[Vitamin A deficiency and xerophtalmia].

OBJECTIVE: To review cases of vitamin A deficiency and the effects of vitamin A supplementation on child morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Articles published in scientific journals, technical and scientific books, and also publications by international organizations were used as source of information. RESULTS: Clinical manifestations of xerophthalmia affect the retina (night blindness), the conjunctiva (conjunctival xerosis, with or without Bitot spots), and the cornea (corneal xerosis). Corneal xerosis may lead to corneal ulceration and liquefactive necrosis (keratomalacia). A priori, these s

The ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the genus Hericium.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Mushrooms in the genus Hericium are used as functional food and traditional medicines for a long history in East Asian countries such as China, India, Japan, and Korea. Some species of Hericium are called as monkey head mushroom (Houtougu) in China and Yamabushitake in Japan, which are traditionally considered as rare and precious health promoting food and medicinal materials for the treatment of dyspepsia, insomnia, chronic gastritis, and digestive tract tumors. THE AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review aims to summarize the ethnopharmacology and structural diversity

Ultrastructure of skin from Refsum disease with emphasis on epidermal lamellar bodies and stratum corneum barrier lipid organization.

Classic Refsum disease (RD) is a rare, autosomal recessively-inherited disorder of peroxisome metabolism due to a defect in the initial step in the alpha oxidation of phytanic acid (PA), a C16 saturated fatty acid with four methyl side groups, which accumulates in plasma and lipid enriched tissues (please see van den Brink and Wanders, Cell Mol Life Sci 63:1752-1765, 2006). It has been proposed that the disease complex in RD is in part due to the high affinity of phytanic acid for retinoid X receptors and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors. Structurally, epidermal hyperplasia, increas

Prenatal Diagnosis of Craniorachischisis Totalis Following an Initially Normal First-Trimester Ultrasound in a Woman With Two Previous Caesarean Births: A Case Report.

Craniorachischisis totalis is the most severe form of open neural tube defect and combines acrania/anencephaly with extensive open spinal dysraphism. It is rare, lethal, and usually identifiable prenatally, but diagnostic labeling may evolve across pregnancy as imaging findings become clearer. We report the case of a 33-year-old multiparous woman, gravida 4 para 2+1, with two previous caesarean births, whose booking ultrasound at 8 weeks and 4 days of amenorrhea showed a single live intrauterine embryo with no documented structural abnormality. She later underwent targeted fetal anomaly scanni

Double faces of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma-a review of integrated pathologic diagnosis.

Pheochromocytoma (PCC) and paraganglioma (PGL) are tumors of the adrenal medulla and sympathetic and parasympathetic paraganglia. Both PCC and PGL (PPGLs) are included in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of dispersed neuroendocrine system. The most important issue on PPGLs for pathology has been how to differentiate malignant from benign PPGLs, and the previous articles concentrated on solving this difficult issue. However, the concept of PPGLs was dramatically changed by WHO Blue Book, 4th edition (2017), in which all PPGLs have some metastatic potential, therefore, the previous categories of ben

[Legal Degree of Disability in Childhood-Craniopharyngioma Survivors During Long-Term Follow-Up].

BACKGROUND: Cranioparyngiomas are rare low-grade embryonic malformational tumors of the sellar/parasellar region. The prognosis after diagnosis during childood and adolescence is influenced by (neuro)endocrine long-term sequelae. A legal status of the degree of disability (GdB), according to the German Social Code Book V that is worthy of support provides financial means for psychosocial integration and participation of craniopharyngioma survivors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: HIT-Endo is a German registry study on craniopharyngioma patients aged≤18 years at diagnosis . In a sample of 108 patients,

Update from the 5th Edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumors: Hypopharynx, Larynx, Trachea and Parapharyngeal Space.

In this article, we review the chapter on tumors of the larynx, hypopharynx, trachea and parapharyngeal space in the new edition of the WHO book, focusing on the new developments in comparison to the previous edition. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its variants are by far the most common malignancies at these locations, with very limited new insights. The most important is the introduction of new targeted treatment-checkpoint inhibitors, with a new task for pathologists, who may help to predict the response to treatment by analyzing the expression of targeted proteins in biopsy samples. Pre

Discordant Congenital Toxoplasmosis and Cytomegalovirus Infection in Dichorionic Diamniotic Twins.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis and cytomegalovirus (CMV) congenital infection present with similar clinical pictures. Both infections have long-term sequelae that can be mitigated by early detection and treatment. Coinfection is uncommonly reported. METHODS: Dichorionic diamniotic twins born at 35 weeks of gestation were investigated for congenital infections due to abnormalities on the antenatal scan at 31 weeks of gestation. Antenatal investigations were delayed due to late booking and delay in maternal investigations. In the neonatal period, they suffered discordant symptoms and were both inves

Modified and new approaches for pelvic and acetabular surgery.

We analysed outcomes of new operative techniques for open reduction and internal fixation in 120 consecutive patients with fractures of the pelvic ring and 164 patients with acetabular fractures treated between 1989 and 1999. An anterior extraperitoneal approach was performed through a low midline incision to fix the anterior and lateral parts of the pelvis and for central involvement of different types of acetabular fractures. The anterior approach was combined with a lateral incision on the lateral crest for fractures of the iliac wing and with a posterior approach for sacroiliac injuries, o

Pitfalls in diagnosing Gallbladder Carcinoma - A Single Center Histopathology Study.

Background Gallbladder carcinoma is a rare cancer with incidence of less than 2 per 100,000 populations worldwide. It is the fifth most frequent gastrointestinal malignancy. Radiological or gross examination of majority of gallbladder carcinoma detects no mass. This may lead to under or over diagnosis of cases in histological examination. Objective To identify pathologic features that contribute to the difficulty in diagnosis of gallbladder carcinoma. Method Between 2018 and 2023, 22 patients with gallbladder carcinoma were identified using the histopathology registry book at the department of

The Brain-Face Connection in Holoprosencephaly: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a congenital brain malformation caused by the incomplete division of the forebrain during early embryogenesis. It results in a spectrum of structural abnormalities, ranging from alobar to lobar forms, and milder, more difficult to diagnose variants. Alobar HPE is often associated with midline craniofacial defects due to shared developmental origins. Both malformations are amenable at the first trimester anomaly scan. Case report and systematic review: We present a late diagnosed and complex case, subject of major obstetric complications. Th

Four cases of sodium nitrite suicidal ingestion: A new trend and a relevant Forensic Pathology and Toxicology challenge.

Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is an inorganic compound commonly used as a food additive, antifreeze admixture, and fertilizer. Its toxicity mechanism is mainly represented by the oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron of one of the four heme structures in haemoglobin with the onset of methaemoglobin. The mechanism of death by sodium nitrite toxicity is severe hypoxia. We present four cases of suicidal sodium nitrite ingestion that closely occurred within a two months-period. Self-poisoning with sodium nitrite actually represents an increasing trend in nitrates' related deaths. In order to reach a p

Schizophrenia vs. encephalitis: A neuropsychological case study.

From presenting with flu-like symptoms, seizures, and erratic behaviour including hallucinations, to being dismissed as "partying too much" and misdiagnosed with schizophrenia before the ultimate provision of a neurological explanation - encephalitis; this was a true sequence of events for the 24 year old female, Susannah Cahalan, who suddenly became ill with a mysterious illness that was misdiagnosed even after extensive evaluation until a neurologist was able to diagnose and effectively treat her (Cahalan, 2012; Barrett, 2016). Susannah's case bemused the medical field and became the plot of

Peduncular hallucinosis after a thalamic stroke.

Peduncular hallucinosis is a rare form of hallucinations consisting of vivid and nonthreatening colourful visual hallucinations. It was first described by French neurologist Jean Lhermitte in 1922. It sometimes includes distorted images of animals and people. Peduncular hallucinosis has been described after vascular and infective lesions of the mesencephalon and thalamus. We present a case of peduncular hallucinosis after a right thalamic infarction. This is a case of a 75-year-old Caucasian man with a previous medical history of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia who presented as a transfer from

Using ICPC-2 Standard to Identify Thai Zingiberaceae of Pharmacological Interest.

The Economic Botany Data Collection Standard (EBDCS) is a widely used standard among ethnobotanists. However, this standard classifies ethnomedicinal uses into categories based on local peoples' perception. It is difficult to apply in pharmacological research. The International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC), now updated to ICPC-2, is more related to medical terms, but is rarely used among ethnobotanists. This study aims to apply the ICPC-2 to classify metadata of the ethnomedicinal uses of Zingiberaceae plants in Thailand, in order to identify important medicinal taxa for future resear

Berengario's drill: origin and inspiration.

Craniotomies are among the oldest neurosurgical procedures, as evidenced by early human skulls discovered with holes in the calvaria. Though devices change, the principles to safely transgress the skull are identical. Modern neurosurgeons regularly use electric power drills in the operating theater; however, nonelectric trephining instruments remain trusted by professionals in certain emergent settings in the rare instance that an electric drill is unavailable. Until the late Middle Ages, innovation in craniotomy instrumentation remained stunted without much documented redesign. Jacopo Berenga
