Ureteral Stents: Impact on Quality of Life.

Ureteral stents have an indispensable place in urology, and indications for their use are increasing. However, stents can affect their users' quality of life negatively because of complications and adverse effects. This descriptive research aimed to determine the effect of ureteral stenting on quality of life. The study sample consisted of 75 patients. Data were collected using a questionnaire form, the SF-36 Quality of Life Scale, and the International Prostate Symptom Score. Patients were interviewed twice (before stenting and 1 month after stenting). The data were analyzed with descriptive …

Quality of life after paediatric ischaemic stroke.

AIM: Paediatric arterial ischaemic stroke can lead to reduced quality of life (QoL). It is important to identify predictors of QoL to support recovery. We examined long-term QoL after arterial ischaemic stroke concerning different variables. METHOD: Children registered in the Swiss Neuropediatric Stroke Registry and suffering from arterial ischaemic stroke between 2000 and 2008 were included. Two years post-stroke, assessments included intelligence quotient tests for cognitive impairment and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) for neurological impairment; 5 years post-stroke, the Kidscreen-27 was use…

Health-related quality of life in morphoea.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with morphoea, and previous studies have yielded conflicting results. OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of morphoea on HRQoL, and clinical and demographic correlates of HRQoL in adults. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey (n = 73) of the Morphea in Adults and Children cohort. RESULTS: Morphoea impairs HRQoL in adults. Patients were most impaired by emotional well-being and concerns that the disease would progress to internal organs. Patients with morphoea had worse skin-specific HRQoL than thos…

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life in patients with vascular chronic Q fever at time of diagnosis and during follow-up. Based upon the SF-36 questionnaire, the mean physical and mental health of each patient were assessed at 3-month intervals for up to 18 months. A total of 26 patients were included in the study. At time of diagnosis, the mean physical health and mental health score was 50·6 [95% confidence interval (CI) 46·7-54·4] and 44·6 (95% CI 41·6-47·5), respectively. During treatment, the mean physical health score declined significantly by 1·7 points each 3 month…

Quality of life in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has a profound impact with a high disease burden. In order to truly understand the scope of the effect OCD has on the patient population, one must take into account not only the relentless symptoms beleaguering the patients but also examine their overall ability to enjoy their life. Quality of life (QOL) assessments/improvements are becoming an increasingly important component of healthcare, especially in the mental health field. This review examines QOL in OCD, as well as the influence of comorbidities, and the impact that OCD treatment has on QOL. We searc…

PATIENTS AND METHODS: All 2,252 patients completed the Dutch version of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI-D; score 0-100 with higher scores representing more impairment). The results were classified into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe impairment. Quality-of-life measurement in blistering diseases.

Both congenital and acquired bullous dermatoses have the potential to impose a significant burden of disease, and the impact exerted on the quality of life (QOL) of patients is often multifaceted. The qualitative and quantitative studies reviewing QOL in patients with bullous dermatoses have all reported a significant decrease in QOL scores compared with the greater population using a range of patient-based measures. Formal evaluation of QOL in the setting of bullous dermatoses facilitates the assessment of disease severity and mapping of disease trajectory and can capture outcomes of therapeu…

Quality of life issues in continence care.

Urinary and faecal incontinence affect a significant proportion of the population. Both types of incontinence can limit activities of daily living, restrict the individual's ability to function in society and, as a consequence, affect quality of life. Simple treatments and management strategies can be effective, however non-disclosure of symptoms by patients and lack of active diagnosis by clinicians pose significant barriers to the identification of individuals with incontinence, resulting in poor access to treatment. This article will enable readers to identify opportunities within their own…

Quality of life and diagnostic imaging outcomes.

The US Preventive Services Task Force recently promulgated revised guidelines for screening mammography. Criticisms were related to the unde … d, especially when the harms occur immediately and the benefits are delayed. The importance of both quality of life and longevity in health care decision making require minimizing negative impacts of mammography when screening low-risk populations. Current practice differs significantly from the successful randomized trials, front-loading costs of false-positive …

METHODS: 60 patients with esophageal achalasia, operated on between 2001 and 2007, were studied retrospectively. Before surgery, the demographics and the diagnostic test results were recorded. The patients submitted a dysphagia score for quality of life before and after surgery, and lower esophageal sphincter pressure (PLES) was measured. We also studied the difference produced in quality of …

Assessing quality of life in clinical research.

In clinical research the objective has increasingly become to improve an individual's quality of life (QOL). That is, increasing both the direct as well as the indirect aspects of an individual's life. Simple, reliable measurement techniques for QOL with well-established theoretical foundations are warranted, despite the difficulty in measuring QOL. Such measurement techniques will not only provide accurate measurement of QOL, but allow for broad comparisons. This paper aims to introduce and explain the three most widely used techniques for assessing QOL: the Visual Analog Scale, the Standard …

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates quality of life (QOL) in patients following surgery for vestibular schwannoma (VS) using the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI), and a pain questionnaire. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The questionnaires were sent to 95 patients who had undergone surgery at our institution. The impact of several factors on self-assessed QOL was also evaluated. RESULTS: The response rate was 72 %. Considering overall QOL, 30 % patients reported that QOL became better, 56 % patients said it was worse, and in 14 % patients it remained the same. No differences in postoperative QOL were found …
