in research and publications concerning deaf individuals' mental health.

Mental Health of the Roma Population in Spain: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: The Roma population in Spain faces multiple known risk factors and shows indicators of a worse mental health status than the general population. A few studies consider them a vulnerable population and found higher rates of mental health issues. This review aims to analyze the mental health status of the Roma population in Spain through existing literature. As a secondary objective, we have considered studying the degree of development of this research field in the Spanish context. DESIGN: Due to the lack of clarity about the availability and quality of the existing information, a

Mental Health in the Chilean Incarcerated Population: A Screening Approach.

From both a social and epidemiological perspective, incarcerated individuals in Latin America face a series of accumulated disadvantages in different areas, one of them being the deterioration in their mental health linked to confinement and the negative effects of incarceration. However, since mental health evaluations at the intake phase are virtually non-existent for incarcerated populations in Chile, the diagnosis of, monitoring of, and intervention initiatives on mental health issues are very limited, thus limiting the possibilities of causal relationship analysis and evidence-based inter

Global landscape of kidney health across Indigenous populations.

Approximately 480 million individuals worldwide (~6% of the global population) are Indigenous peoples. Despite their diverse cultures and histories, the shared legacy of colonialism has profoundly shaped their health and socioeconomic status. This legacy is deeply intertwined with poverty, systemic racism and historical trauma, contributing to significant health disparities compared with non-Indigenous populations. Among the many chronic diseases disproportionately affecting Indigenous peoples, chronic kidney disease (CKD) stands out as a major public health concern. Indigenous peoples experie

Insomnia in the Veteran Population: A Sleep Health and Wellness Intervention.

The purpose of this evidence-based project (EBP) was to determine if an evidence-based sleep health and wellness intervention improved sleep in veterans self-reporting a history of insomnia. Insomnia can negatively affect an individual's physical and psychological well-being, as well as increase health-care costs and decrease the overall quality of life. The intervention utilized a combination of insomnia treatments, delivered to two American Legion veteran participant groups: an Alabama American Legion Retreat and individuals at an American Legion Post site. The holistic-focused modalities us

Bone Health in the Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth Population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the scientific evidence on bone health in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth. RECENT FINDINGS: Gender-affirming medical therapies may be introduced during a key window of skeletal development in TGD adolescents. Before treatment, low bone density for age is more prevalent than expected in TGD youth. Bone mineral density Z-scores decrease with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and differentially respond to subsequent estradiol or testosterone. Risk factors for low bone density in this population include low body mass i

Is climate change affecting mental health of urban populations?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article, we outline an up-to-date overview of the climate change impact on mental health of urban population, conducted by searching the PubMed database for relevant studies published in the past 12-18 months, in English. RECENT FINDINGS: Climate change is part of a larger systemic ecological problem in which human demands are exceeding the regenerative capacity of the biosphere. We are witnessing a 'climate chaos', a phase of instability and transformation, which is leading humans into a psychological condition of 'systemic insecurity' and a shared feeling of uncer
