Progressive external, root resorption was observed apical to the alveolar crest on the buccal surface of a tooth. The area of root resorption was surgically exposed. To gain access to the root resorption cavity osteoectomy was performed. The soft tissue in the resorption cavity was removed and a composite filling (Retroplast) was placed in the cavity using a dentine bonding system (Gluma). The pulp was removed and the root canal was obturated with gutta-percha points and root canal sealer (AH26). Eight months after treatment no further root resorption was observed. Increased pocket depth and s

Although many materials are used for root canal fillings in endodontic treatment, calcium hydroxide has been preferred for many years due to its bactericidal effect and biocompatibility. Calcium hydroxide can be applied in more than one form. In this case study, calcium hydroxide in viscous form, applied into the root canal during endodontic treatment, overflowed from the apical part of the tooth to the inferior alveolar nerve canal. Postoperative paraesthesia was observed in the patient. Dental volumetric tomography was performed to study the extent of sealer in the inferior alveolar nerve ca

AIM: To assess and correlate three distinct states of severely painful endodontically derived inflammation with their depiction on periapical radiographs using periapical index (PAI) scores.
METHODOLOGY: During a period of 15 months, 368 consecutively enrolled patients with suspected endodontic emergency conditions were examined at the University of Zurich, Center of Dental Medicine. Cases with a severely painful (numeric rating scale, NRS-11 > 6) endodontically involved tooth and a clear pulpal and apical diagnosis (n = 162) were selected (one tooth per patient). Teeth were divided into thre

This study examined, histologically, the healing of intentionally damaged root surfaces of replanted teeth with either uninfected or infected root canals treated with short- and long-term calcium hydroxide. Thirty beagle dog incisors were randomly divided into four groups. In group 1, uninfected obturated incisors were extracted, the roots were longitudinally grooved and the teeth were replanted within 2 min. In group 2 the root canals were artificially infected followed by extraction, longitudinal grooving, and replantation as described in group 1. Fourteen days after replantation, the root c

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of the left bacteria on the root canal therapy.
METHODS: 50 single-rooted teeth with chronic apical periodontitis were divided into two groups, one was instrumented with step-back technique and 2.5%NaOCl ultrasonic irrigation for 3 min, then filled with Thermafil. Samples were taken after instrumentation to culture. The other was treated with traditional RCT at three visits.
RESULTS: In 24 months the apical radiolucency were greatly reduced in all cases. There weren't significant relationship among the postoperative pain and the left bacteria, the degree of the

This study compared the quality of the obturation of small, curved root canals laterally condensed with a medium-fine (MF) finger spreader and one of two types of accessory cones. Thirty small, curved canals of permanent molars were cleaned and shaped, then randomly separated into two groups. They were obturated with a standardized master cone and either MF conventional accessory cones of #25 standardized accessory cones. Cross-sectional outs were made at the 2-mm and the 4-mm apical levels. Digitized tracings were made from photomicrographic slides of the cross-sections to determine the perce

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of a digital radiograph registration and subtraction software for a sensitive and reliable assessment of the progress of chronic apical periodontitis. Ninety cases of teeth with chronic apical periodontitis have been studied. In each case, a preoperative radiograph was taken, root canals were prepared, and a Ca(OH)2 paste was placed in the root canals. Radiographic control and replacement of Ca(OH)2 paste took place at 15-day intervals. The root canals were obturated 1.5 months after the first appointment. Recall radiographs were taken

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the consistency and inconsistency between the periapical radiography (PR) and cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) in evaluating the length of root canal obturations (RCOs) in vivo.
STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-six maxillary and mandibular first and second molars yielding 109 obturated root canals with available PR and CBCT images were analyzed. The inclusion criterion was that the RCO extended 0-2 mm short of the radiographic apex on PR images. Teeth having root canal calcification, apical resorption, or poor quality PR/CBCT images were excluded.…

Complete removal of gutta-percha during endodontic retreatment is essential for effective canal disinfection and resealing of the root canal system. Gutta-percha solvents may alter dentin characteristics and influence adhesion of sealers. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of castor oil, peppermint oil, wintergreen oil, and xylene on the bond strength of AH Plus sealer to root dentin. Forty extracted human single-rooted teeth were prepared, obturated, and randomly assigned to four groups (n = 10) based on the solvent used during retreatment. Following removal of the root canal filling ma

Furcation involvement in multirooted teeth represents a significant challenge for endodontic treatment due to anatomical variability, the presence of accessory canals, and limited accessibility for adequate disinfection. This article presents a clinical case of non-surgical single-visit endodontic treatment of chronic apical periodontitis associated with furcation involvement in tooth 4.7. Root canal disinfection was performed using 3.25% sodium hypochlorite with intracanal heating up to 150 °C plugger. After chemo-mechanical preparation, definitive root canal obturation was carried out using …

This case report describes root canal filling performed over a large S1 ProTaper file fragment in a second mandibular molar with irreversible pulpitis. An S1 ProTaper file was fractured during the instrumentation of the mesiobuccal canal. Approximately 10 mm of file fragment remained in the apical and middle thirds of the canal. The obturation was performed over this fragment using thermomechanically compacted gutta-percha and sealer. Radiographic findings and the absence of clinical signs and symptoms at 3-year follow up indicated successful treatment. Cone-beam computed tomography images rev
