Practical recommendations for the management of radiodermatitis: on behalf of the ESTRO RTT committee.

BACKGROUND: There is a substantial body of literature addressing the prevention, acute management, and follow-up care of radiation induced dermatitis (RID). The quality and application of this evidence, however, is inconsistent and its interpretation varies widely. While several national guidelines have been developed to standardise practices locally, many of these resources are not publicly available. On behalf of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) Radiation Therapist (RTT) Committee, an international writing group consisting of 12 experts from radiotherapy and two pat

Association of Skin Microbiome Dynamics With Radiodermatitis in Patients With Breast Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: The interindividual differences in severity of acute radiation dermatitis are not well understood. To date, the pathomechanism and interplay of microbiome and radiodermatitis before and during treatment remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of skin microbiome baseline composition and dynamics with severity of radiodermatitis in patients undergoing adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A longitudinal prospective pilot observational study was conducted between January 2017 and January 2019. Sequencing results were receive…

Individual Radiosensitivity as a Risk Factor for the Radiation-Induced Acute Radiodermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Up to 95% of irradiated patients suffer from ionizing radiation (IR) induced early skin reaction, acute radiation dermatitis (ARD). Some experts think that additional skin hydration can reduce acute skin reactions. Individual radiosensitivity (IRS) determined from lymphocytes may help to predict acute radiation toxicity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical manifestation of ARD in different skincare groups during whole breast radiotherapy depending on IRS and other risk factors. METHODS: A total of 108 early-stage breast cancer patients were randomized into best s

Herbal Medicines for Treatment of Radiodermatitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: There is some evidence in favor of the efficacy of herbal medicine in the treatment of radiodermatitis as a frequent complication among cancer patients. Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of herbal medicines on the treatment of radiodermatitis in cancer patients. Study design: Systematic review performed in accordance with the PRISMA guideline. Methods: We searched the electronic databases, Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Google Scholar, and ISI Web of Science, through July 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared herbal compounds ag…

Expression profiling of radiation-induced genes in radiodermatitis of hairless mice.

BACKGROUND: Radiation induces many cellular events leading to radiodermatitis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to establish a radiodermatitis model using experimental animals, and to examine the expression profile of radiation-induced genes. METHODS: Hairless mice were irradiated on the dorsal skin; then total RNAs were isolated and microarray hybridizations were performed. RESULTS: Irradiation with a total of 40 Gy (10 Gy day-1 for four consecutive days) provokes radiodermatitis in the hairless mouse. After microarray analysis, 130 genes that showed upregulation by radiation were sel…

[Radiodermatitis in interventional radiology (hand dose measurement, screening and compensation)].

It is to be feared that the expansion of interventional radiology could lead to the reappearance of chronic radiodermatitis. Only a few studies mention the doses received by the hands, however these radiation doses are always high. Whereas clinical examinations lead to a belated diagnosis, capillary microscopy, a quick and non invasive test, enables to detect vascular injuries at the subclinical stage. Radiological protection is currently based on leaded gloves and on the reduction of exposure duration. Compensation for chronic radiodermatitis depends on the practitioner's status. In spite of …

Association between ineffective health self-management and severe radiodermatitis: Cohort study.

PURPOSE: To verify the association of the nursing diagnosis (ND) Ineffective Health Self-Management (IHS) (00276) with severe radiodermatitis in individuals with anal and/or rectal canal cancer. METHODS: Cohort study, secondary to a clinical trial. Data were extracted from 57 participants undergoing radiotherapy (RT) for anal and/or rectal cancer so that a panel of experts could assess the presence of the defined characteristics and the ND of IHS. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed. Univariate analyses and bivariate analyses were applied using Fisher's exact test a…

Engineered Microalgal Extracellular Vesicles for Enhancing Mitochondrial Homeostasis in Radiodermatitis Prevention.

Radiodermatitis, one of the most prevalent side effects of cancer radiotherapy, is characterized by cellular oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and inflammatory responses. In this study, we isolated extracellular vesicles (EVs) from the natural microalgae Spirulina platensis (SP) and engineered them by loading astaxanthin (AST) into SP-EVs, resulting in the formation of SP-EVs@AST. This engineered system significantly enhanced the solubility and stability of AST while preserving the structural integrity and biological activity of SP-EVs, thereby enabling the complementary and synergistic …

[Chronic radiodermatitis after heart catheterization: the contributing role of ciprofibrate (Lipanor)?].

BACKGROUND: Radiodermatitis after cardiac catheterization procedures has been reported in only a few cases in the literature. This side effect may not however be uncommon after long or repeated endocavitary explorations. CASE REPORT: We observed a case of chronic radiodermatitis which developed after cardiac catheterization, in a patient treated with corticosteroids and ciprofibrate for lupus. The patient had undergone only one heart catheterization. A second catheterization performed when the patient had stopped ciprofibrate did not provoke new lesions. DISCUSSION: This observations would s…

Therapeutic potential of phytoconstituents in oncocosmetics: A systematic review on radiodermatitis management.

ObjectiveThe article explores phytoconstituents as alternatives to corticosteroids for radiodermatitis, emphasizing antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It summarizes recent research on phytoconstituents mitigating radiation-induced skin damage and contributing to "oncocosmetics" development for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.Data SourcesScientific literature was reviewed, including studies on radiodermatitis symptoms, phytoconstituent mechanisms, and their effectiveness in treating radiation-induced skin injuries. Search criteria included peer-reviewed articl…
