OBJECTIVE: This article discusses how ribs are involved in a variety of traumatic, metabolic, inflammatory, neoplastic, and congenital disorders.
CONCLUSION: We review the normal anatomy pertinent to rib imaging and illustrate the key features of a variety of rib lesions, emphasizing the diagnostic value of CT.

Rib fractures are the most common serious injury of the chest. They occur most commonly in the middle and lower ribs with blunt trauma, and also with direct force to a small area of the chest wall and violent muscle contractions. Diagnosis is generally not difficult. The athlete should have a chest x-ray to confirm the diagnosis. Differential diagnosis includes severe rib contusion, costochondral separations, muscle strains and pneumothorax. Fifteen cases of isolated fracture of the first rib are submitted. The mechanism of the fracture is discussed. It proved compatible with the descriptions in the literature, caused either by direct trauma to the shoulder, a sudden violent contraction of juxtacostal muscles; or else it was a chance finding, without any history of trauma and as such interpreted as a fatigue fracture. A case of Horner's syndrome complicating a fracture of the first rib is also described.

A 32-year-old man was treated in our unit (Tuen Mun Hospital, Hong Kong, China), for a chest wall tumor. He had initially presented to another center because of right-sided chest pain. Computed tomography detected a chest wall mass with invasion to his ribs. He was given a diagnosis of immunoglobulin G4-related disease and was started on immunosuppression. The therapy of rib fractures is controversially discussed. Neither does an osteosynthesis have to be performed for each individual rib fracture, nor is the internal splinting by ventilation or respiratory therapy sufficient for each patient. Pelvic rib is a rare anomaly where ectopic rib is found in a pelvic region. It is usually found occasionally in asymptomatic patients. We report a case of 15-year-old male, diagnosed with a symptomatic pelvic rib. It had an unusual presentation creating a pseudotumour associated with pain and reduced range of motion in the hip joint. Patient was operated on with good result and final diagnosis was confirmed in pathological examination. (Folia Morphol 2018; 77, 2: 406-408).

Solitary plasmacytoma of the bone, and especially of a single rib, is a rare disease. Here we report a 73-year old male patient complaining of continuous chest wall pain around the right 5th rib shaft who underwent a wide excision of the rib tumor with surrounding connective tissue. He was diagnosed with solitary plasmacytoma and will undergo radiation therapy. We report this case with a review of the literature.
