Neurorespiratory pattern of gill and lung ventilation in the decerebrate spontaneously breathing tadpole.

A decerebrate, spontaneously breathing tadpole preparation (Taylor-Kollros stages 16-19) was used to test the general hypothesis that the efferent bursting activities of cranial nerves (CN) V, VII and spinal nerve (SN) II are respiratory in nature, and, in particular, to identify separate and specific neural correlates of gill and lung ventilation. Oropharyngeal pressure (POP), intrapulmonary pressure (PIP), electromyogram (EMG) of the buccal levator muscle (interhyoideus), and efferent neural activities of CN V, CN VII and SN II were recorded while the animal was exposed to hyperoxia (100% in

Monothermal differential caloric testing in patients with Menière's disease.

The monothermal differential caloric test allows determination of vestibular recruitment and decruitment, variables which may help discriminate peripheral from central vestibular lesions. Previous reports indicated a strong association between vestibular recruitment and Menière's disease. This study examined patients having unilateral Menière's disease. Nystagmus beat frequency (NBF) and slow-component velocity (SCV) responses were recorded by electronystagmography (ENG). Electronystagmographic findings showing unilateral dysfunction were present in 54% of patients by slow-component velocity a

Effects of procaine hydrochloride, diazepam, and diphenylhydantoin on seizure development in cortical and subcortical structures in rats.

Procaine HCl and diphenylhydantoin (DPH) increased the duration and propagation of epileptiform afterdischarges (ADs) produced by electrical stimulation of the amygdala in rats. Procaine and DPH also increased the rate of seizure development (kindling) produced by repeated stimulation of the amygdala. Procaine and to a limited extentDPH would themselves act as convulsants in well kindled subjects. Diazepam, on the other hand, retarded or blocked amygdaloid kindling. Diazepam trigered a high frequency (20-30 c/sec) rhtthm in the amygdala, hippocampus and preoptic area. None of these drugs had a

Shifting visual perspective during retrieval shapes autobiographical memories.

The dynamic and flexible nature of memories is evident in our ability to adopt multiple visual perspectives. Although autobiographical memories are typically encoded from the visual perspective of our own eyes they can be retrieved from the perspective of an observer looking at our self. Here, we examined the neural mechanisms of shifting visual perspective during long-term memory retrieval and its influence on online and subsequent memories using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants generated specific autobiographical memories from the last five years and rated their vis

Initial motor unit recruitment in patients with spastic hemiplegia.

Lesions of the first motor neuron provoke abnormal voluntary movements. To clarify the central nervous system mechanisms underlying these changes we analyzed the behavior of the first motor unit recruited during a minimal effort tonic contraction of the deltoid and abductor digiti minimi manus muscles in patients with hemiplegia due to cerebrovascular lesions in the distribution of the middle cerebral artery. We compared data from paretic and healthy muscles in the same subject. The onset and recruitment intervals determined for the single motor unit yielded the range of control. The first rec

Changes in breathing and ventilatory muscle recruitment patterns induced by lung volume reduction surgery.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have abnormal breathing and ventilatory muscle recruitment patterns at rest and during exercise, and these alterations may contribute to the limited exercise capacity seen in this disease. Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS), a recently described treatment for emphysema, is reported to improve exercise performance. We studied the breathing and ventilatory muscle recruitment (VMR) patterns in eight patients with severe chronic obstructive lung disease (median FEV1 = 0.79 L, range 0.46 to 1.13 L) by measuring esophageal and gastric pressure me

Pure stimulus-sensitive truncal myoclonus of propriospinal origin.

The clinical and electrophysiological features of stimulus-sensitive truncal myoclonus are described in a 49-year-old woman. Touching the skin of the back and abdomen would evoke jerks in both ipsilateral and contralateral axial muscles; there was no spontaneous jerking. Multichannel EMG recordings showed bilateral short-latency muscle bursts at truncal recording sites both rostral and caudal to stimulus sites. The short latencies of muscle bursts in adjacent segments give evidence of a spinal origin of myoclonus; the pattern of recruitment and the velocity of spread suggest the involvement of

Integral storage and voiding reflexes. Neurophysiologic concept of continence and micturition.

It is a common clinical misconception to regard the spinal micturition reflex center as fundamentally overactive and dependent on cerebral inhibition. Initiation and cessation of micturition is simplistically viewed as a manifestation of voluntary withdrawal and resumption of inhibitory corticospinal "regulation''. This view is in conflict with basic neurophysiologic experimental data. Actually, the organization of the micturition reflex is extremely complex. It is affected by multiple sources of facilitative and inhibitory influence, peripheral as well as central. During the past half century

A parietal-to-frontal shift in the P300 is associated with compensation of tactile discrimination deficits in late middle-aged adults.

Tactile perception declines with age on both behavioral and neurophysiological levels. Less well understood is how neurophysiological changes relate to tactile discrimination performance in middle adulthood. A tactile discrimination task was conducted while ERPs were measured in three groups of healthy adults aged 20 to 66 years. Accuracy was lowest in late middle adulthood (56-66 years) while somatosensory ERP components (P50, N70, P100, N140) were comparable across age groups. The cognitive P300 revealed age-related differences in scalp distribution typical for older adults to already be pre

Electrophysiological assessment of motor unit loss in adult spinal muscular atrophy types III and IV: a multicenter national study comparing MUNIX, CMAP, and MUSIX.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) types III and IV are the most common late-onset forms, and they progress slowly, making the identification of sensitive biomarkers critical. The Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX) estimates motor unit loss and may complement traditional electrophysiological measurements such as Compound Muscle Action Potential amplitudes (CMAP). However, their respective performances have never been directly compared in adult SMA. METHODS: In a French multicenter study (NCT04690998), 71 adult patients with SMA and 24 healthy controls underwent clinical and electrophysiol

Specific recruitment properties of spinal reflex of thigh muscle in sprinter.

Thigh muscles activation pattern plays a key role in high-performance sprint running. We investigated spinal neural mechanisms underlying sprinters' specific thigh muscle control by examining spinal reflex recruitment properties and reciprocal inhibition of the thigh muscles in sprinters. Ten high-level national sprinters and ten controls participated in this study. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) was used to evoke spinal reflexes in biceps femoris (BF) and soleus (SOL) muscles. To assess the recruitment properties of thigh muscles, in Experiment 1, tSCS was applied at varying in

Modular motor control of the sound limb in gait of people with trans-femoral amputation.

BACKGROUND: The above-knee amputation of a lower limb is a severe impairment that affects significantly the ability to walk; considering this, a complex adaptation strategy at the neuromuscular level is needed in order to be able to move safely with a prosthetic knee. In literature, it has been demonstrated that muscle activity during walking can be described via the activation of a small set of muscle synergies. The analysis of the composition and the time activation profiles of such synergies have been found to be a valid tool for the description of the motor control schemes in pathological

Motor unit recruitment in myopathy: The myopathic EMG reconsidered.

Motor unit recruitment is abnormal in myopathies. We have addressed this subject by recording motor unit potentials (MUPs) using a standard concentric needle electrode in tibialis anterior muscles of clinically normal strength in a group of patients with myopathy (15 with myositis and 4 with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy Type 1). In each recording site, a minimal voluntary contraction was sought in order to activate only 2 MUPs. At least 5 pairs of MUPs were recorded in each muscle. We analysed the recruitment rate of the first activated MUP and the mean consecutive difference (MCD) o

Neural correlates of emotion acceptance vs worry or suppression in generalized anxiety disorder.

Recent emotion dysregulation models of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) propose chronic worry in GAD functions as a maladaptive attempt to regulate anxiety related to uncertain or unpredictable outcomes. Emotion acceptance is an adaptive emotion regulation strategy increasingly incorporated into newer cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches to GAD to counter chronic worry. The current study explores the mechanisms of emotion acceptance as an alternate emotion regulation strategy to worry or emotion suppression using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Twenty-one female participants

The influence of prolonged vibration on motor unit behavior.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of vibration (VIB) on motor unit (MU) behavior of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle during a 40% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). METHODS: Eleven healthy (age 21.3 ± 2.6 years) individuals participated in the study. Surface electromyography (EMG) data were recorded from the VL during isometric trapezoidal muscle contractions at 40% MVC. Firing events of single MUs and EMG amplitude were reported for the first, middle, and final seconds of a 12-second steady force segment at 40% MVC. VIB was applied at 55 Hz to the patella

Burst-Modulated Waveforms Optimize Electrical Stimuli for Charge Efficiency and Fiber Selectivity.

We demonstrate an alternative method of designing electrical stimuli-termed burst modulation--for producing different patterns of nerve fiber recruitment. By delivering electrical charge in bursts of "pulsons"--miniature pulses-instead of as long continuous pulses, our method can optimize the waveform for stimulation efficiency and fiber selectivity. In our in vivo validation experiments, while maintaining C fibers of the rat vagus nerve at ∼ 50% activation with different waveforms, the burst-modulated waveform produced 11% less A fiber activation than the standard rectangular pulse waveform (

MEP recruitment curves in multiple sclerosis and hereditary spastic paraplegia.

OBJECTIVE: Axons remodel at multiple levels after a single inflammatory lesion in the spinal cord, which can contribute to recovery. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether the MEP response as function of the excitatory strength, here called recruitment curves, may be used in discriminating demyelination from compensated axonal loss. Multiple sclerosis (MS) represents both demyelination and axonal degeneration. Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) was included as a model of pure axonal loss. METHODS: To investigate both spinal and cortical recruitment, the methods used for gra
