Digital Support for Self-Management in Children with Diabetes: Understanding Their Needs and Developing a Design Concept.

In this paper we present a study on the needs and requirements in a digital tool to support self-management in children and adolescents (0-18 years) with type 1 diabetes. The study was formally initiated by the Steno Diabetes Center North Jutland (SDCN), which wanted to develop a virtual universe that could support children and young people in coping with their disease. Through this study we interviewed the project manager from SDCN and the head of the family group in North Jutland. Furthermore, we observed a workshop involving health care professionals and learning specialists who were workin

Association of ovarian hormones with mapping concept of self and others in the brain's default mode network.

The brain's default mode network (DMN) has become closely associated with self-referential mental activity, particularly in the resting-state. Prior reports point that the sex hormones are potent modulators of brain plasticity and functional connectivity. However, it is uncertain whether changes in ovarian hormones, as occur during the monthly menstrual cycle, substantially affects the functional connectivity of DMN. Here, we employed a Self-Awareness Scale (SAS) and the resting-state functional MRI in the late follicular phase and the mid-luteal phase to investigate the effect of the estradio

The uncertain self: Intolerance of uncertainty moderates the association of both positive and disorganized schizotypal traits with self-concept clarity in a non-clinical sample.

Our objective was to investigate the relationship between self-concept clarity, intolerance of uncertainty, and schizotypal traits, with a focus on whether intolerance of uncertainty moderates the association between self-concept clarity and positive schizotypy in a non-clinical context. A sample of 315 adults (on average 43 (SD = 12) years, 247 women) completed the Self-Concept Clarity Scale, the Intolerance of Uncertainty scale, and the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire - Brief Revised. Lower self-concept clarity was significantly associated with higher levels of positive, negative, and

SSVEP-based brain-computer interface enabling graded dyspnoea self-report: proof-of-concept study in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Mechanically ventilated patients may experience respiratory suffering, which is difficult to assess when verbal communication is impaired. We evaluated the performance of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) designed to enable self-reporting of dyspnoea in this context. METHODS: Forty-nine healthy volunteers were studied under five respiratory conditions: normal breathing (NB), inspiratory resistive loading (IRL), inspiratory threshold loading (ITL), CO₂ inhalation (CO₂), and a return to NB as wash-out (NBWO). Respiratory discomfort w

AI-Assisted Student-Centered Instruction and Adolescents' Academic Self-Concept and Communication Competence: A Mixed-Methods Study.

This classroom-based mixed-methods quasi-experimental study examined whether AI-assisted student-centered instruction was associated with changes in adolescents' academic self-concept and self-reported communication competence. Six intact classes were assigned to either the AI-assisted instruction or the usual student-centered instruction condition. The intervention embedded AI-supported prompts into a structured learning cycle comprising individual inquiry, peer discussion, teacher clarification, and self-evaluation. Of the 186 recruited students, 174 were retained for quantitative analysis.

Self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS): In vivo-proof of concept for oral delivery of insulin glargine.

In spite of recent progress made in the field of peptide and protein delivery, oral administration of insulin and similar drugs remains a challenge. In this study, lipophilicity of insulin glargine (IG) was successfully increased via hydrophobic ion pairing (HIP) with sodium octadecyl sulfate to enable incorporation into self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). Two SEDDS formulations (F1: 20% Labrasol®ALF, 30% polysorbate 80, 10% Croduret 50, 20% oleyl alcohol, 20% Maisine® CC; F2: 30% Labrasol®ALF, 20% polysorbate 80, 30% Kolliphor® HS 15, 20% Plurol® oleique CC 497) were developed and

Advancing the Pathways Model: Financially Focused Self-concept and Erroneous Beliefs as Core Psychopathologies in Disordered Gambling.

In the Pathways Model, there are three distinct etiological subtypes of disordered gambling (Behaviourally Conditioned, Emotionally Vulnerable, and Anti-Social Impulsive Risk-Taker). The Pathways Model also posits that erroneous gambling beliefs are a maintenance factor of disordered gambling across the subtypes. Yet, etiological factors and erroneous beliefs have largely been examined separately when determining disordered gambling subtype. Moreover, there may be heretofore unexamined maintenance factors that span the disordered gambling subtypes. In the current research, we addressed this ga

Using concept mapping to prioritize barriers to diabetes care and self-management for those who experience homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a chronic medical condition which demands that patients engage in self-management to achieve optimal glycemic control and avoid severe complications. Individuals who have diabetes and are experiencing homelessness are more likely to have chronic hyperglycemia and adverse outcomes. Our objective was to collaborate with individuals experiencing homelessness and care providers to understand the barriers they face in managing diabetes, as a first step in identifying solutions for enhancing diabetes management in this population. METHODS: We recruited individuals with lived

Intolerance of uncertainty, causal uncertainty, causal importance, self-concept clarity and their relations to generalized anxiety disorder.

Although numerous studies have provided support for the notion that intolerance of uncertainty plays a key role in pathological worry (the hallmark feature of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)), other uncertainty-related constructs may also have relevance for the understanding of individuals who engage in pathological worry. Three constructs from the social cognition literature, causal uncertainty, causal importance, and self-concept clarity, were examined in the present study to assess the degree to which these explain unique variance in GAD, over and above intolerance of uncertainty. Psychosocial experiences associated with confirmed and self-identified dyslexia: a participant-driven concept map of adult perspectives.

Concept mapping (a mixed qualitative-quantitative methodology) was used to describe and understand the psychosocial experiences of adults with confirmed and self-identified dyslexia. Using innovative processes of art and photography, Phase 1 of the study included 15 adults who participated in focus groups and in-depth interviews and were asked to elucidate their experiences with dyslexia. On index cards, 75 statements and experiences with dyslexia were recorded. The second phase of the study included 39 participants who sorted these statements into self-defined categories and rated each statem

Who am I with my Lewy bodies? The insula as a core region of the self-concept networks.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterized by insular atrophy, which occurs at the early stage of the disease. Damage to the insula has been associated with disorders reflecting impairments of the most fundamental components of the self, such as anosognosia, which is a frequently reported symptom in patients with Lewy bodies (LB). The purpose of this study was to investigate modifications of the self-concept (SC), another component of the self, and to identify neuroanatomical correlates, in prodromal to mild DLB. METHODS: Twenty patients with prodromal to mild DLB were selec

A validation of the Swedish self-concept and Identity Measure (SCIM) and its association with mental health problems.

Pathological disturbance to one's identity is closely linked with mental illness and in particular personality disorders. Current measures of identity pathology within clinical research are nevertheless inconsistently used and present with substantial limitations such as disproportionate focus on adolescence. The Self-Concept and Identity Measure (SCIM) identifies pathological and non-pathological identity disturbance by implementing a measurement for clinical components of identity, as well as introducing the Lack of Identity concept. This study thus explores the psychometric properties (fact

Investigating the events that predispose vulnerable and feared self-concepts in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The feared self-concept, the self that a person fears they may be or could become, has been increasingly shown to drive the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is proposed that the feared self develops from a vulnerable self-concept, which itself is a result of normative self-concept development being disrupted by negative early life experiences. However, it is currently unclear which experiences lead to the development of vulnerable self-concept in people with OCD. This study aimed to describe the events and life experiences that people with OCD
