Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and are now regarded as underexplored but promising marine resources for modern drug discovery. This review reassesses medicinal seahorses as a potential marine resource for identifying multi-target candidates relevant to Alzheimer's disease (AD) by integrating taxonomy and distribution, conservation, and aquaculture status, ethnomedicinal use, chemical composition, and pharmacology, as well as bibliometric and network-pharmacology analyses. Using published surveys and global databases, we collated record

Plerocercoids of the order Phyllobothriidea were discovered in the gastrointestinal tract of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and White Sea cod, Gadus morhua marisalbi, in the White Sea. Based on the 28S rDNA sequence, plerocercoids from Gasterosteus aculeatus belong to Rockacestus cf. piriei. A phylogenetic tree was reconstructed to infer their evolutionary relationships. Several aspects of larval biology were described: the prevalence and intensity of infection were quantified in host fishes; movement patterns of the scolex and body were documented in vitro. The maximum

Previous marine biology studies found that the concentration of heavy metals in some parasites of fish such as acanthocephalans can be a proper bioindicator. Therefore, we attempted to measure five heavy metal concentrations in the tissues of the fish Gasterosteus aculeatus (G. aculeatus) and its acanthocephalan parasites, Corynosoma caspicum (C. caspicum) from the Southern Caspian Sea, northern Iran. G. aculeatus (three-spined stickleback) was collected from the south of the Caspian Sea, Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. After tissue preparation, the heavy metal concentrations in fishes and

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the age-related diseases and is highly present on the knees. Obesity and mechanical injuries as a risk factor of OA are attributed to cartilage disintegration, joint loading, and inflammation. This study is aimed at investigating the effects of seahorse protein hydrolysate (SH) on posttraumatic osteoarthritis in an obesity rat. The OA model was developed by anterior cruciate ligament transection with medial meniscectomy in a high-fat diet- (HFD-) induced obesity rat model. The male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a HFD for 6 weeks before OA surgery. The OA rats were

Synbranchiella gen. n. is proposed to accommodate Synbranchiella mabelae sp. n. (Proteocephalidae: Monticelliinae) from the intestine of the marbled swamp eel Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, in the River Colastiné, a tributary of the middle River Paraná in Argentina. The new genus is placed in the Monticelliinae because of the cortical position of the genital organs. It differs from all known monticelliine genera by the following combination of characters: (i) scolex robust, with a conical apex, without metascolex; (ii) biloculate suckers with a conspicuous septum separating unequally-sized locu

Quantitative traits important to organismal function and fitness, such as brain size, are presumably controlled by many small-effect loci. Deciphering the genetic architecture of such traits with traditional quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping methods is challenging. Here, we investigated the genetic architecture of brain size (and the size of five different brain parts) in nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) with the aid of novel multilocus QTL-mapping approaches based on a de-biased LASSO method. Apart from having more statistical power to detect QTL and reduced rate of false p

This study is a contribution to the molecular taxonomy and epidemiology of heterophyid (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) metacercariae found in the muscle of Mugilidae (Osteichthyes) from Sardinia (western Mediterranean Sea). Sixty specimens of mugilids (13 Chelon labrosus, 18 Liza aurata, 6 Liza ramada, 8 Liza saliens, 15 Mugil cephalus) were examined and 17,899 metacercariae isolated in 95 % of the hosts. Four types of metacercariae were identified: Heterophyes sp. (n = 14,113), Heterophyes sp. -small (1225), Stictodora sp. (1606), and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) sp. (955). The experimental infection of

The nature of gene flow in parasites with complex life cycles is poorly understood, particularly when intermediate and definitive hosts have contrasting movement potential. We examined whether the fine-scale population genetic structure of the diphyllobothriidean cestode Schistocephalus solidus reflects the habits of intermediate threespine stickleback hosts or those of its definitive hosts, semi-aquatic piscivorous birds, to better understand complex host-parasite interactions. Seventeen lakes in the Cook Inlet region of south-central Alaska were sampled, including ten in the Matanuska-Susitn

Schistocephalus solidus plerocercoids commonly infect three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus populations in brackish and freshwaters, but infections are typically absent from marine populations. Here we provide an experimental test of the salinity tolerance of S. solidus eggs, to determine the role of salinity in limiting the distribution of infection in coastal zones. We find that S. solidus eggs, derived from the in vitro culture of 3 different plerocercoids, developed normally in salinities of up to 12.5‰, but above this egg viability dropped rapidly, and no egg hatching was observ

We surveyed nine populations of the three-spined stickleback infected by the diphyllobothriidean cestode Schistocephalus solidus from south-central Alaska for two apparent forms of tolerance to infection in females capable of producing egg clutches notwithstanding large parasite burdens. Seven populations exhibited fecundity reduction, whereas two populations showed fecundity compensation. Our data suggest that fecundity reduction, a side effect resulting from nutrient theft, occurs in two phases of host response influenced by the parasite : host body mass (BM) ratio. The first is significantl

In Southeast Asia, swamp eels (Synbranchidae: Monopterus spp.) are a common source of human gnathostomiasis, a foodborne zoonosis caused by advanced third-stage larvae (AL3) of Gnathostoma spp. nematodes. Live Asian swamp eels are imported to US ethnic food markets, and wild populations exist in several states. To determine whether these eels are infected, we examined 47 eels from markets and 67 wild-caught specimens. Nematodes were identified by morphologic features and ribosomal intergenic transcribed spacer-2 gene sequencing. Thirteen (27.7%) M. cuchia eels from markets were infected with 3

Endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) effects during early life have the potential to modulate population structure, either directly through increased mortality or by causing inappropriate aggregation events, thus affecting the number of young that will reach adulthood. An alteration in the dispersal and recruitment patterns can also impair the connectivity among geographically distant populations. However, the detection of EDC-induced effects occurring after egg hatch, when newborns increase their chances of contacting with environmentally dispersed contaminants, is not a simple process as effe

Invasive predators can influence prey through direct predation but also via nonconsumptive effects that alter behavior and physiology. Parental care may be particularly sensitive to these effects, as parents must balance offspring investment with survival under predation risk. Here, we examine how predator exposure and predator community composition influence paternal behavior and brain gene expression in wild populations of threespined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in southcentral Alaska. We conducted field behavioral assays in lakes with either native predators only or both native pre

Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide that regulates GnRHergic neurons in mammals; however, its function in teleost fish remains less understood. This study examined the role of kisspeptin2 (Kiss2) in the regulation of testicular function in adult pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis), with a particular focus on differentiating between central and direct gonadal effects. Spermiating males were intraperitoneally injected with homologous Kiss2 (pjKiss2) at 0, 50, or 250 ng/g body weight. Administration of pjKiss2 at 50 ng/g induced a significant decrease in the testicular lobular area occupied by sperm, ind

Rapidly increasing anthropogenic CO2 can impose physiological challenges for fish species that are thought to be tolerant. We tested the hypothesis that elevated pCO2 will affect the routine activity and escape response by affecting energy metabolism and/or the muscle physiology of coastal fish. We exposed threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to pCO2 of ~ 700 µatm (pH 7.9 representing current levels), ~ 1400 µatm (pH 7.6 representing upwelling events) and ~ 3500 µatm (pH 7.3 representing a future predicted scenario for coastal areas) for 2 weeks. Baseline activity was significantly

5S rRNA is highly transcribed in fish oocytes and this transcription levels can be used to identify the presence of oocytes in the intersex testes of fish exposed to xenoestrogens. Similar to 5S rRNA, tRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase III (Pol-III) in eukaryotes, so this study focuses in the analysis of the levels of expression of tRNAs in the gonads (ovaries and testes) of eight teleost species as a possible new oocyte molecular marker. Total RNA extracted from gonads of six commercial teleost species in the Biscay Bay, from the pollution sentinel species thicklip grey mullet (Chelon la

We performed a long-term natural experiment investigating the impact of the diphyllobotriidean cestode Schistocephalus solidus on the body condition and clutch size (CS) of threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, its second intermediate host, and the growth of larval parasites in host fish. We tested the hypothesis that single S. solidus infections were more virulent than multiple infections. We also asked whether the metrics of mean and total parasite mass (proxies for individual and total volume, respectively) were consistent with predictions of the resource constraints or the life hi

Parasite virulence is a key trait in host-parasite interactions and plays a crucial role in infection dynamics. Our study system offers the rare opportunity to study the virulence of an individual macroparasite (Schistocephalus solidus) in its vertebrate fish host (Gasterosteus aculeatus). The size of the tapeworm in the fish can be regarded as a good proxy for individual parasite virulence, as parasite size correlates negatively with fitness traits of the stickleback host (i.e. the bigger the parasite, the lower the host's reproductive success) as well as directly with the number of parasite

Parasitism represents one of the most widespread lifestyles in the animal kingdom, with the potential to drive coevolutionary dynamics with their host population. Where hosts and parasites evolve together, we may find local adaptation. As one of the main host defences against infection, there is the potential for the immune response to be adapted to local parasites. In this study, we used the three-spined stickleback and its Gyrodactylus parasites to examine the extent of local adaptation of parasite infection dynamics and the immune response to infection. We took two geographically isolated h

Several coastal lagoons and estuaries in Mexico receive untreated domestic and industrial discharges which contain complex mixtures of contaminants. In order to assess the effects of chemical contamination, we used the White mullet (Mugil curema) as biological indicator. We worked in two estuaries located in Northwest Mexico: Urias (highly polluted) and Teacapan (less polluted, therefore used as reference site). We measured several endpoints at different levels of biological organization: vitellogenin transcription in males as biomarker of estrogenic contamination, as well as reproductive, mor
