Limited resources result in competition among social animals. Nevertheless, social animals also have innate preferences for cooperative behavior. In the present study, 12 dyads of food-deprived rats were tested in four successive trials, and then re-tested as eight triads of food-deprived rats that were unfamiliar to each other. OBJECTIVE: We previously demonstrated that obesity caused the reduction of peripheral and brain insulin sensitivity and that estrogen therapy improved these defects. However, the beneficial effect of estrogen on brain insulin sensitivity and oxidative stress in either ovariectomy alone or ovariectomy with obesity models has not been determined. We report three tumours arising in the brain stem or adjacent cranial nerves of the Alderly Park rat. Light microscopy with special stains, immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy supported the conclusion that both neuronal and myoid differentiation occurred in all neoplasms. This was shown by the presence in neural cells of axon-like cell processes and in myoblastic cells of striated myofibrils. Although medulloblastomas occur in man and rats the tumours reported here were not related to the cerebellum. We have termed this tumour neuromyoblastoma.

A high incidence of spontaneous, non-acute, age-dependent prostatitis was observed in the lateral prostate of Copenhagen rats and Wistar rats.
