Pathogenic Fungi Isolated from Desiccated Mushrooms, Seaweed, Anchovies and Rice Sticks Imported from the Orient 1.

Desiccated mushrooms, seaweed, rice sticks and anchovies imported from the Orient were obtained from commercial sources or from products detained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and examined for pathogenic fungi. The etiological agents isolated were mycelial and yeast fungi known to produce deep sporotrichosis, phaeohyphomycosis, mycetoma, chromoblastomycosis, candidosis and cryptococcosis. Other fungi isolated were opportunistic fungi and/or producers of mycotoxins. Total mold counts in the foods examined varied from 2 × 102 to 5 × 106. The predominant pathogens in the mushrooms were

Conserving seaweeds: knowledge, attitudes, and practices from industry and conservation stakeholders in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Seaweed cultivation is estimated to sustain over 6 million livelihoods worldwide, particularly in low-income tropical regions, such as Indonesia. The wild stocks that underpin this industry, however, are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures (e.g. climate change and overexploitation) that undermine its productivity and resilience. Although seaweed cultivation has been proposed as a nature-based solution to conserve biodiversity and support livelihoods, its long-term viability depends on the sustainable use and management of seaweed habitats by stakeholders. This study conducted a

Influence of seaweed dietary fibre as a potential alternative to phosphates on the quality profiles and flavour attributes of frankfurters.

This study primarily aimed to investigate the influence of seaweed dietary fibre (SDF), as a potential alternative to phosphates, on the quality profiles and flavour attributes of frankfurters. The results revealed that SDF addition can significantly improve the cooking yield and texture characteristics of phosphate-free frankfurters (P < 0.05), and 1.00% SDF proved to be the optimal concentration for replacing phosphates in frankfurters. Moreover, electronic nose and electronic tongue analyses demonstrated that SDF incorporation potentially influences the aroma and taste of phosphate-free fra

Optimization of Desalting Conditions for the Green Seaweed Codium fragile for Use as a Functional Food with Hypnotic Effects.

Codium fragile (CF) contains various bioactive compounds, but its high salt content (39.8%) makes its use as a functional food challenging. Here, we aimed to optimize the desalination process and verify changes in functionality based on variations in salt and total phenolic contents. To optimize the CF immersion conditions for the lowest salt content and monitor the total phenolic content, a response surface methodology was used. The optimal immersion conditions were as follows: X1 (immersion temperature) = 42.8 °C; X2 (immersion time) = 1.0 h. An inverse correlation was noted between salt con

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Bioactive Compounds from Seaweeds, Bryozoans, Jellyfish, Shellfish and Peanut Worms.

Inflammation is a defense mechanism of the body in response to harmful stimuli such as pathogens, damaged cells, toxic compounds or radiation. However, chronic inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases. Multiple anti-inflammatory drugs are currently available for the treatment of inflammation, but all exhibit less efficacy. This drives the search for new anti-inflammatory compounds focusing on natural resources. Marine organisms produce a broad spectrum of bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory activities. Several are considered as lead compounds for
