Demography, reproductive biology and diet of the bushveld gerbil Tatera leucogaster (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) in the Lake Rukwa valley, south-western Tanzania.

Seasonal abundance, reproductive biology and feeding ecology of the bushveld gerbil Tatera leucogaster (Peters, 1852) were investigated in small-scale maize field-fallow land mosaics in south-western Tanzania. The gerbils were collected over a 2-year period using Sherman live and Victor hold-fast snap traps in permanent 4.5-ha grids. A total of 664 individuals were captured over 13 650 trap nights, giving an overall trap success rate of 4.9%. Trap success varied between seasons with and without crops in the field but not between habitat types. At this site, the breeding activity of this specie

Intestinal Life Cycle of Eimeria caliginosa (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) From the Dusky Rice Rat, Melanomys caliginosus (Rodentia: Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae), In Costa Rica.

The endogenous life cycle of Eimeria caliginosa was studied in experimentally infected dusky rice rats, Melanomys caliginosus. All endogenous stages were located in the epithelial cells of villi in the small intestine. Both Giemsa-stained mucosal scrapings and histological sections were studied for the diagnosis of all the life-cycle stages. Eimeria caliginosa has 3 generations of meronts (M) that differ by size, shape, and number of merozoites (m), which also differ in their size, shape, and location of their nuclei within the cytoplasm of the meronts. The 3 meront types, M1-M3, respectively,

Musserakis sulawesiensis gen. et sp. n. (Nematoda: Heterakidae) collected from Echiothrix centrosa (Rodentia: Muridae), an old endemic rat of Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Musserakis sulawesiensis gen. et sp. n. (Nematoda: Heterakidae) is described from the large-bodied shrew rat, Echiothrix centrosa, one of the old endemic rats of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Musserakis is readily distinguished from other heterakid genera by having non-recurrent and non-anastomosing cephalic cordons, by lacking papillae between papillae groups around precloacal sucker and cloacal aperture and by lacking teeth in the pharyngeal portion. The spicules are equal but with marked dimorphism among individuals. Heterakids collected from other old endemic murids examined, i.e., Crunomys celeben

Analysis of gamasid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) associated with the Asian house rat, Rattus tanezumi (Rodentia: Muridae) in Yunnan Province, southwest China.

During a survey lasting from 1990 to 2008, we captured 4,113 Asian house rats, Rattus tanezumi Temminck 1844 (Rodentia: Muridae) from 28 counties of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. From these rats, a total of 19,304 gamasid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) were collected and identified as comprising 50 different species. The species diversity of gamasid mites from this single rat species is higher than that reported previously from multiple hosts within a given geographical region. Of the 50 mite species, 31 species belonged to ectoparasites and 19 species belonged to free-living mites. The …

Laboratory techniques for rearing the fleas (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae and Pulicidae) of California ground squirrels (Rodentia: Sciuridae) using a novel nest box.

Three species of fleas, Oropsylla montana (Baker), Hoplopsyllus anomalus (Baker), and Echidnophaga gallinacea (Westwood), occur seasonally on the California ground squirrel, Spermophilus beecheyi (Richardson). Few studies have focused on the biology and ecology of these fleas despite their importance in the epidemiology of sylvatic plague. To best duplicate a natural parasite-host relationship in the laboratory, a novel nest box was developed that facilitated housing wild-caught S. beecheyi, was conducive to rearing fleas, and met modern standards for laboratory animal hygiene. This flexible s

First record of Sigmodon minor (Rodentia) in the early Blancan of central Mexico: Asymmetrical dispersal from the Great Plains and paleoecology inferences.

In this study, we report the first occurrence of Sigmodon minor (Cricetidae, Rodentia) in Mexico, from the early Blancan of the Pliocene in the San Miguel de Allende Basin, Guanajuato. This record represents an early and rapid dispersal of these rodents from the Great Plains to lower latitudes, likely driven by climatic fluctuations during the late Neogene that favored the expansion of grassland biomes. The fossils described here are among the most complete for this species, including well-preserved mandibles and maxillary elements, found in association with megafauna and supported by radiomet…

A light and scanning electron microscopic study of the epididymis active state of the endemic Mexican rodent Peromyscus winkelmanni (Carleton) (Rodentia: Muridae).

The macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the epididymis of the sexually mature Peromyscus winkelmanni (carleton) was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The epididymis was divided into three regions: caput, corpus and cauda. The epididymal duct was lined with columnar and cubic epithelium with stereocilia and covered by a muscular connective tissue sheath. Capillaries appear to penetrate directly into the epithelium from the underlying connective tissue in the initial segment. The epididymal epithelium presents four cell types: principal, basal, apical and clear cells. Bas

Unilateral absence of the terminal nerve and distribution of gonadotropin-releasing hormone immunoreactive neurons in the brain of the common mole-rat (Cryptomys, Rodentia).

A paired terminal nerve with gonadotropin-releasing hormone-immunoreactive (GnRHir) neurons was found in five of six specimens of the Zambian common mole-rat (Cryptomys sp.). In these animals the distribution of GnRHir neurons in the CNS was approximately even on both sides. One adult female lacked a right terminal nerve, yet exhibited a comparable total number of GnRHir neurons, most of which were located on the left side of the brain, i. e., on that side where the terminal nerve was present. An additional population of GnRHir cells was detected in the area of the parafascicular and dorsomedi

A comparative electron microscopic analysis of mechanoreceptors in the hard palate of the mouse (Mus musculus; Rodentia) and the musk shrew (Suncus murinus; Insectivora).

These mechanoreceptors were studied with particular regard to their type and the distribution. In both species they were concentrated in the crests of transverse palatine rugae. In the mouse, Meissner corpuscles, glomerular corpuscles, and Merkel cell nerve endings were seen in every palatine ruga, though the first antemolar ruga also contained simple and atypical lamellated corpuscles. In contrast, the palatine rugae of the musk shrew contained only simple corpuscles and Merkel cell nerve endings. Meissner corpuscles in the mouse palate were frequently aggregated to form a palisade-like, huge

Characteristics of the larval Echinococcus vogeli Rausch and Bernstein, 1972 in the natural intermediate host, the paca, Cuniculus paca L. (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae).

In Colombia, the natural intermediate host of Echinococcus vogeli Rausch and Bernstein, 1972 is the paca, Cuniculus paca L. (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae). The larval cestode develops in the liver of the host, where it usually is situated superficially, partly exposed beneath Glisson's capsule. The infective larva consists of a subspherical to asymmetrical, fluid-filled vesicle, up to 30 mm in diameter, enclosed by a thick laminated membrane. It typically contains numerous chambers, often interconnected, produced by endogenous proliferation of germinal and laminated tissue, within which brood capsu…

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Amazonia: isolation of Leishmania (Viannia) lainsoni from the rodent Agouti paca (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae), in the state of Pará, Brazil].

The isolation of Leishmania (V.) lainsoni is recorded for the first time from a wild animal, the rodent Agouti paca (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae), from Pará State, north Brazil. Isolates of the parasite were made from apparently normal skin of 3 specimens of this rodent captured on the Island of Tocantins, in the municipality of Tucuruí, an area subsequently flooded in the formation of the lake associated with the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam. No isolations were made from the viscera. Identification of the parasite was in each case based on morphology of the amastigotes and promastigotes, behavior of…

Ectoparasites of rodents in Southern Africa: a new species of Androlaelaps Berlese, 1903 (Acari: Parasitiformes: Laelapidae) from Rhabdomys pumilio (Sparrman) (Rodentia: Muridae).

Androlaelaps rhabdomysi n. sp. is described from the pelage of the endemic rodent Rhabdomys pumilio (Sparrman) in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The formal taxonomic description and illustrations are derived from adults (female and male) and deutonymphs. The specimens are similar in appearance to two congeneric species A. dasymys (Radford, 1939) and A. fahrenholzi (Berlese, 1911), but differ in the following features: genital shield long and almost parallel-sided; metapodal shield elongate; and anal shield longer than wide. Furthermore, the pilus dentilis on the fixed cheliceral digi

Intestinal fibrovascular nodules caused by Schistosoma mansoni infection in Calomys callosus Rengger, 1830 (Rodentia: Cricetidae): a model of concomitant fibrosis and angiogenesis.

Human schistosomiasis develops extensive and dense fibrosis in portal space, together with congested new blood vessels. This study demonstrates that Calomys callosus infected with Schistosoma mansoni also develops fibrovascular lesions, which are found in intestinal subserosa. Animals were percutaneously infected with 70 cercariae and necropsied at 42, 45, 55, 80, 90 and 160 days after infection. Intestinal sections were stained for brightfield, polarization microscopy, confocal laser scanning, transmission and scanning electron microscopies. Immunohistological analysis was also performed and

[Meriones shawi (Duvernoy, 1842) [Rodentia, Gerbillidae] a reservoir of Leishmania major, Yakimoff and Schokhor, 1914 [Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae] in South Morocco (author's transl)].

For the first time a report is made of Meriones shawi (Duvernoy, 1842) infected by Leishmania major Yakimoff and Shokhor, 1914. The parasite was observed in two of 28 Meriones captured in the immediate vicinity of the Tata administrative center (South Morocco). M. shawi, because it is sub-commercial with man and abundant, is very likely one of the reservoirs of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in this area.

Gray areas: an investigation of ectoparasite abundance and distribution and tick-borne pathogens in peridomestic eastern gray squirrels Rodentia: Sciuridae (Sciurus carolinensis).

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis Gmelin) is a widely distributed rodent in North America, including introduced populations in western regions. Despite being widespread in urban and suburban ecosystems, their role as reservoirs for tick-borne pathogens has been understudied compared to other wildlife hosts. This study investigates the prevalence of ectoparasites and tick-borne pathogens in eastern gray squirrels across suburban habitats in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. Over 2 yr, squirrels were trapped across 5 sites and examined for ectoparasites. Ticks were the mo

The role of sensory feedback from carpal sinus hairs in locomotor kinematics of rats (Rattus norvegicus, Rodentia) during walking on narrow substrates.

Carpal sinus hairs on the forearms are assumed to have evolved within the stem lineage of Theria. The presence and similar position of these specialized tactile hairs in scansorial and terrestrial species as well as earlier studies on rats indicate a biological role in sensing substrate irregularities in high structured environments to ensure the dynamic stability of the body during locomotion. While these sensors were considered as one functional unit until so far, the present study deals with the biological role of the single tactile hairs of the trident, assuming a role in sensing substrate
