Potential of Lactoferrin Against the Radiation-Induced Brain Injury.

The purpose of this work was to study the effects of lactoferrin (Lf) on acute (days 3 and 15) and early-delayed (day 30) changes in the dentate gyrus of mouse hippocampus caused by whole-body gamma-irradiation. Male C57BL/6 mice received Lf (4 mg per mouse, i.p. injection) immediately after whole-body gamma-irradiation at a dose of 7.5 Gy from a 60Co source. The effect of Lf on mouse behavior was evaluated using "Open field" and "Elevated plus-maze" tests. The proportion of cells with DNA replication was determined by 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation (thymidine analog) and detected by

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Treatment of Cutaneous Radiation Injury.

Regenerative medicine is an emerging field of medicine focusing on the development of novel therapies to repair, replace, or regenerate damaged cells and tissues. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) use to promote tissue repair in a variety of injury and disease states is one promising area of regenerative medicine. Herein, we review the fundamental stem cell biology of MSCs, their use in the treatment of radiation injury to internal organs, cutaneous injury, and specifically, cutaneous radiation injury. We also highlight publicly available clinical case reports where MSCs have been used in the treatm

Tolerogenic dendritic cells in radiation-induced lung injury.

Radiation-induced lung injury is a common complication associated with radiotherapy. It is characterized by early-stage radiation pneumonia and subsequent radiation pulmonary fibrosis. However, there is currently a lack of effective therapeutic strategies for radiation-induced lung injury. Recent studies have shown that tolerogenic dendritic cells interact with regulatory T cells and/or regulatory B cells to stimulate the production of immunosuppressive molecules, control inflammation, and prevent overimmunity. This highlights a potential new therapeutic activity of tolerogenic dendritic cells

[Imaging diagnosis and evaluation of radiation-induced intestinal injury].

Radiation-induced intestinal injury significantly impacts the quality of life and even prognosis of patients. Timely diagnosis and accurate assessment are crucial in clinical practice. Imaging examinations play a vital role in the diagnosis and evaluation of radiation-induced intestinal injury. CT offers fast scanning speed and wide coverage but has limited soft tissue resolution. On the other hand, MRI offers superior soft tissue resolution, along with the capability for multi-sequence and multi-parameter imaging, and the ability to assess the effect of tumor treatment. However, its scanning

Biomarkers to Predict Lethal Radiation Injury to the Rat Lung.

Currently, there are no biomarkers to predict lethal lung injury by radiation. Since it is not ethical to irradiate humans, animal models must be used to identify biomarkers. Injury to the female WAG/RijCmcr rat has been well-characterized after exposure to eight doses of whole thorax irradiation: 0-, 5-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- and 15-Gy. End points such as SPECT imaging of the lung using molecular probes, measurement of circulating blood cells and specific miRNA have been shown to change after radiation. Our goal was to use these changes to predict lethal lung injury in the rat model, 2 week

A Review of Radiation-Induced Vascular Injury and Clinical Impact.

The number of cancer survivors continues to increase because of advances in therapeutic modalities. Along with surgery and chemotherapy, radiotherapy is a commonly used treatment modality in roughly half of all cancer patients. It is particularly helpful in the oncologic treatment of patients with breast, head and neck, and prostate malignancies. Unfortunately, among patients receiving radiation therapy, long-term sequalae are often unavoidable, and there is accumulating clinical evidence suggesting significant radiation-related damage to the vascular endothelium. Ionizing radiation has been k

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for late radiation tissue injury.

BACKGROUND: This is the third update of the original Cochrane Review published in July 2005 and updated previously in 2012 and 2016. Cancer is a significant global health issue. Radiotherapy is a treatment modality for many malignancies, and about 50% of people having radiotherapy will be long-term survivors. Some will experience late radiation tissue injury (LRTI), developing months or years following radiotherapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been suggested as a treatment for LRTI based on the ability to improve the blood supply to these tissues. It is postulated that HBOT may result

The role of melatonin in preventing radiation-induced intestinal injury.

PURPOSE: Despite the therapeutic effects of radiotherapy on tumor cells, it has potential severe adverse effects on the surrounding normal tissues. Acute or chronic intestinal adverse effects that are likely to occur in patients undergoing radiotherapy for pelvic and abdominal cancers lead to increased morbidity, significant impairment of the quality of life, and economic losses. Various biological, chemical and pharmacological agents are being tested to protect from and to treat radiation enteritis. This experimental study aimed to investigate the protective effects of melatonin against radia

Advances on mechanism and treatment of salivary gland in radiation injury.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most frequent tumour in head and neck malignant. The current treatment is mainly based on surgery therapy, radiation therapy and chemical therapy. Meanwhile, there are many a defect in the treatment. For example, there are many defects in radiotherapy. Radioactive salivatitis is the most common. In addition, there are a series of changes such as dry mouth, oral mucositis, rampant dental caries, and radioactive osteomyelitis of jaw, which cause swallowing, chewing problems, and taste dysfunction. Currently, the research on radioactive salivatitis is pr

Medical prevention and treatment of radiation-induced carotid injury.

Radiotherapy has significantly improved the survival of cancer patients but is also associated with several adversities, including radiation-induced carotid injury (RICI). The RICI mechanisms are complex, including vessel inflammatory injury, carotid atherosclerosis, intimal proliferation, media necrosis, and peri-adventitial fibrosis. The main manifestation and adverse consequence of RICI is carotid artery stenosis (CAS), which can lead to stroke and transient ischemic attack. Currently, carotid artery injury is primarily diagnosed via color-coded duplex sonography. Early detection of traumat

The Cellular and Molecular Mechanism of Radiation-Induced Lung Injury.

The lung is one of several moderately radiosensitive organs. Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI), including acute radiation pneumonitis and chronic radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis, occurs most often in radiotherapy of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and other thoracic cancers. Clinical symptoms of RILI include dry cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, and even severe respiratory failure and death. The occurrence of RILI is a complex process that includes a variety of cellular and molecular interactions which ultimately leads to large fibroblast accumulation, proliferation, and d

Melatonin as Protection Against Radiation Injury: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation is widely used in the treatment of various cancers and in radiological imaging procedures. Ionizing radiation causes adverse effects, leading to decreased quality of life in patients, by releasing free radicals that cause oxidative stress and tissue damage. The sleep-hormone melatonin is a free radical scavenger, and induces several anti-oxidative enzymes. This review investigates the scientific literature on the protective effects of melatonin against exposure to ionizing radiation, and discusses the clinical potential of melatonin as prophylactic treatment against ion

Radiation induced lung injury: prediction, assessment and management.

Radiation induced lung injury has long been considered a treatment limiting factor for patients requiring thoracic radiation. This radiation induced lung injury happens early as well as late. Radiation induced lung injury can occur in two phases viz. early (<6 months) when it is called radiation pneumonitis and late (>6 months) when it is called radiation induced lung fibrosis. There are multiple factors that can be patient, disease or treatment related that predict the incidence and severity of radiation pneumonitis. Radiation induced damage to the type I pneumocytes is the triggering factor

Hematopoietic stem cell injury induced by ionizing radiation.

SIGNIFICANCE: Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) as the result of nuclear accidents or terrorist attacks is a significant threat and a major medical concern. Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) injury is the primary cause of death after accidental or intentional exposure to a moderate or high dose of IR. Protecting HSCs from IR should be a primary goal in the development of novel medical countermeasures against radiation. RECENT ADVANCES: Significant progress has been made in our understanding of the mechanisms by which IR causes HSC damage. The mechanisms include (i) induction of HSC apoptosis vi
