Spontaneous thymoma was observed with an incidence of 97 and 36% in female and male rats, respectively, from an inbred Wistar/Neuherberg strain (W/Nhg). The thymomas often caused dyspnea and were occasionally the direct cause of death. Wistar-Furth (WF) strain rats have been shown to have a high incidence of spontaneous colon cancer. The investigations focused on tapeworms obtained as a result of the administration to individual rats a dose of 6 cysticercoids coming from the 39th and 40th generation of one-specimen inbred Hymenolepis diminuta-WMS il1. In 7.5-month old tapeworms the position of genital pores (PGP) was exclusively right-hand side with the genital ducts typical of this feature. Type Op3a proglottids were the most common deviation from the typical number and topography of testes-1p2a (one testis between the ovary and the genital pore marking the poral side and two testes on the aporal side)-in such tapeworms.

The Lou/C rat, an inbred strain of Wistar origin, is presented both as an obesity-resistant rat and as a relevant model of successful ageing. In the present study, we examined throughout ageing the breathing pattern and the ventilatory response to hypoxia in Lou/C and age-matched Wistar rats. Ventilation was assessed by whole body plethysmography in resting condition and during a hypoxic challenge (10% O(2)) at 2, 6, 12 and 24 months of age. Lou/C rats maintained constant their resting ventilation rate throughout ageing while Wistar rats tended to decrease their ventilation with advancing age.

Sex-based differences in susceptibility have been reported for a number of neovascular ocular diseases. We quantified corneal neovascularization, induced by superficial silver nitrate cautery, in male and female inbred albino Sprague-Dawley, inbred albino Fischer 344, outbred pigmented Hooded Wistar and inbred pigmented Dark Agouti rats of a range of ages. Corneal neovascular area was quantified on haematoxylin-stained corneal flatmounts by image analysis. Pro-and anti-angiogenic gene expression was measured early in the neovascular response by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.
