Calibration of Radar RCS Measurement Errors by Observing the Luneburg Lens Onboard the LEO Satellite.

Accurate radar RCS measurements are critical to the feature recognition of spatial targets. A calibration method for radar RCS measurement errors is proposed for the first time in the context of special target tracking by observing the Luneburg Lens onboard the LEO satellite. The Luneburg Lens has favorable RCS scattering properties for the radar microwave. Thus, the laboratory RCS measurements of the Luneburg Lens, with some fixed incident frequency and with different incident orientations for the radar microwave, will be implemented in order to build a database. The incident orientation for …

Rectal and urinary dysfunction in the TROG 03.04 RADAR trial for locally advanced prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: The RADAR trial determines whether adjuvant androgen suppression, bisphosphonates and radiation dose escalation for localised prostate cancer (PC) may improve oncologic outcomes. This study examines whether these measures increase rectal and urinary dysfunction and are secondary trial endpoints. METHODS: Using a 2×2 factorial trial design men with locally advanced PC were randomly allocated 6 months i.m. leuprorelin prior to radiotherapy either alone or followed by 12 months i.m. leuprorelin. These two groups received 18 months i.v. zoledronic acid (Z) commencing at randomisation …

Emergence of Undetectable Malaria Parasites: A Threat under the Radar amid the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) play a critical role in malaria diagnosis and control. The emergence of Plasmodium falciparum parasites that can evade detection by RDTs threatens control and elimination efforts. These parasites lack or have altered genes encoding histidine-rich proteins (HRPs) 2 and 3, the antigens recognized by HRP2-based RDTs. Surveillance of such parasites is dependent on identifying false-negative RDT results among suspected malaria cases, a task made more challenging during the current pandemic because of the overlap of symptoms between malaria and COVID-19, particularly in

All-in-One Multispectral Stealth Device for X-Band Radar, Visible, and Near-Infrared Spectra.

Multispectral stealth is a critical technology in modern military and security applications. Conventional approaches generally address stealth in only one or two spectral bands-such as radar, visible light, or infrared (IR)-thereby limiting their effectiveness against advanced detection systems. In this study, we present, for the first time, an integrated and dynamically adaptive electrochromic system capable of achieving simultaneous stealth across the radar, near-infrared (NIR), and visible spectra. This single-device platform surpasses traditional independent or discrete methods in complexi…

SDEF-BEV: spatial-aware dual-expert radar-camera fusion for robust BEV 3D object detection.

Bird's-eye view (BEV) radar-camera fusion is an economical and robust solution for 3D perception in autonomous driving. However, existing methods struggle with spatial misalignment between modalities and lack the ability to dynamically adjust the contribution of each modality across different spatial regions in complex scenarios. To address these issues, we propose SDEF-BEV, a novel spatial-aware dual-expert fusion network. At its core, SDEF-BEV adopts a parallel dual-path fusion architecture. The Spatial-Aware Dual-Expert Fusion (SDEF) module adaptively learns optimal feature fusion strategie…

Dynamic Feature Fusion for Sparse Radar Detection: Motion-Centric BEV Learning with Adaptive Task Balancing.

This paper proposes a novel motion-aware framework to address key challenges in 4D millimeter-wave radar detection for autonomous driving. While existing methods struggle with sparse point clouds and dynamic object characterization, our approach introduces three key innovations: (1) A Bird's Eye View (BEV) fusion network incorporating velocity vector decomposition and dynamic gating mechanisms, effectively encoding motion patterns through independent XY-component convolutions; (2) a gradient-aware multi-task balancing scheme using learnable uncertainty parameters and dynamic weight normalizati…

A Sliding Window-Based CNN-BiGRU Approach for Human Skeletal Pose Estimation Using mmWave Radar.

In this paper, we present a low-cost, low-power millimeter-wave (mmWave) skeletal joint localization system. High-quality point cloud data are generated using the self-developed BHYY_MMW6044 59-64 GHz mmWave radar device. A sliding window mechanism is introduced to extend the single-frame point cloud into multi-frame time-series data, enabling the full utilization of temporal information. This is combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for spatial feature extraction and a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU) for temporal modeling. The proposed spatio-temporal information fusio…

Integration of Sentinel-1A Radar and SMAP Radiometer for Soil Moisture Retrieval over Vegetated Areas.

NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) was originally designed to combine high-resolution active (radar) and coarse-resolution but highly sensitive passive (radiometer) L-band observations to achieve unprecedented spatial resolution and accuracy for soil moisture retrievals. However, shortly after SMAP was put into orbit, the radar component failed, and the high-resolution capability was lost. In this paper, the integration of an alternative radar sensor with the SMAP radiometer is proposed to enhance soil moisture retrieval capabilities over vegetated areas in the absence of the original …

Doppler Radar Sensor-Based Fall Detection Using a Convolutional Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Model.

Falls among the elderly are a common and serious health risk that can lead to physical injuries and other complications. To promptly detect and respond to fall events, radar-based fall detection systems have gained widespread attention. In this paper, a deep learning model is proposed based on the frequency spectrum of radar signals, called the convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (CB-LSTM) model. The introduction of the CB-LSTM model enables the fall detection system to capture both temporal sequential and spatial features simultaneously, thereby enhancing the accuracy and relia…

Implementation of Adaptive-Bayesian DStoch technique for obtaining winds from MST radar covering higher altitudes.

It is challenging to estimate winds accurately from higher altitudes using VHF-MST radar. The current study introduces the Adaptive-Bayesian Deterministic Stochastics Technique (ADStoch), which implements an Empirical Bayesian 1D prediction method using stochastics to analyze radar signals. A new and robust estimator for empirical wavelet shrinkage with Gaussian prior of the nonzero mean for wavelet coefficients is presented, which makes the current prior different from other priors. The mean parameters and the prior covariance hyperparameters follow a pseudo maximum likelihood method for comp…

Real Aperture Radar Super-Resolution Imaging for Sea Surface Monitoring Based on a Hybrid Model.

In recent years, super-resolution imaging techniques have been intensely introduced to enhance the azimuth resolution of real aperture scanning radar (RASR). However, there is a paucity of research on the subject of sea surface imaging with small incident angles for complex scenarios. This research endeavors to explore super-resolution imaging for sea surface monitoring, with a specific emphasis on grounded or shipborne platforms. To tackle the inescapable interference of sea clutter, it was segregated from the imaging objects and was modeled alongside I/Q channel noise within the maximum like…

Human Health Risk Assessment of 4-12 GHz Radar Waves using CST STUDIO SUITE Software.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of dental amalgam is elemental mercury by weight. Accumulating body of evidence now shows that not only static magnetic fields (SMF) but both ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations can increase the rate of mercury release from dental amalgam fillings. Iranian scientists firstly addressed this issue in 2008 but more than 10 years later, it became viral worldwide. OBJECTIVE: This review was aimed at evaluating available data on the magnitude of the effects of different physical stressors (excluding chewing and brushing) on the release of toxic mercury

1-Tx/5-Rx Through-Wall UWB Switched-Antenna-Array Radar for Detecting Stationary Humans.

This research proposes a through-wall S-band ultra-wideband (UWB) switched-antenna-array radar scheme for detection of stationary human subjects from respiration. The proposed antenna-array radar consists of one transmitting (Tx) and five receiving antennas (Rx). The Tx and Rx antennas are of Vivaldi type with high antenna gain (10 dBi) and narrow-angle directivity. The S-band frequency (2-4 GHz) is capable of penetrating non-metal solid objects and detecting human respiration behind a solid wall. Under the proposed radar scheme, the reflected signals are algorithmically preprocessed and filte…

Causes of death among Belgian professional military radar operators: a 37-year retrospective cohort study.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of the electromagnetic (microwave) emissions of radars, as well as about the ionizing radiation that is emitted on short distances (<2 m) by devices in the radars producing the microwaves. We retrospectively compared the cause specific mortality of 4,417 Belgian professional male military personnel who served in anti-aircraft radar units in Germany between 1963 and 1994 to the cause specific mortality of 2,932 Belgian military personnel who served at the same time in the same place in battalions not equipped with radars. Mean follow-up was 26 years in…

Lightweight Gait-Based Person Identification via Transmit-Channel Differential Encoding with MIMO Millimeter-Wave Radar.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar enables non-contact human identification by exploiting gait micro-Doppler signatures without capturing visual imagery. Nevertheless, practical deployment encounters several critical challenges: strong torso echoes that obscure faint limb-motion features, channel-dependent responses caused by unconstrained walking styles, and computational limitations on edge hardware. This paper proposes a lightweight gait-based human identification method for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems, which integrates adaptive Gamma correction, multi-transmit-channel d…
