CONTEXT: Adequate self-management could minimize the impact of falls in older adults. The efficacy of fall prevention self-management interventions has been widely studied, yet little is known about why some older adults engage in fall prevention self-management actions and behaviors, whereas others do not. Through a systematic review of fall prevention self-management studies, this study identified characteristics and the personal, social, and environmental factors of older adults who engage in self-management actions and behaviors.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Medical and nursing literature relate…

Individuals who experience auditory hallucinations (AH) frequently report hearing unpleasant voices saying disturbing things to them, making derogatory remarks about them, or commanding them to do something, including harming themselves or someone else. The Self-Management of Unpleasant Auditory Hallucinations Practice Model was developed to help psychiatric-mental health nurses in both inpatient and outpatient settings implement evidence-based nursing care for voice hearers who are distressed by unpleasant voices. The model's utility extends to nursing education, administration, and research.…

Two studies explored the connection between self-consciousness and death cognitions. In Study 1 (n = 56), a positive association was found between accessibility of death-related thoughts and the ruminative dimension of self-consciousness. In Study 2 (n = 212), a mortality salience induction led to higher validation of cultural worldviews (a more severe perception of social transgressions) than a control group, but only among individuals with lower self-consciousness, whereas participants characterized by higher self-consciousness did not make increased use of this cultural anxiety buffer. OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain in the orofacial region affects 10%-15% of the general population. It is most often related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD): pain in the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joints. Managing chronic pain conditions requires a biopsychosocial, evidence-based and patient-centred approach. Accordingly, self-management has been advocated for TMD. This umbrella review aimed to evaluate existing evidence in systematic reviews (SRs) on self-management therapy for TMD.
METHODS: The review was carried out in accordance with the PRISMA and PRIOR guidelines, with a…

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is rapidly increasing throughout the world. T2DM is primarily a self-managed disease yet clinical studies indicate that a large proportion of adults with T2DM struggle to self-manage their diabetes. This puts them at high risk of developing diabetes-related complications. This study presents Diabetes Cam, a new methodology to objectively study T2DM self-management and identify its barriers and facilitators.
METHODS: Thirty adults with diabetes of i-taukei descent from the 4 medical divisions throughout Fiji wore a camera for 4 da…

Managing one's own symptoms, medications, treatments, lifestyle, and psychological and social aspects of chronic disease is known as self-management. The Institute of Medicine has identified three categories of epilepsy self-management, including medication management, behavior management, and emotional support. Overall, there has been limited research of interventions measuring epilepsy self-management behaviors. The present study aimed to develop an abbreviated version of the full, previously published, Adult Epilepsy Self-Management Measurement Instrument (AESMMI) using confirmatory factor …
