BACKGROUND: Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) has been the standard topical antimicrobial for burn wounds for decades. Recently, nanometer-sized silver particles are available which have high surface to volume ratio and remain effective even at a very low concentration and minimizes the chance for tissue toxicity due to silver. A cross sectional study was conducted on workers engaged in manufacturing precious metal powder. Of the 27 workers, 96% had raised urine silver concentrations (range 0.5-52.0 micrograms/l, mean 11.3 micrograms/l) and 92% had raised blood silver concentrations (range 0.05-6.2 micrograms/100 ml, mean 1.0 microgram/100 ml). Precocious puberty has been reported as an important feature of the Silver-Russell syndrome. The present case refers to a boy entered puberty at the chronological age of 11 years and the bone age of 6 years 6/12. Criteria for precocious puberty in this syndrome are discussed by comparison with previously published cases, and it is concluded that abnormalities in clinical pubertal development are quite unusual in this syndrome.

Adding 900 p.p.m. silver (as silver nitrate) to a practical diet for chicks significantly depressed growth, increased wet and dry heart weight to body weight ratios and markedly increased mortality during a four-week experimental period. Blood packed cell volume was not affected.
