Impact of livestock-related air pollution on public health: A nationwide population-based study on COVID-19 in the Netherlands.

Ambient air pollution has been associated with increased COVID-19 incidence and severity worldwide. In the Netherlands, evidence suggests that air pollution from livestock farming in particular could contribute significantly to these effects. This study examines whether residential exposure to endotoxin emissions from livestock farming contributes significantly to increased risk of COVID-19 incidence and severity. We estimated annual-average livestock-related endotoxin exposure (EU/m3) for all Dutch residential addresses using advanced Gaussian dispersion modelling on detailed farm emission da

Conflict-Related WASH System Failure and Public Health Preparedness in the Middle East: A Policy-Oriented Narrative Review.

Conflicts in the Middle East have intensified public health emergencies through progressive failure of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems. This policy-oriented narrative review synthesizes peer-reviewed and humanitarian evidence published between January 2020 and March 2026 on WASH system failure and related public health consequences in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territory, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. Across these settings, four recurring mechanisms emerged: physical damage; loss of electricity, fuel, chemicals, and spare parts; restrictions on access and workforce safe

Race-related fatalities in U.S. jump racing, 2023-2025: incidence and documentation across public reporting sources.

BACKGROUND: Fatality reporting in National Steeplechase Association (NSA)-sanctioned U.S. jump racing is distributed across several public sources, and no single source consistently links the race incident with the final clinical outcome. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To identify and verify race-related fatalities associated with NSA-sanctioned jump-racing starts, compare documentation across public sources, and estimate minimum confirmed fatality incidence. METHODS: The study population included official starters in completed NSA-sanctioned hurdle/fence and timber races during 2023-2025. Potential fatal

Lessons From Building a Large, Public HIV-Related Database in Support of the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US Initiative.

The HIV epidemic remains a national priority in the United States, and the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative has renewed the call for expanded prevention and treatment strategies capable of reducing new HIV infections by 90% by 2030. Achieving this goal requires robust, integrated data for understanding HIV-related needs, barriers to care, and the effectiveness of interventions. However, despite the existence of numerous publicly available datasets, few integrate multiple domains such as HIV outcomes, social determinants of health, and community-level factors. The lack of unified data and dif

Age-related antibody response to Orthopoxviruses and implications for public health measures: Insights from a South Korean study.

BACKGROUND: After the eradication of smallpox, there have been no specific public health measures for any Orthopoxviruses (OPXVs). Therefore, it is necessary to countermeasure OPXV infections after Mpox (formerly monkeypox) occurrences, such as the latest global outbreak in 2022-2023. This study aimed to provide crucial insights for the development of effective public health policy making against mpox in populations residing in regions where the virus is not prevalent. METHODS: This study used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to examine smallpox and mpox antibodies in Koreans with t

The national public health response to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: Origins, evolution, and recommendations to improve early detection.

Longstanding gaps in the detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and biopsychosocial care call for public health action to improve population health. We aim to broaden the understanding of the iterative role state plans have played over the last 20 years in prioritizing improvements in the detection of ADRD, primary care capacity, and equity for disproportionately affected populations. Informed by national ADRD priorities, state plans convene stakeholders to identify local needs, gaps, and barriers and set the stage for development of a national public health infrastructu

Systematic review of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies of five public health-related behaviours: review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involves repeated, real-time assessments of phenomena (eg, cognitions, emotions, behaviours) over a period of time in naturalistic settings. EMA is increasingly used to study both within-person and between-person processes. We will review EMA studies investigating key health behaviours and synthesise: (1) study characteristics (eg, frequency of assessments, adherence, incentives), (2) associations between psychological predictors and behaviours and (3) moderators of adherence to EMA protocols. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This review will focus on

An Integrated Approach for Spatio-Temporal Cholera Disease Hotspot Relation Mining for Public Health Management in Punjab, Pakistan.

Public health management can generate actionable results when diseases are studied in context with other candidate factors contributing to disease dynamics. In order to fully understand the interdependent relationships of multiple geospatial features involved in disease dynamics, it is important to construct an effective representation model that is able to reveal the relationship patterns and trends. The purpose of this work is to combine disease incidence spatio-temporal data with other features of interest in a mutlivariate spatio-temporal model for investigating characteristic disease and

Standardizing Opioid Prescribing Practices for Cancer-Related Pain Via a Novel Interactive Documentation Template at a Public Hospital.

PURPOSE: Opioid misuse during cancer pain management places patients at risk for harm and physicians for legal liability. Identifying and monitoring patients who are at risk is challenging given the lack of validated clinical tools and evidence-based guidelines. In the current study, we aimed to standardize opioid prescribing practices at a community oncology clinic to help ensure patient safety and physician compliance with Texas state regulations. METHODS: We used the Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology. In the planning phase, current practices of assessing opioid efficacy, toxicity, and misuse w

The III Italian Consensus Conference on Pleural Mesothelioma (MM) convened on January 29th 2015. This report presents the conclusions of the 'Epidemiology, Public Health and Occupational Medicine' section. MM incidence in 2011 in Italy was 3.64 per 100,000 person/years in men and 1.32 in women. Incidence trends are starting to level off. Ten percent of cases are due to non-occupational exposure. Incidence among women is very high in Italy, because of both non-occupational and occupational exposure. The removal of asbestos in place is proceeding slowly, with remaining exposure. Meat Juice Serology and Improved Food Chain Information as Control Tools for Pork-Related Public Health Hazards.

The seroprevalence of Salmonella spp., pathogenic Yersinia spp., Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp. was studied in 1353 finishing pigs from 259 farms that were allocated according to farm types: large fattening farms (≥ 1000 pig places), small fattening farms (< 1000 pig places) and farrow-to-finish farms. The antibodies were analysed with commercial ELISA kits in meat juice samples that were collected at Finnish slaughterhouses. Salmonella antibodies were rare (3% of pigs, 14% of farms) when the cut-off optical density (OD) value 0.2 was used. Antibodies to pathogenic Yersinia spp. and T.

Open drug scenes and drug-related public nuisance: a visual rapid assessment research study in Dublin, Ireland.

The research was undertaken at a time of increasing public concerns for drug- and alcohol-related public nuisance in the city center of Dublin, Ireland. Rapid Assessment Research was conducted involving qualitative interviewing with drug service users; business, transport, community, voluntary, and statutory stakeholders (n = 61); and an environmental mapping exercise. The interplay between homelessness, loitering, an influx of drug users via city metro systems, transient open drug scenes, street drinking, drug injecting, intimidation, knife crime, and prescribed medication abuse was evident.

Relation of people-centered public health and person-centered healthcare management: a case study to reduce burn-out.

Healthcare management is one practical tool for mediation and implementation of public health into clinical healthcare outcomes and is taken in our case study as an exemplar arena to demonstrate the vital importance of the person-centered approach. Healthcare personnel are frequently at risk for the 'burn-out' syndrome. However, modern measures of burn-out recognize burn-out only at a late stage when it is fully developed. There are no available methods to assess the risk for vulnerability to burnout in healthcare systems. Our aim was therefore to design a complex person-centered model for det
