Behavioral variability reduces the harmful longitudinal effects of partners' negative-direct behavior on relationship problems.

Based on growing evidence that negative-direct behavior that addresses important contextual and situational demands is less harmful than negative-direct behavior that occurs irrespective of current demands, the current investigation tests whether the longitudinal impact of partners' negative-direct behavior depends on whether that behavior is more variable versus stable across couples' daily life and conflict interactions. In Studies 1 and 2, participants rated how much their partner behaved in critical and unpleasant ways every day for 21 days. In Study 3, couples were video-recorded discussi

Cognitive-behavioral treatment for specific phobias with a child demonstrating severe problem behavior and developmental delays.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBTs) are widely used for anxiety disorders in typically developing children; however, there has been no previous attempt to administer CBT for specific phobia (in this case study, one-session treatment) to developmentally or intellectually disabled children. This case study integrates both cognitive-behavioral and behavior analytic assessment techniques in the CBT of water and height phobia in a 7-year-old male with developmental delays and severe behavior problems. One-session treatment [Ost, L. G. (1989). One-session treatment for specific phobias. Behaviour

Reliability of the Child Behavior Checklist for the assessment of behavioral problems of children and youth with mild mental retardation.

The assessment of psychopathology in persons with mental retardation requires reliable and valid instruments. In the present study, the reliability of the Child Behavior Checklist was determined, using data of 42 children and youth with mild mental retardation, with ages from 10 to 18 years. Kappa coefficients and intra-class correlations were computed to determine the reliability at item level and syndrome level. At item level, mean kappa's for inter-rater and test-retest reliability were 0.267 and 0.52, respectively. At syndrome level, mean intra-class correlations for inter-rater and test-r

An examination of the underlying influence of temperament and problem behaviors on drinking behaviors in a sample of adult offspring of alcoholics.

The present study investigated the potential mediating influence of childhood and early adolescent temperament and problem behaviors on the relation between parental alcoholism and adult drinking behaviors in a sample of 153 offspring of alcoholics and their controls. The influence of the alcoholic parent's and the offspring's gender on this relation was also assessed. Both gender of the parent and gender of the offspring were found to have important differential effects. More specifically, individuals with an alcoholic father consumed more alcohol, were more concerned about their drinking, an…

Prenatal cigarette smoking: Long-term effects on young adult behavior problems and smoking behavior.

We examined the long-term effects of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (PCSE) on the behavior problems and smoking behavior of 22-year-old offspring. The mothers of these offspring were interviewed about their tobacco and other drug use during pregnancy at the fourth and seventh gestational months, and at delivery. Data on the offspring are from interviews at age 22 (n=608). Behavior problems were measured by the Adult Self-Report (ASR) with the following outcome scales: total behavior problems, externalizing, internalizing, attention, anxiety/depression, withdrawn, thought, intrusive, aggress

Maternal depression, child frontal asymmetry, and child affective behavior as factors in child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Despite findings that parent depression increases children's risk for internalizing and externalizing problems, little is known about other factors that combine with parent depression to contribute to behavior problems. METHODS: As part of a longitudinal, interdisciplinary study on childhood-onset depression (COD), we examined the association of mother history of COD, child frontal electroencephalogram asymmetry, and affective behavior with children's concurrent behavior problems. RESULTS: Children in the COD group had higher anxious/depressed and aggressive problems than did chi

Behavior and caregiver burden: behavioral problems in patients with Alzheimer disease and its association with caregiver distress.

Behavioral dysfunction in Alzheimer disease (AD) is a major influence on the morbidity and disability of patients and is central to decisions on patient institutionalization. Behavioral dysfunction ranges from withdrawal, apathy, and depression to hostility, anger, and aggression, with most patients exhibiting some symptoms during the course of the disease. Symptoms of depression are common in AD patients (17-30%) and are associated with broad behavioral dysfunction and increased functional disability. Furthermore, the occurrence of depression in patients correlates strongly with caregiver bur

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and child behavioral problems.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may adversely affect child behaviors; however, findings of epidemiologic studies are inconsistent. We examined prenatal PFAS exposure in association with child behavioral problems. METHODS: Participants were 177 mother-child pairs from MARBLES (Markers of Autism Risk in Babies - Learning Early Signs), a cohort with elevated familial likelihood of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We quantified nine PFAS in maternal serum (1-3 samples per mother) collected from the 1st to 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. Child behavioral pro

Young Children's Contact with their Parents in Jail and Child Behavior Problems.

Contact between incarcerated parents and their children can help maintain family relationships. However, links between parent-child contact and child behavior problems are understudied in young children, especially the contexts in which visits and other forms of contact occur. Data were collected from 157 parents incarcerated in one of two jails regarding contact with their young children (age 2-6), as well as children's behavior problems. Findings indicated that jail site moderated the association between visit frequency and child behavior problems. At the jail that offered both on-site video

Sleep and behavioral problems in preschool-age children with Down syndrome.

Sleep is a major concern, especially in people with Down Syndrome (DS). Beyond Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a number of other sleep difficulties have been reported in children with DS, such as delayed sleep onset, night-time awakenings, and early morning awakenings. The detrimental effect of sleep difficulties seems to contribute to and exacerbate the cognitive and behavioral outcomes of DS. Although the screening for sleep disorders is recommended early in age in DS, only a few studies have evaluated the sleep profile in preschool-age children with DS. The aim of the current study was to assess t

Psychiatric Morbidity and Behavioral Problems in Children and Adolescents with Bronchial Asthma.

OBJECTIVES: Psychiatric morbidity and behavioral problems are quite common in children and adolescents with bronchial asthma, yet they remain underexplored and often ignored in clinical settings. This can impact the child's overall quality of life. There seems to be a dearth of Indian literature and so the current study was planned to assess psychological impact of asthma on the pediatric population. METHODS: Thirty children and adolescents, attending the Pediatric Chest Clinic at a tertiary care hospital in North India in the age group of 8-15 y having moderate to severe asthma formed the st
