Evaluating non-randomised intervention studies.

OBJECTIVES: To consider methods and related evidence for evaluating bias in non-randomised intervention studies. DATA SOURCES: Systematic r … appreciated when policies were made. The inability of case-mix adjustment methods to compensate for selection bias and our inability to identify non-randomised studies that are free of selection bias indicate that non-randomised studies should only be undertaken when RCTs are infeasible or unethical. Recommendations for further research include: applying the res …

Field-based random sampling without a sampling frame: control selection for a case-control study in rural Africa.

Selection bias, particularly of controls, is common in case-control studies and may materially affect the results. Methods of control selection should be tailored both for the risk factors and disease under investigation and for the population being studied. We present here a control selection method devised for a case-control study of tuberculosis in rural Africa (Karonga, northern Malawi) that selects an age/sex frequency-matched random sample of the population, with a geographical distribution in proportion to the population density. We also present an audit of the selection process, and di…

Effector-independent Representations Guide Sequential Target Selection Biases in Action.

Previous work shows that automatic attention biases toward recently selected target features transfer across action and perception and even … action. These results represent a first step to clarify the neural substrates of experience-driven selection biases in contexts that require the coordination of multiple actions.

Bias in retrospective studies of spontaneous abortion based on the outcome of the most recent pregnancy.

In a retrospective studies of spontaneous abortion, bias can arise if the investigator restricts attention to the outcome of the most recent pregnancy. Bias happens because couples tend to replace spontaneous abortions with other pregnancies until they achieve a live birth, after which they may avoid conception for a long time. Consequently, the proportion of most recent conceptions ending in loss might be very low compared to what would be seen in a prospective study. Also, time since conception is negatively correlated with apparent risk, because most pregnancies which occurred relatively lo

Improving myalgic encephalomyelitis population sampling: Applying an online respondent-driven method to address biases in G93.3 register data.

With widespread late- and under-diagnosing, health register code G93.3 data cannot offer an unbiased sampling frame for myalgic encephalomyelitis, complicating prevalence and demographic distribution assessments. It also remains unclear if all G93.3 cases would meet the Canada Consensus Criteria (CCC). This article describes a novel methodological approach to addressing selection bias when estimating a CCC population's characteristics, applying an online respondent-driven sampling approach and validated DePaul University algorithms. In a sample of 660 respondents, we assess possible bias in th…

A test for reporting bias in trial networks: simulation and case studies.

BACKGROUND: Networks of trials assessing several treatment options available for the same condition are increasingly considered. Randomized trial evidence may be missing because of reporting bias. We propose a test for reporting bias in trial networks. METHODS: We test whether there is an excess of trials with statistically significant results across a network of trials. The observed number of trials with nominally statistically significant p-values across the network is compared with the expected number. The performance of the test (type I error rate and power) was assessed using simulation

Estimating the age at onset distribution of the asymptomatic stage of a genetic disease based on pedigree data.

Information on the age at onset distribution of the asymptomatic stage of a disease can be of paramount importance in early detection and ti … ed on ascertained pedigree data that take into account the way the data are ascertained to overcome selection bias. Simulation studies show that the estimates seem to be asymptotically unbiased. Our work is motivated by the analysis of data on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, a genetic muscle disorder. In our application, carriers of the genetic causal va …

Systematic review of prognostic factors predicting outcome in non-surgically treated patients with sciatica.

Identification of prognostic factors for surgery in patients with sciatica is important to be able to predict surgery in an early stage. Identification of prognostic factors predicting persistent pain, disability and recovery are important for better understanding of the clinical course, to inform patient and physician and support decision making. Consequently, we aimed to systematically review prognostic factors predicting outcome in non-surgically treated patients with sciatica. A search of Medline, Embase, Web of Science and Cinahl, up to March 2012 was performed for prospective cohort stud

Strong positive selection biases identity-by-descent-based inferences of recent demography and population structure in Plasmodium falciparum.

Malaria genomic surveillance often estimates parasite genetic relatedness using metrics such as Identity-By-Decent (IBD), yet strong positive selection stemming from antimalarial drug resistance or other interventions may bias IBD-based estimates. In this study, we use simulations, a true IBD inference algorithm, and empirical data sets from different malaria transmission settings to investigate the extent of this bias and explore potential correction strategies. We analyze whole genome sequence data generated from 640 new and 3089 publicly available Plasmodium falciparum clinical isolates. We

Right and left liver lobe biopsies by minilaparoscopy reveal clinically significant sampling error in staging and grading of autoimmune hepatitis.

BACKGROUNDS/AIMS: Liver diseases may affect the liver heterogeneously, especially in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the added benefit of double biopsy of both liver lobes during minilaparoscopy in guiding treatment decisions in patients with AIH. METHODS: We identified all patients with AIH or variant syndromes (AIH/PBC and AIH/PSC) at our center, who underwent a double biopsy of both liver lobes via minilaparoscopy between 01/2016 and 12/2020. RESULTS: A total of 114 patients received a biopsy of both liver lobes (AIH: N = 83, AIH/PBC: N = 26, AIH/PSC

Pregnancy identification method as a source of bias in studies of prenatal exposures using real-world data.

Researchers typically identify pregnancies in healthcare data based on observed outcomes. This approach misses pregnancies that received prenatal care but whose outcomes were not recorded, potentially inducing selection bias in prenatal effect estimates. Alternatively, prenatal encounters can be used to identify pregnancies with unobserved outcomes, but this requires addressing loss to follow-up (LTFU). We simulated 10 000 000 pregnancies and estimated the total effect of treatment on preeclampsia. Across 36 scenarios, we varied the treatment effect on miscarriage and/or preeclampsia; percent …

Patterns of research. Oral contraceptives and cervical cancer.

Original papers on the oral contraceptive use-cervical cancer relationship are analysed. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the biases of the original articles collected in relation to various characteristics of any investigation. Papers were located by using MEDLINE, reviewing the references of each article identified by MEDLINE, and then reviewing the contents of those journals in which an original could be published. Fifty-five publications (from 49 original studies) were graded as to quality and classified as biased or unbiased. Nineteen studies were considered unbiased. The most c

On Screen or On Site? Hybrid Interviews for Flexibility Without Added Bias.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Post-COVID-19, some residency program interviews remained virtual, others returned to in-person, and some allow applicants to choose between a virtual or in-person interview. Concerns exist that this hybrid approach may introduce bias. This study aimed to determine whether this hybrid format influences program rank list position or applicant chance of matching and to explore how programs structure the process. METHODS: We analyzed de-identified rank list data and interview formats for 1,170 interviews for 91 positions across six programs in a regional network of pro

Climatic and meteorological exposure and mental and behavioral health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

As climate change exerts wide ranging health impacts, there is a surge of interest in the associations between climatic factors and mental a … s to have low or moderately low risks, while a few studies were rated probably high in confounding, selection bias, outcome measurement, and reporting bias. GRADE evaluation revealed moderate certainty of evidence on thermal comfort index and MBD, but low certainty related to air temperature or sunshine duration.
