From health protection to labor incentive: health and economic impacts of Medical Financial Assistance in rural China.

Medical Financial Assistance (MFA), a key safety net for low-income groups in China, may exert incentive or welfare dependency effects on non-farm labor supply, an issue critical to assessing the effectiveness of medical security policies. Using two-wave household panel data, this study employs two-way fixed effects models to evaluate MFA's impact on the non-farm labor supply (participation rate and working time) of low-income rural households, distinguishing between the effects of eligibility attainment and increased assistance amounts. The results show that: (1) MFA eligibility significantly

Building Bridges to Farmer Mental Health: Developing and Supporting a Mental Health Advocate Network in Rural Communities.

Farmers experience disproportionately high levels of psychological distress and suicide risk compared with the general population, yet they often face personal and structural barriers to mental health support. In response, the Building Bridges to Farmer Mental Health initiative was developed to strengthen community-based outreach in rural Kentucky by training trusted local stakeholders who regularly interact with farmers, their family members, and farmworkers to recognize signs of distress, engage in supportive conversations, and connect individuals to appropriate resources. Two cohorts of Men

Health Needs and Challenges in Preventing Secondhand Smoke Exposure Among Rural Adolescents: Implications for Innovative Health Education.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) and those living with parents who smoke are at higher risk for tobacco use and adverse health outcomes. School nurses are expected to support smoke-free policies on campuses and play a prominent role in health promotion. However, few nursing studies on SHS exposure prevention have included recommended strategies for advising family smokers (AFS). PURPOSE: This study was developed to examine the prevalence of SHS exposure among adolescents in rural areas and assess the impact of implementing a pilot program that incorporates innovative

Health worker acceptability of an HIV testing mobile health application within a rural Zambian HIV treatment programme.

BACKGROUND: As more people living with HIV are identified and prescribed antiretroviral treatment in Zambia, detecting new HIV infections to complete the last mile of epidemic control is challenging. To address this, innovative targeted testing strategies are essential. Therefore, Right to Care Zambia developed and implemented a novel digital health surveillance application, Lynx, in three Zambian provinces-Northern, Luapula, and Muchinga in 2018. Lynx offers real-time HIV testing data with geo-spatial analysis for targeted testing, and has proven effective in enhancing HIV testing yield. This

From Access to Outcomes: A Practical Approach to Strengthen Rural Health Systems.

Durable improvements in rural population health require stronger enabling conditions, including governance, workforce, payment, and data infrastructure, rather than a narrow focus on access to health care. We synthesized empirical evidence and health systems research published through 2025, emphasizing US studies of rural health outcomes, primary care, prevention, workforce, and payment models. Rural health systems are heterogeneous, and single interventions do not produce equal gains across communities. Evidence supports integrated approaches that combine community-wide prevention, team-based…

[Food and nutritional security actions in health planning in predominantly rural municipalities].

Primary Health Care has great potential to intensify Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) actions. Municipal Health Plans (PMS) define actions to be developed and establish an intersectoral agenda for promoting FNS according to the characteristics and demands of the population. This study aims to describe the epidemiological profile characterized in the PMS of municipalities in a predominantly rural region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and to identify the intentionality of actions to promote FNS in health planning. This is a descriptive documentary study, originating from the analysis of

Mental health care access in rural communities amid the expansion of telehealth.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to metropolitan residents, rural residents face disparities in access to local mental health providers that are even larger than for other health care services. Telehealth appears to be a solution: patients should be able to more easily access providers from metro areas, reducing disparities in access. We consider how provider composition in telehealth or changes in provider behavior enabled by telehealth are associated with access to telehealth. METHODS: We present descriptive evidence from multivariate regressions using National Health Interview Survey and Medical Exp

A Call for Pediatric Clinicians to Address Environmental Health Concerns in Rural Settings.

Children in rural communities encounter unique environmental exposures, many of which can result in negative long-term health consequences. Children are particularly at risk from these exposures due to their close interaction with the environment and developing physiology. The authors describe 3 rural environmental hazards: wood stove smoke, well water contaminants, and agricultural pollutants. Contaminants found in these exposures have adverse respiratory, neurodevelopmental, cardiometabolic, and carcinogenic effects, among others. The authors recommend that rural pediatric clinicians screen

Women's health care: the experiences and behaviors of rural and urban lesbians in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has consistently demonstrated that, in comparison to their cisgender heterosexual counterparts, lesbians face a multitude of women's healthcare-related disparities. However, very little research has been conducted that takes an intersectionality approach to examining the potential influences of rural-urban location on the health-related needs and experiences of lesbians. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively compare rural and urban lesbians' access to women's health care, experiences with women's healthcare providers (WHCPs), and preventive behavior us

Echinococcosis: An Economic Evaluation of a Veterinary Public Health Intervention in Rural Canada.

Echinococcosis is a rare but endemic condition in people in Canada, caused by a zoonotic cestode for which the source of human infection is ingestion of parasite eggs shed by canids. The objectives of this study were to identify risk factors associated with infection and to measure the cost-utility of introducing an echinococcosis prevention program in a rural area. We analyzed human case reports submitted to the Canadian Institutes for Health Information between 2002 and 2011. Over this 10 year period, there were 48 cases associated with E. granulosus/E. canadensis, 16 with E. multilocularis,
