Sarcopenia, defined as age-associated decline of muscle mass and function, is a risk factor for mortality and disability, and comorbid with several chronic diseases such as type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Clinical trials showed that nutritional supplements had positive effects on muscle mass, but not on muscle function and strength, demonstrating our limited understanding of the molecular events involved in the ageing muscle. Protein homeostasis, the equilibrium between protein synthesis and degradation, is proposed as the major mechanism underlying the development of sarcopenia.…

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation (LT) is a game changer in cirrhosis. Poor muscle mass defined as sarcopenia may potentially upset the LT scoreboard.
AIM: To assess the prevalence and impact of sarcopenia on the intraoperative and early postoperative outcomes in Indian patients undergoing LT.
METHODS: Pre LT, single-slice routine computed tomography images at L3 vertebra of 115 LT recipients were analyzed, to obtain cross-sectional area of six skeletal muscles normalized for height in m2 - skeletal muscle index (SMI; cm2/m2). SMI< 52.4 in males and <38.5 in females was called sarcopenia. Th…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The speed of dietary protein digestion influences postprandial amino acid availability which is crucial for improving altered anabolic response of skeletal muscle one feature of sarcopenia during aging.
RECENT FINDINGS: By analogy with carbohydrate and in reference to their absorption rate, dietary proteins can be classified as 'fast' or 'slow' proteins depending on matrix food structure and technological processes, which can influence amino acids availability and their subsequent metabolic actions. 'Fast' digestive proteins have been shown to stimulate muscle protein synth…

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and consequent loss of muscle function with aging. Its prevalence among the general population is 12% to 30% in those aged >60 years. We evaluated (1) the difference in the prevalence of sarcopenia between patients with rotator cuff tear and controls and (2) the sarcopenia severity according to the size of the rotator cuff tear.
METHODS: Group 1 included 48 consecutive patients with chronic symptomatic full-thickness rotator cuff tears (mean age, 60.1 ± 6.5 years; range, 46-76 years), and group 2 included 48 age- and sex-matched patients. The …

The risk for respiratory complications and infections is substantially increased in old age, which may be due, in part, to sarcopenia (aging-related weakness and atrophy) of the diaphragm muscle (DIAm), reducing its force generating capacity and impairing the ability to perform expulsive non-ventilatory motor behaviors critical for airway clearance. The aging-related reduction in DIAm force generating capacity is due to selective atrophy of higher force generating type IIx and/or IIb muscle fibers, whereas lower force generating type I and IIa muscle fiber sizes are preserved. Fiber type speci…

Physical function decreases with aging, which may result in adverse outcomes (eg, disability, loss of independence, institutionalization, death). Physical function impairment is a common trait of frailty and sarcopenia. These two conditions, albeit highly common, have not yet received a unique operational definition, which has impeded their implementation in standard practice. Here, we introduce a conceptual model in which sarcopenia is proposed as the biological substrate and the pathway whereby the consequences of physical frailty develop. This conceptualization may open new venues for the d…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength with a risk of adverse outcomes such as physical disability, poor quality of life, and death. Sarcopenia is a multifactorial process involving the decline of androgens, including dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) and testosterone. The aim of this review is to highlight the effects of DHEAS and testosterone treatment to counteract sarcopenia, especially in older men.
RECENT FINDINGS: DHEAS and, more importantly, testosterone treatment are associated…

Sarcopenia, defined as a syndrome rather than as a pathology, is the loss of muscle mass and function associated with age. Sarcopenia is an enigma for medicine, and despite the numerous publications available in the literature and the number of papers currently being published, there is no agreement about its definition, and even less about its root causes. One salient aspect that proves the lack of consensus is the fact that different working groups are still debating about the right name for this syndrome (which is associated with the loss of muscle mass and strength in the elderly). In hosp…

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often coexists with sarcopenia, contributing to poorer exercise tolerance, quality of life, and prognosis. Although interest in this topic has increased, a comprehensive bibliometric overview is still lacking.
METHODS: English-language articles and reviews on COPD complicated with sarcopenia published between 2005 and 2025 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus. After screening and deduplication, bibliometric and visualisation analyses were conducted using bibliometrix/biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace to …

Muscle loss is a significant health concern, particularly with the increasing trend of population aging, and sarcopenia has emerged as a common pathological process of muscle loss in the elderly. Currently, there has been significant progress in the research on sarcopenia, including in-depth analysis of the mechanisms underlying sarcopenia caused by aging and the development of corresponding diagnostic criteria, forming a relatively complete system. However, as research on sarcopenia progresses, the concept of secondary sarcopenia has also been proposed. Due to the incomplete understanding of …

Identification of possible sarcopenia, which is a simple assessment of sarcopenia, has been proposed for the earlier detection of sarcopenia in primary care settings; however, there are no studies comparing the differences in characteristics of older adults with possible sarcopenia or sarcopenia. This study aimed to compare the characteristics of “possible sarcopenia” in real-world primary care and “sarcopenia” in research settings. A total of 2129 older adults were enrolled from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. Possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia were defined using Asian Working Grou…

Sarcopenia is a multifactorial age-related muscle disorder of which its underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. To date, treatment strategies of sarcopenia have been largely confined to lifestyle interventions, underscoring an urgent need for pharmacological options that directly target the biological drivers of muscle deterioration. Despite increasing interest in drug development for sarcopenia, no specific pharmacological agent has yet received regulatory approval. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent advances in investigational pharmacoth…

Sarcopenia is an age-associated degenerative disorder of skeletal muscle, characterized by the progressive decline in muscle mass and function, which increases the risk of falls, injuries, and accidental death in older adults. Deciphering its pathogenic mechanisms is crucial for advancing early detection, precision prevention, and ultimately improving the quality of life for the elderly population. Increasing evidence suggests that epigenetic regulation plays a central role in driving sarcopenia. DNA methylation, chromatin remodeling, and noncoding RNA regulation collectively accelerate the de…

Sarcopenia is becoming a major public health concern for older adults. The incidence rate in people over 70 years of age is 30-50%. Patients with sarcopenia not only have difficulty moving and are prone to falls and fractures, but in severe cases, they may also experience heart and lung failure and even death. Early diagnosis and prevention in high-risk populations can effectively prevent the deterioration of muscle atrophy. In this review, we describe the physiological mechanism of muscle contraction and reveal common pathological changes in sarcopenic patients, including oxidative stress, in…

Sarcopenia is an age-related skeletal muscle disorder characterized by progressive loss of muscle strength, mass, and structural integrity. MRI plays a central role in evaluating muscle volume, fatty infiltration, inflammation, fibrosis, and architectural changes using advanced techniques including Dixon imaging, PDFF quantification, T2 mapping, diffusion imaging, IVIM, and ultrashort-echo-time sequences. Radiomic analysis further improves characterization of muscle degeneration and osteosarcopenia by extracting quantitative imaging biomarkers. These MRI-derived metrics support the diagnosis, …

Sarcopenia, commonly found in the elderly and characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle mass, decreased muscle strength, and reduced physical performance, draws attention because it often leads to frailty, an increased risk of falls and fractures, and higher morbidity and mortality. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) usually suffer from malnutrition, physical inactivity, inflammation, metabolic acidosis, insulin resistance, and other hormonal changes, which are all aggravating factors of sarcopenia. Therefore, the prevention, early detection, and adequate management for sarcopenia i…

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function, is driven by a convergence of molecular, cellular, hormonal, nutritional, and neurological alterations. Skeletal muscle comprises multinucleated fibers supported by satellite cells-muscle stem cells essential for repair and regeneration. With age, both the structure and function of these components deteriorate: myonuclei become disorganized, gene expression skews toward catabolic, inflammatory, and fibrotic pathways, and satellite cell numbers and activity decline. Concurrently, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaire…
