Decrease in Behavioral Problems and Trauma Symptoms Among At-Risk Adopted Children Following Web-Based Trauma-Informed Parent Training Intervention.

Children who have experienced early adversities are at risk for behavioral problems and trauma symptoms. Using a two-group, pre-post intervention design, the authors evaluated the effectiveness of an online parent training for Trust-Based Relational Intervention, a trauma-informed, attachment-based intervention, in reducing behavioral problems and trauma symptoms in at-risk adopted children. Children of parents in the treatment group (n = 48) demonstrated significant decreases in behavioral problems and trauma symptoms after intervention. Scores for children in a matched-sample control group d

Cognitive constructs and social anxiety disorder: beyond fearing negative evaluation.

Pioneering models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) underscored fear of negative evaluation (FNE) as central in the disorder's development. Additional cognitive predictors have since been identified, including fear of positive evaluation (FPE), anxiety sensitivity, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU), but rarely have these constructs been examined together. The present study concurrently examined the variance accounted for in SAD symptoms by these constructs. Participants meeting criteria for SAD (n = 197; 65% women) completed self-report measures online. FNE, FPE, anxiety sensitivity, and IU a

Social anxiety and eating disorder comorbidity: the role of negative social evaluation fears.

Social anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid. However, it is unknown how specific domains of social anxiety relate to disordered eating. We provide data on these relationships and investigate social appearance anxiety and fear of negative evaluation as potential vulnerabilities linking social anxiety with disordered eating. Specifically, we examined five domains of social anxiety: Social interaction anxiety, fear of scrutiny, fear of positive evaluation, fear of negative evaluation, and social appearance anxiety. Results indicated that social appearance anxiety predicted body dissat

Positive Reframing of Psychosis Risk Reduces Social Stigma and Desire for Social Distance Among Adolescents: Moderating Roles of Prodromal Experiences, Sex, and Culture.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Communication about the at-risk mental state may shape not only clinical understanding but also peer-directed social evaluations. Prior work from our group has shown that positively reframing psychosis-risk feedback reduces perceived emotional harm and clinician stigma. The present study examined whether positive reframing influences adolescents' peer-directed social stigma and desire for social distance toward an at-risk youth, and whether these effects are moderated by adolescents' own distressing prodromal experiences, sex, and cultural background. METHODS: One hundred

Interrelationships between social exclusion, mental health and wellbeing in adolescents: insights from a national Youth Survey.

AIMS: Adolescence is a critical developmental phase during which young people are vulnerable to the experiences of mental ill-health and social exclusion (consisting of various domains including education and employment, housing, finances and social supports and relationships). The aims of this study were to (i) obtain an understanding of the relationships between social exclusion, mental health and wellbeing of young people; and (ii) identify potentially modifiable targets, or population groups that require greater or targeted supports. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Mission Australia

Having versus not having social interactions in patients diagnosed with depression or social phobia and controls.

Humans need meaningful social interactions, but little is known about the consequences of not having them. We examined meaningful social interactions and the lack thereof in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) or social phobia (SP) and compared them to a control group (CG). Using event-sampling methodology, we sampled participants' everyday social behavior 6 times per day for 1 week in participants' natural environment. We investigated the quality and the proportion of meaningful social interactions (when they had meaningful social interactions) and degree of wishing for an

Borderline personality disorder symptoms and affective responding to perceptions of rejection and acceptance from romantic versus nonromantic partners.

We examined event-contingent recording of daily interpersonal interactions in a diagnostically diverse sample of 101 psychiatric outpatients who were involved in a romantic relationship. We tested whether the unique effect of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms on affective responses (i.e., hostility, sadness, guilt, fear, and positive affect) to perceptions of rejection or acceptance differed with one's romantic partner compared with nonromantic partners. BPD symptoms were associated with more frequent perceptions of rejection and less frequent perceptions of acceptance across the

Neural processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are known to be highly sensitive to social rejection. Social information processing is assumed to play a key role for this shared psychopathological phenomenon. The first steps in social information processing are to encode social cues and to create a mental representation of the social situation. The aim of the current study was to test whether the perception of social participation in patients with BPD and patients with SAD is biased in this initial stage of social processing. Focus was on the

The social model of disability: dichotomy between impairment and disability.

The rhetoric of the social model of disability is presented, and its basic claims are critiqued. Proponents of the social model use the distinction between impairment and disability to reduce disabilities to a single social dimension-social oppression. They downplay the role of biological and mental conditions in the lives of disabled people. Consequences of denying biological and mental realities involving disabilities are discussed. People will benefit most by recognizing both the biological and the social dimensions of disabilities.

Embodying an avatar with a dissimilar appearance enhances insight problem solving.

Research on construal level theory suggests that psychological distance enhances creativity, as people tend to be more creative when considering events or objects that are spatially or temporally distant. With immersive technologies, individuals can use different forms of digital representations (or avatars) for work or entertainment in immersive virtual reality (IVR). We hypothesized that embodying an avatar with a dissimilar appearance, compared to a similar one, would induce psychological distance and thus enhance creative thinking and insight problem solving. To test this hypothesis, parti…

Impacts of Knowledge and Familiarity on Differences in Explicit Stigma and Implicit Biases Toward Autism Across France.

Autistic people frequently experience stigma that can be expressed whether consciously or unconsciously. This study examined how familiarity with autistic people, factual knowledge about autism, sociodemographic characteristics, and cultural value orientations relate to three facets of autism stigma: desired social distance, stereotypical beliefs, and implicit bias. French adults (N = 277) completed online measures of autism knowledge, familiarity, social distance, and stereotypes, a cultural orientation scale, and an Implicit Association Test assessing automatic evaluations of autism. Results

Role of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors in the long-term effects of repeated social defeat stress on the rewarding and psychomotor properties of cocaine in mice.

Exposure to social stress increases the vulnerability of experimental animals to the rewarding effects of cocaine and it has been suggested that the glutamatergic system could be involved in these effects of stress. The aim of this work is to determine the role of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors in the influence of social stress on the conditioned place preference and locomotor sensitization induced by cocaine. Mice treated with saline or NMDA antagonist memantine (5 or 10 mg/kg) underwent repeated social defeat or were kept in the exploration control condition. After three wee

A randomized controlled trial of intranasal oxytocin as an adjunct to exposure therapy for social anxiety disorder.

In humans, oxytocin nasal administration reduces social-threat perception and improves processes involved in communication and the encoding of positive social cues. The aim of this study was to determine whether oxytocin given as an adjunct to exposure therapy improves treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD) as indicated by a comprehensive set of symptom outcome measures. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we administered 24 IU of oxytocin or a placebo in combination with exposure therapy to twenty-five participants who met primary diagnosis for SAD. Participants admi

Attitudes toward problem drinkers, revisited: patient-therapist factors contributing to the differential treatment of patients with alcohol problems.

Although there are many treatment alternative open to people with drinking problems, health professionals still exhibit negative attitudes towards alcoholics. In a previous study, the author demonstrated that those patients who were self-labelled alcoholics were treated in a less preferential manner than those who did not identify as such. This study used both overt and unobtrusive measures to determine whether negative attitudes of intake interviewers towards problem drinkers were elicited by the patients' self-label as an alcoholic or by other variables related to perceived treatment outcome

Determinants of performance in Ethiopian short-distance runners: A mixed-methods investigation of training facilities and environmental influences.

BACKGROUND: Short-distance running is crucial for short distance athletic success in Ethiopia, yet research on the specific performance factors affecting these athletes is limited. While Ethiopia is renowned for its long-distance runners, the challenges faced by short-distance athletes remain underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how training environments, coaching practices, and socioeconomic factors influence the performance of Ethiopian short-distance runners. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to identify key performance determinants and evaluate the impact of training
