Approaches to the control of fasciolosis in ruminants.

Approaches to the control of fasciolosis in ruminants are compared for developed countries, and for developing countries with particular reference to regions growing irrigated rice. In all environments problem definition and investigation are based on one or more of observation, abattoir surveys, faecal egg counts, tracer animals and snail studies. In developed countries each husbandman grazes a large number of animals, controls access to pasture and water, and markets high value products. Strategic and tactical treatments control fasciolosis in these circumstances and will continue to do so w…

Factors influencing magnesium absorption and metabolism in ruminants.

Magnesium is a nutrient required for all animals, but it is especially critical for ruminants. A physiological deficiency of Mg results in hypomagnesemic tetany. Typically, only female ruminants are affected, and the disturbance usually occurs during the early stages of lactation. Magnesium functions at three biochemical levels, as a cofactor at the enzymatic level, at the structural level in assembly of ribosomes, and at the whole cell level as a stabilizing force in membranes. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) can affect Mg metabolism by decreasing urinary Mg excretion and stimulating bone resorptio…

Development of cell-mediated immunity in young ruminants.

Development of cell-mediated immunity in young ruminants appears to be under the influence of the thymus. In sheep, prenatal removal of the thymus has little effect on postnatal growth of lambs. However, lambs are immunodeficient compared with normal controls, and they exhibit depressed delayed hypersensitive skin responses to antigens such as tuberculin purified protein derivative. Lymphopenia accompanying the immunodeficiency appears to be due to depletion of a particular population of T-cells (thymus derived) that have reduced response to mitogens and decreased numbers as the lamb matures. …

Studies on cysticercosis of small ruminants in Nigeria.

1,132 animals (720 goats and 412 sheep) brought to the Ibadan abbatoir within a six month-period were examined during necropsy for the presence of Cysticercus tenuicollis. C. tenuicollis was found in 20.97% and 23.30% of goats and sheep respectively. In both species, female animals were more predisposed to infection and it appears that adult animals were more susceptible. There was a low degree of infection during the dry season. The economic and public health importance of this disease are discussed.

Hypoplasia of the left ventricle in four ruminants.

Two different congenital malformations of the heart were seen in two calves and two ewe lambs. In all these malformations the left ventricle was more or less hypoplastic; it was small with a narrow lumen and a thick wall. In one malformation the aorta began as a cul-de-sac above the left ventricle; in the other, the aorta arose from the right ventricle, to the right of the supraventricular crest.

Seroprevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Peste des Petits Ruminants in Small Ruminants in North Shewa, Ethiopia: Implications for Eradication Efforts.

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) are a highly contagious viral disease that causes substantial morbidity, mortality, and economic losses in Ethiopian small ruminants. Despite ongoing efforts to eradicate PPR by 2027, 554 outbreaks were reported nationwide between 2018 and 2022. This cross-sectional study, conducted from January to May 2024, estimated the seroprevalence of PPR virus (PPRV) and identified associated risk factors among nonvaccinated small ruminants in six districts of North Shewa zone using competitive ELISA (C-ELISA). RESULTS: Of the 324 serum samples tested, 182 we…

Detection of canine distemper virus (CDV) neutralising antibodies in small ruminants during peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV) surveillance in Zambia.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is endemic in Zambia, while peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV) has not been detected. This study screened 962 farmed goats and 237 small ruminants at informal markets for PPRV antibodies using c-ELISA. A subset (n = 29) was re-analysed with virus neutralisation assays (VNA) for antibodies to PPRV and CDV due to cross-reactivity concerns. c-ELISA indicated 6.44% PPRV seroprevalence on farms and 3.80% at markets. While VNA detected no PPRV antibodies, 45% (13/29) tested positive for CDV, possibly suggesting cross-reactivity. Given the study's limitations, furthe…

Altered ruminal microbiome tryptophan metabolism and their derived 3-indoleacetic acid inhibit ruminal inflammation in subacute ruminal acidosis goats.

BACKGROUND: Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a digestive disorder that often severely jeopardizes the health and lactation performance of ruminants fed a high-energy diet. Different dairy ruminants exhibit varying degrees of inflammation accompanied by variations in the rumen microbiota when SARA occurs. Our understanding of the occurrence of SARA and varying degrees of rumen epithelial inflammation is lacking. Hence, we performed rumen metagenomic, metagenome-assembled genome and metabolomic analyses, with transcriptome and single-nucleus RNA sequence analyses, to explore the microbial mec…

The prevalence of rumination syndrome and rumination disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is characterized by the repeated regurgitation of food. Rumination syndrome is a disorder of gut-brain interaction diagnosed by Rome criteria, whereas rumination disorder is a feeding and eating disorder diagnosed by DSM-5 criteria. We aimed to determine the global prevalence of rumination according to these criteria across all age groups. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting the prevalence of rumination syndrome according to Rome III and Rome IV and rumination disorder according to the following validated DSM-5 assessments: P

Rumination as a transdiagnostic process: The role of rumination in relation to antisocial and borderline symptoms.

The present study examined the influence of several forms of repetitive negative thinking on antisocial and borderline symptoms to identify underlying mechanisms that may contribute to the presentation and cooccurrence of these symptoms. Participants (N = 403), completed the Personality Assessment Inventory, the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4, and several measures of rumination/worry. Path analyses were conducted in which different forms of rumination/worry predicted antisocial and borderline symptoms across two personality disorder measures. Across both models tested, anger rumination

Does social anxiety predict rumination and co-rumination among adolescents?

Social anxiety in adolescence is manifested by anxiety about and avoidance of social interactions. The present study examined whether social anxiety predicts higher levels of both rumination and co-rumination over time. Rumination and co-rumination were studied as possible outcomes because the cognitive content of these processes often involves interpersonal concerns. A three-wave longitudinal study of 575 adolescents (aged 13-16 years old) was conducted over 6 months. Adolescent girls reported higher levels of social anxiety, rumination, and co-rumination than boys. Structural equation modell

Relationships between depressive rumination, anger rumination, and borderline personality features.

We examined relationships between depressive rumination, anger rumination, and features of borderline personality disorder in a sample of 93 students with a wide range of borderline symptoms. All completed self-report measures of borderline features; trait-level negative affect; depressive and anger rumination; and current symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Depressive and anger rumination were strongly associated with borderline features after controlling for comorbid symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Both types of rumination showed significant incremental validity over tr

Bioavailability of ruminally protected sulfamethoxazole after oral administration in ruminating calves.

Bioavailabilities of oral rumen-protected and non-protected formulations of sulfamethoxazole (SMS) were compared in ruminating calves, since in vitro degradation of SMX in ruminal fluid was confirmed. The coated with a gastric-acid-soluble polymer and uncoated formulations were administered to 3 calves through a catheter. Neither formulation could produce sufficient blood concentration of the drug, though the bioavailability of SMX for the coated formulation was higher than that for the uncoated formulation. It was suggested that the rumen-protected drug could improve the bioavailability by es

What is high rumination?

OBJECTIVE: The current paper tries to illuminate the need for standard cutoff points. INTRODUCTION: rumination is considered to be a transdiagnostic process leading to a variety of consequences. But, what is prominent ruminative tendency? Are there agreed-upon specifications or cutoff points that distinguish between high and low tendency to ruminate? In an attempt to answer these questions, we reviewed 25 works that compared people characterized as high or low in rumination. We found numerous inconsistencies in the characterization criteria and a great variability in cutoff points. Most studi
