Poor diet is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases including cancer. Understanding broader contextual factors that influence dietary intake is important for making tangible progress towards improving diet at the population level. This study investigated neighbourhood social and built environment factors and fruit and vegetable intake among ~28,000 adults aged 35−69 years within the BC Generations Project. Daily fruit and vegetable intake was categorized according to guidelines (≥5 servings/day vs. <5 servings/day). Geospatial characteristics included walkability, greenness, marginaliza

Aim: Promoting walking activity is an effective way to improve the health of older adults. Walking frequency is a critical component of walking behavior and an essential determinant of daily walking levels. To decipher the association between the built environment and walking frequency among older adults, this study's aims are as follows: (1) to empirically test whether non-linear relationships between the two exist, and (2) to identify the thresholds of the built environment characteristics that promote walking. Methods: The walking frequency of old adults was derived from the Zhongshan House

Poor peri-urban sanitation is a significant public health problem, likely to become more important as the world rapidly urbanizes. However, little is known about the role of consumer demand in increasing peri-urban sanitation quality, especially for tenants using shared sanitation as only their rental choices can be observed in the market. We analyzed data on existing housing markets collected between 9 Jun and 6 Jul 2017 using the Hedonic Pricing Method (HPM) to capture the percentage of rent attributable to sanitation quality (n = 933). We also conducted discrete choice experiments (DCEs) to

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the direct and indirect effects of family characteristics and the perceived neighborhood environment on obesity risks among schoolchildren.
METHODS: Through phone contact with the child's mothers/guardians, the perceptions about the aspects of the neighborhood that could limit or promote health. Physical activity, socioeconomic data, self-reported weight and height, and ultra-processed consumption of the respondents were evaluated, in addition to the screen time of both mothers and children. A hybrid model of structural equations was used to test the direct and indirec

ISSUES: Drug consumption rooms (DCR) are implemented in part to reduce the impacts of active drug markets in their immediate vicinity. This scoping review sought to document the concepts and indicators used to describe the impact of DCRs on the nearby neighbourhood.
APPROACH: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed and grey literature, focusing on evaluations of DCRs and related neighbourhood impacts. Articles were included if they contained research looking at operational DCRs and their impact on the surrounding neighbourhood, available in full text and in English. Four databases (Med

Objectives: To investigate the longitudinal association of life space and neighborhood and built environment (NBE) with subjective memory among individuals 65 and older, and the mediating role of depressive symptoms, a major correlate of life space mobility, NBE, and subjective memory. Methods: We examined community-dwelling participants in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly study (N = 2,622, Mean age = 73.7 years, 24.9% Black) across annual assessments of up to 3 years. Results: Baseline life space and NBE were positively associated with subjective memory, and t

(1) Background: Although several neighborhood environmental factors have been identified to be associated with older adults' physical activity, little research has been done in rural areas where the population is aging. This study aimed to investigate neighborhood environmental factors and the longitudinal change of physical activity status among rural older adults in Japan. (2) Methods: The study included 2211 older adults, aged over 60 years, residing in three municipalities in Shimane prefecture and participating at least twice in annual health checkups between 2010 and 2019. The reentry process from prison to the community is rife with obstacles. Substance use problems, in particular, can present significant barriers to successful reentry. However, little research has examined the various roles that substance use plays during reentry from the perspective of those reentering the community. The current study explores reentry experiences of people who have been recently released from prison with a specific focus on their experiences with substance use during the reentry process. Using thematic analysis, the present study explored substance use experiences from 26 sem

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have examined the association between safety and primary school-aged children's forms of active mobility. However, variations in studies' measurement methods and the elements addressed have contributed to inconsistencies in research outcomes, which may be forming a barrier to advancing researchers' knowledge about this field. To assess where current research stands, we have synthesised the methodological measures in studies that examined the effects of neighbourhood safety exposure (perceived and measured) on children's outdoor active mobility behaviour and used th

More and more old people live alone, and living alone is reported to be a key risk factor for experiencing loneliness and developing poor health. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of living alone for older men. Systematic text condensation and hermeneutic interpretation were used in analysis of the data. Four themes emerged: lonely at times, missing and longing for a shared life, keeping active, and some kind of freedom. The findings revealed that inner and outer resources come into play and have influence on the processes of managing and solving the situatio

BACKGROUND: Urban blue-green environments are vital components of the urban exposome, shaping daily opportunities for physical activity, stress mitigation, and broader public health. However, these benefits depend on daily accessibility. In compact coastal metropolises, extensive nature may coexist with highly unequal residential access. This study investigates whether socially vulnerable residential areas in Shenzhen experience reduced exposure to public green and coastal blue spaces.
METHODS: Using 4,071 residential patches, a residential-scale exposure framework was developed. Social vulne

OBJECTIVE: Zoning codes influence the built environments of communities in the United States (U.S.), which in turn have potential to promote social connections. This study assessed associations between code reform zoning (CRZ) and activity-oriented zoning (AOZ) exposure and perceived neighborhood social connectedness and whether these associations were mediated by walkability and park coverage.
METHODS: Data from the Current Population Survey September 2019 Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement were linked to U.S. county-level data on (1) population-level exposure to CRZ and an index of 10 A

Background Behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are prevalent among the urban poor in Nepal. Understanding environmental factors such as the availability of retailers selling tobacco, alcohol, and junk food, as well as neighbourhood access to and the built environment's support for physical activity is critical for addressing the rising burden of cardiovascular disease in the community. Objective To identify aspects of the community environment that contribute to behavioral risk factors, focusing on the food supply system, built environment, walkability, and the marketing, avail

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a

BACKGROUND: Early exposure to neighborhood social fragmentation has been shown to be associated with schizophrenia. The impact of social fragmentation and friendships on distressing psychotic-like experiences (PLE) remains unknown. We investigate the relationships between neighborhood social fragmentation, number of friends, and distressing PLE among early adolescents.
METHODS: Data were collected from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Generalized linear mixed models tested associations between social fragmentation and distressing PLE, as well as the moderating role of the num

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury is not evenly distributed by race and class in the USA. Black men are marginalized in the society, often reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and are at higher risk for injury mortality and ongoing physical and psychological problems following injury. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depressive symptom severity are among several problematic and disabling conditions faced by injury survivors. While much research has examined individual factors that lead to increased post-injury psychological symptom severity, the contribution of the social and physical en
