We have compared the clinical and metabolic responses of three groups of patients undergoing subtotal thyroidectomy for hyperthyroid Graves' disease. These patients were prepared for surgery with propranolol alone, propranolol plus potassium iodide or the long acting beta-adrenoceptor antagonist nadolol plus potassium iodide. Sporotrichosis is extremely rare in infants. This report describes an 84-day-old girl with fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis, presumably transmitted by a cat. A rapid, complete response to a low dose of oral potassium iodide therapy was attained. To our knowledge, this is the youngest reported patient with sporotrichosis, as well as the lowest effective daily dose of potassium iodide.

Sporotrichosis is rare in Turkey. We report a 48-year-old man who had subcutaneous sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii that was successfully treated with short-term itraconazole and potassium iodide. The isolate was susceptible to itraconazole also in vitro. Short-term itraconazole and potassium iodide should be agents of choice for treatment of subcutaneous sporotrichosis. However, treatment is controversial both in choice of agent used and in duration of therapy.

Thyroid function and serum TSI levels in two siblings with neonatal thyrotoxicosis are described. The first infant was treated with exchange transfusion and potassium iodide. The second infant was treated with intrauterine propylthiouracil followed by potassium iodide. In contrast to the first infant, the second infant had no clinical sign of neonatal thyrotoxicosis. He also had lower TSI levels with a biological half-life of 5 days. Only one of three assays showed some TSI activity in breast milk.
