The epidemiology of Q fever.

Q fever was first described in Australia and has since been reported from many countries. Rickettsia burneti infects numerous species of mammals and has been isolated from ticks. Infected cattle, sheep and goats remain healthy but excrete the organism, which is present in high concentration in products of conception and survives in dust for long periods. The ways in which humans may become infected are considered. Many of these infections do not cause symptoms, but some are fatal and the prevention of this disease remains a challenge.

[Q Fever: what's new?].

Q fever is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a Gram-negative, intracellular bacterium. Sheep and goats are the main reservoirs of this zoonosis, which is transmitted either by aerosols, over long distances via the wind or through milk or dairy products. Acute Q fever may be asymptomatic, or present as a flu-like syndrome, atypical pneumonia or hepatitis. Chronic Q fever manifests in a wide variety of ways, including blood culture-negative endocarditis, chronic hepatitis, osteoarticular involvement (spondylitis, arthritis, osteitis) or uveitis. Autoimmune diseases can be sometimes induced by chronic…

Q Fever-Associated Chorioretinitis.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent in Q fever, a zoonotic disease. Ocular manifestations of this disease are extremely rare and have been infrequently reported. In this report, we describe a rare case of chorioretinitis in a patient incompletely treated for Q fever. We highlight the unique ocular manifestation with multimodal imaging, and the importance of a thorough history and prompt and correct treatment of the disease with systemic therapy. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina 2024;55:412-414.].

Acute Q Fever Pneumonia.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii which has a worldwide distribution. Pneumonia occurs in almost half of the patients who have an acute C. burnetii infection. Less than 5-6% of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is found to be caused by this organism. Endemicity of C. burnetii infection has been recorded in various studies carried out in our country. However there is no mention about Q fever as a cause of CAP in the various studies done to identify the aetiological agent. We report a case of acute Q fever related pneumonia and this appears to be the first reported case …

Emergence of q Fever.

Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis with many acute and chronic manifestations caused by the pathogen Coxiella burnetii. Farm animals and pets are the main reservoirs of infection, and transmission to human beings is mainly accomplished through inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Persons at greatest risk are those in contact with farm animals and include farmers, abattoir workers, and veterinarians. The organs most commonly affected during Q fever are the heart, the arteries, the bones and the liver. The most common clinical presentation is an influenza-like illness with varying degrees of pneumo…

In Atlantic Canada, the traditional risk factor for acquisition of Q fever infection has been exposure to infected parturient cats or newborn kittens. In this study we describe the first case of Q fever in Nova Scotia acquired as a result of direct exposure to sheep. A serosurvey of the associated flock was undertaken using an indirect immunofluorescence ass…

[Q Fever in Tunisia].

Q fever is a common zoonosis with almost a worldwide distribution caused by Coxiella burnetii. Farm animals and pets are the main reservoirs of infection and transmission to humans is usually via inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Infection in humans is often asymptomatic, but it can manifest as an acute disease (usually a self-limited flu-like illness, pneumonia or hepatitis) or as a chronic form (mainly endocarditis, but also hepatitis and chronic-fatigue syndrome). In Tunisia, although prevalence of anti-Coxiella burnetii was high among blood donors, Q fever was rarely reported and freque…

[Q fever: an overview].

Q fever, a zoonosis caused by the gram-negative bacterium Coxiella burnetii, occurs worldwide and affects both humans and animals. Ruminants are considered to be the main source of infection of humans, with the main route of infection being through inhalation of the organism of fine-particle aerosols. Abortion is the main clinical sign in ruminants. During and after abortion, large quantities of the bacterium are shed via the placenta and other vaginal secretions. The bacterium may also be present in faeces and milk. The bacterium can survive for a long time in the environment after shedding a…

[Q fever--case report].

This work presents a case of Q fever in a 55-year-old man who came back from Lebanon. The dominant symptoms of the disease were fever and dry cough and in physical testing fine rales at the bottom of the right lung. An epidemiologic investigation (a monthly stay in Lebanon) and a serologic testing (indirect immunofluorescence assay) were useful to confirm a diagnosis of Q fever. Moreover the authors of the work paid attention to the differential diagnosis of Q fever and effectiveness of tetracycline in the treatment. The basic methods of the prevention of the disease were also described. In th…
